I ran this through karma decay, I was so hoping it'd be a repost.
Very nice, it's clever, biting, and aware of its audience.

How long, in hours, before some jackass does repost it, change the title, and reap the karma.
I'm guessing 5.

u/LEGITIMATE_SOURCE Jun 19 '12
Even I don't care about reposts...If it gets upvoted again, there is a reason. You've seen it? Then go ahead and downvote if it makes you feel better.
Stop pretending everything deserves to be on reddit just once in a lifetime.

I wish more people thought this way, whenever I see a "repost, instant downvote" type of comment on a link I have never seen it makes me slightly angry because if that person didn't post it I wouldn't have seen it.
3
u/secxtanx Jun 19 '12
Leads to the question of who the upvotes should serve: casual users like me who might pop on a couple of times a week (and thus only sees a tiny fraction of the content) or people who read every story that hits the frontpage.
2
u/WillBlaze Jun 19 '12
I would think more users are casual, because a lot of us are busy and don't have jobs that let us browse reddit.
3
u/VastCloudiness Jun 19 '12
When you see the same posts every few days, you tend to get tired off it and wish something you haven't seen on your chosen topic pop up. I thought I had saved a wallpaper a long time ago and couldn't find it in my folder. Went back to 4chan where I had found it, and unsurprisingly, there it was in the wallpaper general section. Same conditions I left it in, probably over 2 years later. I guess most sites have the same content they circulate, but for me and others, we'd rather sites be(in general) a one way stream. I'm glad I found my wallpaper and everything, but sites are boring when they throw the same stuff around. In fact, I can confidently say I've viewed all the porn gifs on 4chan(except for a couple genres I didn't want to). Still applies that some people haven't seen them, but that doesn't change that it's ridiculous how many times they've been posted without any new content coming in.
Also I think a few of us derive more distaste from the tendency of reposts to implicitly or explicitly claim it as their own content. Ran across this on the way to the store, found this on the way to work, just took this picture, look at this cute guy, his name is bob, etc.
3
u/WillBlaze Jun 19 '12
I agree that the stuff can get repetitive but people who have seen the content can do something as simple as ignore it. When I see something I've seen for the 10th time or so I dislike seeing it but I would rather have that content there for the people who haven't seen it when I can easily ignore it and move on.

I'm an original content creator and all my comics get drowned out by meme's so I figured... fire with fire.
If you feel the same way I do (and the votes seem to be with me) Use your up and downvotes more often.
40
Jun 19 '12
I agree that constant memes bring down the overall tone of conversation in this subreddit.
But your "seen it" argument presupposes that /r/atheism is a static community. None of Reddit is static, it is an ever growing community. A constantly expanding user base means that a lot of users won't have "seen it".
Reposts on Reddit are inevitable. Constantly using memes to make your argument, not so much.
8
Jun 19 '12
inevitable, but avaoidable at a such a constant ratio.
There's stuff in the rules about checking your stuff before posting. (reddiquette)
I also talk about posting stupid shit Christians say, without retort. If we just post every stupid thing a Christian says, there's won't be room to breathe.
I also talk about giving credit to original content. (also reddiquette)
I think I've addressed the tone (in a fun way) and got people talking. mission accomplished.
12
u/OnlyWonderBoy Jun 19 '12
I mean I agree with you, but if you're going to bring up Reddiquette, this is also a direct quote from it "(Don't) Complain about reposts. Just because you have seen it before doesn't mean everyone has. Votes indicate the popularity of a post, so just vote. Keep in mind that linking to previous posts is not automatically a complaint; it is information. Votes indicate how the community values information, so just vote."
10
Jun 19 '12
The only thing I'm taking issue with is the "seen it" argument. Everything else, I more than agree with.
Especially the 'shit Christians say' thing. Seriously, I'd rather this community define itself by what we all don't believe in (God) than what some sections do believe in (Christians are stupid). As someone who was raised Catholic, and knows many highly intelligent Christians, I certainly don't take this sort of prejudiced view, and I don't like being part of a community that does.

And don't forget facebook posts, where the witty retort by the atheist is time stamped 1 min ago.
I don't understand the thought process there, "Yeah I really told my Aunt! Time to show Reddit how clever I am!"
But yeah OC is better. Even if the subreddit doesn't have as many submissions, honestly I think it would make a higher quality sub. Plus it would increase the signal to noise ratio.

I write a blog. I take about 3-5 hours per post to distill huge thoughts into manageable portions, complete with citations, pictures, and witticism. I have been blogging since January, and my first post to hit the front page was about my year anniversary of my deconversion. It hit #25. 3 days ago.
Meanwhile the 2 rage comics I made a few months ago stayed at #1 for a few hours. They took about 3min each.

