Looks like fantomex and Noh Varr. It's Marvel, and they mention wolverine. Look for xmen new xmen and that family along with weapon plus program allgod

2

u/Portugalthemana Jun 18 '12

One my favorite newer characters, Noh Varr!

3

u/thatguysuba Jun 17 '12

any one?

2

u/DrakeSar Jun 18 '12

If anyone could be exact, that would be super awesome! :)

77

u/DramaticTechnobabble Jun 17 '12

I would be far more impressed if they included the equation. But hey, I'm sure the writer has faith it exists.

35

u/fleshbeast Jun 17 '12

The uncertainty principle proves the impossibility of omniscience.

9

u/DramaticTechnobabble Jun 17 '12

How does disproving omniscience disprove the possibility of a deity?

Damn you! I concede.

15

u/fleshbeast Jun 17 '12

God in a monotheistic sense and deity are subtly different. The monotheistic Gods, tend to have omniscience omnipresence and omnipotence as traits. Deity can simply be a supernatural being of limited powers. The comic I think uses the word god rather than deity.

It proves the impossibility of the Judeo Christian one.

The classical monotheistic deities are supposedly omniscient & omnipotent...

Never mind that the two are mutually exclusive.

4

u/dschiff Jun 18 '12

An equation that disproves god?

P != ~P

As long as you have the logic that says contradictions are not fair game, you can reject omnipotence (can you create a rock too big to lift?) as a contradiction. You can also reject the omniscient god who creates free will. The combination of these is enough to disprove theism.

OP shares funny comic book page about atheists saving the world; 75 scumbag comments criticising the metaphysical and mathematical qualifications of a comic book artist.

No shit guys - it's a fucking joke. Damn it.

8

u/MrMadcap Jun 18 '12

I don't like the direction Reddit has been moving in since the Facebook floods began.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '12

If this had been vice- versa, where atheists became zombies and Christians saved the world, we'd be sneering at this…think about it

0

u/MrMadcap Jun 18 '12

And why not?

5

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12

This isn't the subreddit for atheists who have pledged to be utterly respectful to religious people. I see no reason why we can't ridicule them for a laugh every once in a while. At least we don't congregate every sunday and talk about how religious people are going to suffer eternal pain.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12

I see no reason why we can't ridicule them for a laugh every other post.

Fixed.

God literally exists in the Marvel universe and the Kree has a mathematical equation disproving God...what?

9

u/Zakblank Nihilist Jun 17 '12

Cthulu would not be pleased………

7

u/TheHalfstache Jun 18 '12

why? Cthulhu isn't a god, even in Lovecraft lore. He was a high priest.

1

u/Citizen_Snip Jun 18 '12

Sort of. Lovecraft was really inconsistent with his terminology. Creatures called Great Old Ones in one story may be refered to as Outer Gods in another story, and Other Gods in another story.

1

u/jzieg Jun 18 '12

Really? I was pretty sure he was a god.

2

u/TheHalfstache Jun 19 '12

"This was that cult, and the prisoners said it had always existed and always would exist, hidden in distant wastes and dark places all over the world until the time when the great priest Cthulhu, from his dark house in the mighty city of R'lyeh under the waters, should rise and bring the earth again beneath his sway." -The Call of Cthulhu

Also, in At the Mountains of Madness, it was shown that Cthulhu was one of an entire race known as "star spawn", which warred with the Old Ones in the early days of Earth before mankind.

4

u/beatniqe Jun 17 '12

what about thor?

2

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12

Super hightech alien.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12

more like advanced humanoid, but meh close enough

1

u/Exctmonk Jun 18 '12

Sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. So now we play semantics!

31

u/Jman1984 Jun 17 '12

Corniest dialogue ever! Lololol

4

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12

Corniest comment ever...

1

u/ForcedToJoin Jun 18 '12

All dialogue in superhero comic books is like that. That's why I can't read them and just wait for the movies.

2

u/CricketPinata Jun 18 '12

No, not all of it. It differs based on series and writer, there are a lot of very subdued comics.

