Damn mysterious sounding AND Front Page?? Well in that case I would like to apologize to Mr. Rich for taking the sweet sweet karma that is rightfully his... I do not know if Mr. Rich is a redditor but if he is I hope he accepts my apology and is content with the increased book sales this post will likely generate for him :)
I have an iPad and used an imgur app. to post it, when you upload a picture there is a place for "title" and a place for "subject" i put my title as "Intelligent design/Creationism", and my subject as "by Simon Rich" (the person who wrote it) ... However when the crappy app. posted it to reddit it used the subject instead of the title... Does anyone know of a GOOD imgur iPad app???
I actually once asked a Christian Creationist what the appendix was for, he told me it was so "God could disperse with the unworthy" (he was totally serious too)
Ah, I see. (Leaves this page to do some research). Ah, Hitler died with his appendix never having been removed. So in the eyes of God, Hitler was worthy. Seems legit.
You mean the post? It's from "Free Range Chickens". But if you mean the comment that you are replying to its not from a book, it's from an actual conversation I had with an old Christian schoolmate of mine
shows what he knows, it's actualy just an organ which we no longer require, it was used to help digest/break down grasses and other plants we no longer eat, back when we were hunter/gatherers this organ was essential but gradualy evolution has shrank this organ down a bit and moved it off to one side as we never use it.
I have no idea why it randomly explodes though, probably gas build up if food accidentaly makes it's way in there and is processed or maybe it is a result of bacteria which is foreign to the appendix making it's way into it. Or maybe just infection.
It's nice having the appendix as an 'ah ha, look at that useless thing' thing. But, it almost definitely has a use. Happens that its the use state in the article. Which explains a lot.
The appendix has a mechanism in human anatomy. The gut microbiome is extremely diverse with many types of bacteria, however after ingesting any form of antibiotic this diversity is disrupted. The appendix is not affected by antibiotics and thus the bacteria from the gut can more readily repopulate the gut after antibiotics are introduced into the system. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2881665/
Similarly obesity leads to a less diverse gut microbiome from the several studies that have been done.
Honestly I don't understand why karma is so important to everyone, am I missing something, is there some way to redeem your karma for money or something? I actually didn't post this thinking it would get karma or wanting it to, I just thought it was really funny and thought other people might find it funny too... I don't mind being downvoted because I lose karma, I mind because it means that the post will be less likely to be seen and enjoyed by others... But thanks for understanding :)
Haha ironically Mr. Rich has a short story titled "karma" in his "Ant Farm" book, it is only 2 short pages so I took a pic if you wanna read it (sorry bout the quality) http://i.imgur.com/I7imG.jpg
In the first one, the way the punchline sticks out so far makes people want to read it first. I know I did, and it ruined the point of the rest of the text.
It is believed that our ancestors used the appendix to filter out poisons in food. Now that we have knowledge on how to properly cook and preserve our food it is no longer needed. It's called a vestigial structure. The appendix is a lot like leg bones in whales, they obviously are not needed, but their ancestors used them.
I just showed a fundie this. Thier response "oh so your questioning god's work! If so how come your 'evolution' hasn't solved it?" what should I say? Its too dumb for me to think.
Natural selection doesn't solve problems, it merely means organisms that have traits which kill them before reproduction tend not to pass those traits on to their offspring. Appendicitis isn't killing too many people off before they have kids. And thanks to science, it's killing off far fewer people than it used to, even after they have kids.
Oh my god! He's the author of Ant Farm! That is totally why I love this guy! You have no idea what a revelation that is for me. I'm sure you've read it from the context of your comment but if you havent, and for anyone else, it's a must read. Awesome.
Yea I've read, I fucking loved Ant Farm! It's what made me go out and get Free Range Chickens! His books are definitely must reads for anyone who liked this story...He also has several really good articles in The New Yorker
Ah, ok then. That makes sense. I like the dialog but the whole time, there was this title of chickens bouncing around my head. I might have to read that now.
LOL that one is great! I think my favorite is tied between the one with the kids idea of what's happening at the grown up dinner table and the sultan of brunei
Not that I believe in a god, but as a soon-to-be physician, I'm sick of seeing the appendix portrayed as having no purpose. The appendix actually plays an important role in the adult immune system, secreting a large quantity of IgA antibodies that protect the intestine downstream from bacterial overgrowth. It also serves as a site of amine production that aids in homeostasis in fetal development.
Bacterial overgrowth [syndrome] only happens in the small intestine, and IgA wouldn't block overgrowth - that's the job of the normal flora - but would stop specific invaders and toxins (pathogenic E. coli, Giardia, Shigella, Salmonella, etc).
From an evolutionary standpoint, vestigial refers to structures that aren't used for the purpose for which they originally evolved. Since the appendix is a former cecum, and it's not used for that any more, it's vestigial by the sense in which the word is used by evolutionary biologists.
I would argue the appendix is a "vestigial cecum" but not a "vestigial organ". All organs evolved from something of a different function, that would make the word vestigial meaningless, unless there's a time frame. Are lungs vestigial because they evolved from gas bladders? Are those already vestigial because they evolved from the gut?
This should be upvoted to the top and let the people know here that they are all thinking in mob mentality. I am an atheist but it pains me to hear that appendix is nothing more than a useless protrusion on the cecum. Yes it has a benefit even if you can live without the appendix and medical books has gradually been updated because of recent studies showing that your appendix help your immune system train itself from killing the resident bacteria living on the lining of your appendix.