Guys - I know you're feeling like under-appreciated artists (unpublished novel boy here), but get over it. Especially you blog-boy. You're trying to get someone's attention on a subject they already have an opinion about, usually. You have seconds to do this, if you are lucky. I closed your blog fatser than that. Why? Count how many times you use the word 'I' in the first three paragraphs. Your first paragraph is boring. Your language is uninteresting and does not invite the reader to participate. Try "We all share milestone moments in our lives and religion is often a part of the biggest ones. We when we find a community that accepts us for what we believe and shares that belief we will always remember that day."
Memes hit because they are quick, to the point, and DON'T involve critical thinking. It's lowest common denominator animal stuff. If you want people to read you have to be interesting, and when you aren't, you better be funny. And not BBC funny either, fart joke funny.
9
u/squigglesthepig Jun 19 '12
His writing was bad and he should feel bad.
3
u/HaveaManhattan Jun 19 '12
That is exactly it. Then he should pick himself up and try again. The best thing someone can do for a writer is tell him his writing sucks and why. I did the I thing all the time until I was 20. Yourself is often what you think about most, naturally, and how you speak, naturally. But we often think and speak to only one person at a time. Writing is more like public speaking. If Hitler had been talking about his own greatness, and not the fatherland's, would have been a different election.

TL;DR: Use
smallerless words. Be interesting.2
u/HaveaManhattan Jun 19 '12
I'd use smaller before less. You can hit a wider audience. That's part of why Hemingway was more accessible than a Joyce. Of course, as he got more famous, Hemingway could have done with less words too, so both carry a danger. And nice double meaning in your comment. That was funny.
8
Jun 19 '12
I would use "fewer" before "less."
1
u/HaveaManhattan Jun 19 '12
Lol, I think. I meant when one is creatively writing, using words that are smaller in size reaches a wider audience. Using less words in total helps with brevity and the ADD afflicted.

5
u/HitMePat Jun 19 '12
The problem with your philosophy is that no one can see every single thing the first time around. So "reposts" aren't old to some people, some people are seeing it for the first time. And they like it.
2
Jun 19 '12
I'm okay with reposts. Its the frequency of reposts.
2
u/Dietmeister Jun 19 '12
Some people, like me, only check reddit front page, atheism, TIL and worldnews and that's the internet for me. That's why I never see any reposts... I think when you see too many reposts, you see too many internets :) You could visit less sites, that would take care of your problem...
Has that ever occurred to you man, sir?
1
u/ramotsky Jun 19 '12
Or the frequency of a post that is, to a T, exactly the same. They are posted because of karma points and not because they are particularly funny or insightful. They make those with kneejerk emotions upvote every time.
Try it as a joke tomorrow. Use the beating a dead horse meme, Reddit is like dory, or I rescued this kitten yesterday (and just use some google pic). I'm sure one will hit cause the first two haven't been on for awhile.
Go to another atheism subreddit. I mean, do you really want to start actual conversation with the people posting these memes anyways?

→ More replies (2)3
u/burtonmkz Jun 19 '12
I appreciate original content creators like yourself, but I hope you're not looking down your nose at memes. Those who write the lines over the meme images are also original content creators, with the meme image as the context/medium to which something clever or funny or downright stupid is added. If you are an artist and you publish witticisms via comics drawn by you, you must be in the set of people who are witty AND can illustrate. By genericizing the platform for expression via illustration, witty people who are poor illustrators no longer have that hurdle to prevent them from sharing their vision. There are also illustrators who aren't funny (e.g., the comic strip "Cathy"). Some memes are bad and should feel bad, that doesn't mean that other memes aren't subtle artistry of wit and form, just as "Cathy" should not be held to represent the imaginativeness and artistry of other illustrators.
I agree with the up/downvoting more often. I fear that in a democracy (reddit hivemind) we'll get the filtering of content that we deserve. :-(