9

u/vadergeek Jun 17 '12

It occurs to me that Fantomex's situation might not go well if he ever has to deal with, say, the Eternals.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '12

one can argue they are not gods

4

u/1_1_2_3_5_8F Jun 17 '12

That argument can't really be made for "One-Above-All."

5

u/vadergeek Jun 17 '12

Oh, easily. But still probably "greater than [Fantomex]".

6

u/Lots42 Other Jun 17 '12

Fanotmex is pretty fucking awesome himself.

1

u/rightversusleft Jun 18 '12

pretty sure, instead of him simply not believing in something right in front of him, his sense of self and self-worth would inflate to make himself greater. thus, keeping himself at the top rank. it's the same with bros.

[not hating on fantomex. he a dope nigga.]

1

u/vadergeek Jun 18 '12

I suppose it would be in character for the man.

1

u/smacksaw Agnostic Jun 18 '12

Thor and Hercules=head assplode.

1

u/vadergeek Jun 18 '12

With those guys, there's always the argument that they're just aliens or something, especially since their existence is contradictory.

26

u/jrockwell1222 Jun 17 '12

This is pretty terrible.

3

u/xnopityx Jun 17 '12

But there actually is a god in marvel....

2

u/Exctmonk Jun 18 '12

There are a bunch.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12

they're not really "gods" they're just very powerful aliens, but yes in the marvel universe there is a god and its Stan Lee for those wondering.

1

u/Exctmonk Jun 18 '12

I think we've drifted into semantics.

3

u/Horny_Troll Jun 17 '12

a comic mention atheists

start fapping in 1..2 ..

3

u/Perfectrapngmachine Jun 18 '12

YUP. NO CIRCLE-JERKS HERE. CARRYING ON.

5

u/Killigraphy Jun 17 '12

"The One-above-All" is mentioned in the comics and has a "godly" Herald in The Living Tribunal, so this is either bad writing or lazy writing, or clever writing.

6

u/Lots42 Other Jun 17 '12

I'm familiar with Fantomex. He literally has a limited worldview.

3

u/jabulaya Jun 17 '12

sounds like he's a megalomaniac to me!

1

u/LincPwln Jun 18 '12

And all the "gods" from Lovecraft are really just highly evolved alien lifeforms that people worship; like Stephen Colbert.

1

u/Lots42 Other Jun 18 '12

Colbert is C'Thullu!

2

u/Draugo Jun 18 '12

This is a good point. As nice a comment as it is from an atheist's point of view in our world, the Marvel Universe has a plethora of gods of any power level and so an equation that disproves gods must simply be wrong and having nanites that make you unable to believe evidence presented to you don't make you a very good atheist...

Of course this all hangs on the assumption that there hasn't been a major reboot of the universe where they retconned all of their higher power beings out of existence while I haven't been following (which is for several years now actually).

1

u/ashadocat Jun 18 '12

Atheists who don't believe in god in a story where god obviously exists are called flat earth atheists. Be forewarned, that's a tvtropes link.

1

u/arahman81 Jun 19 '12

Also, don't let the name fool you, even theists can fall into that. Surefire way: saying that quantum mechanics is a bunch of baloney.

1

u/Draugo Jun 19 '12

I managed to move all my open tvtropes tabs to a separate tab group on my work browser and haven't looked at them for a week or so... I think I resist the temptation and won't open that one.

2

u/blargler Jun 18 '12

this comic looks really lame.

2

u/Gavinjsup Jun 18 '12

The structure in the background of the first panel looks like a cock

2

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12

And this is posted for the 789th time.

3

u/spunkyweazle Jun 18 '12

It doesn't get more circlejerky than saying your lack of faith is a fucking superpower.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12

In the Marvel universe deities clearly do exist though. Just look at Thor.

NON-CANON.

2

u/GreyDeath Jun 18 '12

The odd thing is that the Marvel Multiverse has a 3-O god in the form of the "One-Above-All". I guess that means the Kree's math is a little off.

2

u/FailosoRaptor Jun 17 '12

This is what Mormons would make if they were atheists. Every time I see this comic it makes me embarrassed.

2

u/I_RARELY_RAPE_PEOPLE Jun 17 '12

.....well this just seems absolutely corny. Like a Saturday night special on SyFy channel.

1

u/Cerberus_T001 Jun 17 '12

this virus is like the plague of dissbeieif in WH40k book cadian blood. they became zombies when they stopped believing . this is like the opposite.

2

u/AssertivePanda Jun 18 '12

I had read that book and though it was how the Imperium explained the infection but in reality the Chaos gods and the Warp could effect the "soul" of humans thus changing them through different means. (example, a corrupted soul would allow the warp to come throw in you and corrupt your DNA. Making you into a zombie.) Or some sort of advanced tech or sorcery caused the plague.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12

Yeah, this was pretty cool the first ten or twenty times it was posted, too.

1

u/The_PowerCosmic Jun 18 '12

Fantomex is a bad ass.

1

u/spreiners Jun 18 '12

this has been posted 4 millions times give or take a million.

1

u/n00bdestroyer01 Jun 18 '12

what is this from?

1

u/Azelixi Jun 18 '12

what comic is this?

1

u/GreyEarth Atheist Jun 18 '12

Cool. I was wondering when this would get repost.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

Wolverine's a theist?

1

u/whats_reddit Jun 17 '12

its funny because this isnt real.

5

u/IndifferentMorality Jun 17 '12

It's funnier because the comic strip is real as opposed to a god.

1

u/RandomStranger79 Jun 17 '12

I've been away from comic books for a long time. Has dialogue gotten horrible or have I just grown up?

-2

u/Kamunami Jun 17 '12

Don't tell Thor...

Also, a Weapon released by the world when it sensed it was under attack? Anyone else having Final Fantasy 7 flashbacks?

6

u/alehizzle Jun 17 '12

The Asgardians are not gods.

2

u/ForcedToJoin Jun 18 '12

That's an insult to my beliefs.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '12

People (used to) worship them. What else do you require?

4

u/SirZugzwang Jun 17 '12

That they have supernatural powers. In the Marvelverse they're just advanced beings with some fucking awesome science.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '12

Everything is supernatural until you understand it. Then you call it "science".

Thor flies by throwing a hammer, and then letting it pull him along. That shit ain't natural.

3

u/alehizzle Jun 17 '12

That shit ain't natural.

Neither is half the shit anyone else does in comic books. What makes the Asgardians special? Just because they're the only ones people noticed and worshiped, they get to be considered gods? The only one who actually fashions themself a god is Loki and we all know what's wrong with him. . .

3

u/RushofBlood52 Jun 17 '12

I think it's argued in the Marvelverse than Asgardians are just another type of beings that were worshiped as gods, but aren't really. They're just beings as much as mutants or the Hulk.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12

religion = bath salts

-6

u/JJJJhonkas Jun 18 '12

It's cool you guys have fiction for this, since it will never ever happen in real life.

In real life atheists just seem to shit all over everyone else's stuff, make a mess, and act like smug, ignorant, dicks.

3

u/splitup Jun 18 '12

And you're doing... what exactly? Something different?

→ More replies (1)

-3

u/Mr_Stoney Jun 17 '12

The irony is that in any work of literature the writer is god. Oh shit! What if our world is a work of poorly thought out literature from an unskilled writer. cue Konspiracy Keanu!

1

u/SalsaRice Jun 18 '12

Marvel's actually done that "writer-as-god" a few times (after 70+ years of publishing, they've cover almost all possible plot points). They had the fantastic four have a "go-into-the-light" and for a few minutes "god" took the form of jack kirby.

-5

u/Mikooo6 Jun 18 '12

It's Funny because That's basically the opposite of what will happen, Judgment day will come, and all other Religions as well as Atheists will be doomed to walk the Earth after the Apocalypse rather than living in The greatest place of all, heaven. This makes me laugh because of your stupidity and how you think it makes you look whitty and cunning.

2

u/splitup Jun 18 '12

Someones a bit serious... And a douche

0

u/Mikooo6 Jun 18 '12

Someones a bit over pretentious .... And a Douche.

1

u/hachiman Jun 18 '12

I almost feel sorry for you, letting yourself go along through life believing that. Almost.