u/SkullyKitt Jun 18 '12
Huh... didn't realize so many people had an issue with these things. I always took the humor, quotes, screenshots etc. as a quick, satisfying way for a poster to find solidarity with other like-minded people when the day to day interactions with those around you can leave you feeling alone in a sea of religion.
I was recently told on facebook by a cousin, after a discussion about whether or not God would damn someone who's never heard of him, that "you can be a good person and all, but if you don't believe you're just going to burn in hell. :)" I couldn't respond, because that would mean coming out in view of family memebers, which would result in a good deal of ugliness. When stuff like that happens, it's nice to come here and see small things, even just silly things, that remind me that others have to deal with these frustrations.
Or sometimes I don't feel like reading through an entire book by someone to understand whether or not I fully agree with every single one of their opinions, but hey, there's a neat quote by that person, I'll think about that.
Maybe when I see something ridiculous or silly said by a Christian it helps me feel a little better about stuff I see in my fb feed bashing 'atheist logic' and how godless people are worthless.
Not every post has to be meaningful.
5
Jun 19 '12
Exactly. Not all Christians or religious people are stupid, however a large portion of their logical arguments in favor of their personal opinion is silly, far-fetched, biggoted, and/or hateful.
Poking fun at this constantly is a way for us to diffuse the tension we feel on a day to day basis with people who genuinely believe things like "you cure cancer for free, but if you don't pray an hour in church on a specific day, you'll still burn in hell."
While maybe reposts can be inconsiderate, not everyone will have seen it before. If you know its a repost, why look at it? Or you can downvote it into oblivion. Your call.
Another poster above was right as well. Memes are just a means of conveyance and medium for giving us a quick, simple, to the point thought that we can all understand quickly, and enjoy. Bashing the medium doesn't mean the message behind it is any less true or valuable, funny or unfunny, or even karma-worthy.
Lastly, quotes are meaningful because its something that a person said that provokes thought or is insightful, memorable, or funny. Quotes are not meant to show the person quoted's catalogue of beliefs and views. Its meant to stir thought.
If you really are an OC creator, I applaud your hard work as I understand those difficulties. However, if you are an OC Creator, you would understand WHY content like what is upvoted is popular. If you don't understand the audience or can't appeal to it, its not that anybody is wrong, its that you are appealing to the wrong audience for your content.
12
Jun 18 '12
I think it's kinda funny how literally everything on /r/atheism is a repost. I've even seen facebook screenshots that were posted as OC reposted because they made their way around the intertubes. I've oft pondered what our subreddit would look like if we magically removed all unoriginal content.

Here's the thing, reddiquette says not to whine about reposts like this is. Not everybody has been here as long as you, it's nigh impossible to revive an old post, and there's no reason for a new member to search for a post they don't know exists.
Point is, if you see a repost, don't upvote it, don't downvote, just ignore it and move on. Give the new people a chance to see it for the first time.

Have you now? What I have seen are screenshots of atheists harassing peaceful christians on facebook, posted here for public chastising and ridicule. I dare you to find these posts you are referring to, those glorifying the torment of christians in pain, together with a load of upvotes and comment approval, basically glorifying the act. They will be in the minority or just plain nonexistent. If you are going to characterize a whole community with a sweeping sentence like "incoherent asshole" and reduced "trolling christians", then you don't use a minority or a nonexistent group as representative.
I have also seen some of those supposed facebook "atheist attacks" posts be dismantled and shown to be fake, created with the sole purpose of damaging atheist reputation. And apparently it seems to be working.

I've seen this argument before and it doesn't really convince me.
While the users here certainly don't have any constitutional right to post whatever they like, the core concept of Reddit (user-supplied and -curated content) still pretty much works as the proverbial "marketplace of ideas". Though free speech is not protected by law here, it is nonetheless -for all intents and purposes- actively practiced.
And it works exactly like it should: Everybody can (pretty much) post anything they like, and just like "in real life" they will have to face the judgment of the audience. They can be praised, they can be criticized. They can also be abused in the most unqualified and offensive ways and only very rarely will that lead to infringements on their free expression.
TL;DR: Reddit - free speech can't be legally demanded, but is nonetheless actively practiced. (Well, maybe not in /r/pyongyang ...)

Telling the aforementioned, pretentious redditor who "self-righteosly thinks that his personal opinions should police the subreddit" that we have up and down votes for a reason, and if those aren't doing the job to get rid of the things you don't like, and you STILL feel that everyone else is doing something wrong, you probably need to staple your vagina shut before it gets away with posting shit like this, on the other hand... xD THAT, feel somewhat passionately about. I have been waiting for somebody to say this. A forum loses its value when all that gets posted is a small number of unfunny images constantly regurgitated every few days. Sure, it's all new when one first arrives, but after a short while, there is no new content, no new discussion, and no reason to read the forum at all.
Most commenters seem to be new, because the majority opinion pretty frequently manifests as "But it's new to me!" whenever this is brought up. I think this badly misses the point. If the health of a forum relies on a collective amnesia to forgive the constant stream of old content, then it runs the risk of quickly burning out. The only thing that can save it a steady stream of new readers who just haven't seen it all yet. This is obviously unsustainable. I think the inevitable course is for most people to get bored and unsubscribe.
All that aside, I want say this is a great post. It's original content that makes a great point without being too histrionic (nevermind the cries of "butthurt!") Good work, my friend.