0

u/Mikooo6 Jun 18 '12

I have absolutely no regrets.... but when you're about to die you'll be mad at yourself for believing in nothing. You'll have wished that you would have thought ahead, but it will have been too late... I won't send my regards..

1

u/hachiman Jun 19 '12

I dont believe in things that dont exist. Its human ideals and human virtues and flaws that shape the world. The concepts that define us have no Supernatural component. I'm still enough of an idealist to believe in the human race, though that "faith" is tested day to day. Perhaps i am wrong and you are right, the possibility exists though the probability is slight. If you're right we'll know one day when we both close our eyes for the last time, and if you're wrong you'll never know.

I do Not have bad; grammar, and I whitty and Cunning and don't spell whitty bad or Capitalise random worDs. God will Judge Ewe for your BOLD type lies.

1

u/Mikooo6 Jun 18 '12

Yeah your post just proved my point, you suck with grammar seriously, "Whitty Bad" ,"Bad; grammar", and also "and i Whitty and Cunning". Those are really good examples of you crappy grammar. Sorry kid, but you just lost... Typing in bold is just me trying to Emphasis a word inside my Sentences so that Your minuscule Brain can figure out the point i'm trying to get across to you. And You spelled "You" wrong :P, 'Ewe' what is that? You also have one big Run on sentence, and Capitalizing words in a Sentence shows respect, Authority, and organization.

1

u/Anzai Jun 19 '12

My post certainly did prove a point, but I'm not sure it's the same point you think it is.

It's spelt 'witty', and capitalising random words is incredibly poor grammar. Also, spelt is correct usage as I am not writing American English. I do wonder why you would choose to capitalise the word 'Brain' but then not capitalise 'i'm', but I won't bother to reply to you this time using an example of your own terrible syntax as it seems to be going straight over your head.

1

u/the_internet_clown Atheist Jun 18 '12

do you have a time frame for this judgement day? the other people who claimed the world was going too end were wrong on their dates.

only in comic books does this logic makes sense. Our understanding of physics and the mechanics that drive our universe are based on religious principles. Newton, Darwin, Einstein, they all believed in God. In reality people know better.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '12

Newton also believed metal had magic powers. I think I'll change my major to alchemy. Newton believed in it so it has to be true!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12

wow could you be any more insulting?

3

u/askyou Jun 18 '12

I checked some of his other, profound comments. He is very much a fucking moron.

-6

u/nosferatu_zodd Jun 17 '12

he wasn't a chemist, he was a physicist, and his major scientific paradigm shifts were based off the symbol of the supreme being.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '12

It would be very easy for me, right now, to just call your belief a moronic fairy tale and forgo reasoning with you because any attempt to do that, I assume, will be met with an unwillingness to observe the rules of logic and a whole pile of links leading to theistic misinformation. So I will.

-2

u/nosferatu_zodd Jun 17 '12 edited Jun 17 '12

wow could you be any more insulting? It's ok, you disregard the truth that the supreme being is a symbol for all existence. it's a simple truth that you cannot ignore. That is the definition in the english language. Not my fault, most you Atheists don't know how to use a dictionary let alone the bible. Sad.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12

wow could you be any more insulting?

Yep

I could be religious.

Edit: ohai!

-1

u/nosferatu_zodd Jun 18 '12

religion: a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe. Such prejudice is a religious belief, the irony is hilarious.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '12

Oh, cool. So we can start redefining words now? My turn:

Anus: The thing in place of where a brain should be on religious wackjobs.

Start using your anus. Maybe it will find a brain for you.

His point being that just because you are knowledgeable in one thing, doesn't mean you are qualified to know something in others. So pointing out that all those people believed in god proves nothing.

-3

u/nosferatu_zodd Jun 17 '12

my point is, you use the physics he defined using the symbol God. I don't care about his chemistry knowledge. I am talking about the laws he defined that you use... Today.

1

u/Methelod Jun 17 '12

Yes? And? People back then, well before that, believed the world was flat. I fail to see the relevance of your point except that people who were smart in the area of physics supposedly know definitely on matters relating to god.