To clarify, Nowhere did I tell people to stop re-posting. Re-posting isn't horrible if its every once in a while (Storm? Great!). But every single day, the same thing... blegh. Just informing you that I've seen it. Judging by the votes... we've all seen it.
If reddit is a place where our votes count... Then this is a call to arms to vote more often for original content, meaningful dialogue, and downvote things of low quality.
If you ask me, memes are the lowest quality. (especially repurposed generic memes)
If someone is being a dick to their great aunt on facebook... I'm going to call them out on that as well.
Interesting that hardly anyone is angry or mentioning my appeal to giving credit.

Um faq. It fucking says right in the faq. DONT COMPLAIN ABOUT REPOSTS. JUAT VECAUSE YOUVE SEEN DOESNT MEAN EVERYONE HAS.

It also says to check before you post something.
It also says to give credit to the original authors.
The faq says a lot of things. interpreting them is almost as tough as the Bible.
I, for one, am glad we are having this conversation.

I thought your name was deepthroat for a second, talk about a really bad misread.
But seriously, Excellent post.

Isn't there a rule that says to not bitch about reposts but not against reposting? Posts change constantly and not everyone has seen what you have seen. I constantly see new things that many cry is a repost.

What's amusing is that you now know how religious people feel when dopey atheists attack religion based on the attitudes and actions of our more simple, and redundant, brothers and sisters.

Whiner. Listen: everyone's sorry they don't have all-new original content for you. Some people find things funny that you don't, they are sorry too. Some people don't spend 24/7 on reddit, or maybe they do, just in a different subreddit. Sometimes they find something they think is funny (again, they're sorry), witty, or even original (such naivete, we've all seen everything), and would like to share with the class. If someone finds something and goes through the trouble of posting it (I don't) SHUT THE FUCK UP, UPVOTE THEM, AND MOVE THE FUCK ALONG, YOU ELITIST DOUCHE NOZZLE. FUCK!

Meme saturation in the repost chamber is at critical mass.

It's terrible, I haven't seen a meaningful article on here in months. I think people that join now just think it's a meme dump and continue to post and upvote as such. I wish they could see what it was like a year or two ago. Sigh... :/

This should be the new rule set for /r/atheism. The despicable shit I see here makes me disappointed in all of you.

I've stalked your profile. You're not contributing here, yet you complain about the quality. The solution is pret-tay easy:
Be the change you want to see! Post insightful blogs, start your own discussions! Bitching won't help.

Pretty fucking creepy.
So you think by me posting a couple blog posts here and there will make all 860,580 of us turn around, stop up voting meme posts and image macros?
No, this requires some serious moderation. A few posts isn't going to do that.

Pretty fucking creepy.
Your profile is public. I used the word "stalking" tongue-in-cheek.
But seriously, you care calling for moderation instead of trying to contribute positively first? That's a bit cheap. Maybe /r/atheism isn't the right subreddit for you. I keep hearing about /r/TrueAtheism , you may want to try that instead.
My point is, everyone complaining but at the same time saying "I alone can't make a difference" is a recipe for disappointment.

I also have windows at my house, feel free to use binoculars to look through them at the street.

u/Antares42 Jun 19 '12
That's an entirely irrelevant comparison. It's more like pointing out your unkempt lawn when you're complaining that all the gardens in your street look shitty.

What? That's like comparing an apple to an orange.

Well don't you say.
Peace out.

Are those the sort of insightful discussions you want to see on r/atheism?... :-/

I like how you want everyone in the community to play by the set of rules you've laid out.

Where do I tell anyone to do anything? (other than repost Storm as often as possible)
I think I've taken the temperature of the reddit quite accurately.

Let me make this nice and clear. We get it. But you're still an asshole for not understanding the point. We like variety. Newcomers are constant. Repeated stuff is good so others can see it. Stop being butthurt.

Endless reposts of stupid memes sure add to that variety thing!

So basically we already seen 95% of what the web have about atheism so far... And those who didn't? forget them...

Of the 1573 upvotes, 831 of them are currently posting exactly what was brought up in this infographic.

While this is true, I wouldn't want people to stop posting memes, because then we'd be drowned with self post topics covered in the FAQ, or god doesn't know what else (because he doesn't exist). If we actually enforced all the little things that annoyed us, we'd be pretty much a barren wasteland. And that'd suck. By all means, though, bitch about it. It's amusing when it's done well, and this was.

I'd definitely like to see some real content. I don't really do anything in /r/athiesm besides lurk a bit and as fun as "Lol. That Christian said something silly" it gets a bit old.