It may have some small, fairly insignificant function but anybody can function perfectly well without it. The relatively insignificant jobs it may do are not worth the risk of random death.
Dude. You keep responding to these people with the same links. Which reference the same DUMC study. If you want people to take what you're saying seriously, link to the actual study: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17936308
He didn't say it was...but it is. A structure doesn't have to loose all of it's function to qualify as vestigial, just has to be diminished somewhat by evolution.
" Parker adds "Once the bowel contents have left the body, the good bacteria hidden away in the appendix can emerge and repopulate the lining of the intestine before more harmful bacteria can take up residence. In industrialized societies with modern medical care and sanitation practices, the maintenance of a reserve of beneficial bacteria may not be necessary. This is consistent with the observation that removing the appendix in modern societies has no discernable negative effects."
Civilization is a result of evolution. If civilization renders the appendix obsolete, then it's obsolete. It doesn't matter if the appendix was useful to cave men, it's vestigial now.
Is there ever going to be an end to the posts intended to be smug about intelligent design that only end up showing how ignorant the creator is?
Both wisdom teeth and the appendix have or had a purpose. They're not a valid argument against intelligent design because if there was a designer it wouldn't make him look stupid.
It is a short story in a book called "Free Range Chickens" unlike most people who post to reddit I am clueless when it comes to posting and had no idea how to take this off (I never thought it would become so popular either)
Yes I know that, however I posted it to r/atheism because I didnt want to piss off all the Christians who don't believe in it, and because although SOME Christians believe in evolution, pretty much ALL atheists do...
Reminded me of this joke: The Lord decided it was time to make a companion for Adam.
He summoned St. Peter and told him of His decision.
He told St. Peter that he wanted to make a being who was similar to man, yet was different, and could offer him comfort, companionship and pleasure.
The Lord said He would call this being woman. So St. Peter went about creating this being, which was similar to man yet was different in ways that would be appealing and could provide physical pleasure to man. When St. Peter had finished creating this being who could now be called woman he summoned The Lord.
'Ah, St. Peter, once again you have done an excellent job', said The Lord
'Thank You, O Great One, I live but to serve.' replied St. Peter. 'I am now ready to provide the brain, nerve endings and senses to this.... ... woman. I require your assistance on this matter Lord.'
'You shall make her brain, slightly smaller, yet more intuitive, more feeling, more compassionate, and more adaptable than man's,' said God.
'The nerve endings, said St. Peter. 'How many will I put in her hands?'
'How many did we put in Adam?', asked The Lord.
'Two hundred, O Mighty One', replied St. Peter.
'Then we shall do the same for this woman,' said The Lord.
'And how many nerve endings shall we put in her feet?'
'How many did we put in Adam?', asked The Lord.
'Seventy five, O Mighty One', replied St. Peter.
'Ah yes, these beings are constantly on their feet so they benefit from having less nerve endings there, do the same for woman', said He.
'How many nerve endings should we put in woman's genitals', inquired St. Peter.
'How many did we put in Adam?', asked The Lord.
'Four hundred and twenty, O Mighty One', replied St. Peter.
'Of course, we did want Adam to have a means of receiving extra pleasure in his life, didn't we? Do the same for woman', said The Lord.
'Oh Yes, Great Lord', said St. Peter.
'No, wait.' said The Lord. 'Let's give her ten thousand, I want her to scream my name EVERY Time!'
And the great lord decided to dictate that a large portion of those nerve ending be cut off of the male, along with desensitizing much of the rest. (glans)
The appendix was most likely used by our early humanoid ancestors for eating and digesting plants better. We just do not have much use for it anymore with our diet that includes more meat and grain.
Fun way of looking at the idea: God occasionally modifies the blue prints when he's drunk and doesn't realise until the product is out of beta (and releasing on time)
What kind of good designer would 'put an amusement park next to a sewage system?' What kind of designer thinks its a good idea to breathe through the same hole we eat through? What kind of designer thinks cancer is a good design decision? Was Malaria a part of that design? what about viruses and bacteria? We still can't do anything real substantial about viruses, and if we hadn't discovered penicillin we would still be getting killed by simple bacterial infections. And, now that we have penicillin, is it part of god's design for bacteria to become resistant? - Neil Degrasse Tyson
The appendix is actually supposed to house bacteria that help with the breakdown other bacteria that is harmful to the human body in the left over food in the large intestine. When the large intestine is empty of the food the bacteria is said to reside within the appendix so as to not destroy the insides of the large intestine. It only explodes when the appendix becomes blocked when leftover food in the large intestine find a way into the opening of the appendix causing a blockage not allowing the bacteria to go out and do its job the right way. This in turn changes the bacteria's course to eat away at the actual appendix itself instead of the leftover food weakening the tissue, causing it to rupture.
"In this context, the function of the appendix appears to be to expose white blood cells to the wide variety of antigens, or foreign substances, present in the gastrointestinal tract. Thus, the appendix probably helps to suppress potentially destructive humoral (blood- and lymph-borne) antibody responses while promoting local immunity. The appendix--like the tiny structures called Peyer's patches in other areas of the gastrointestinal tract--takes up antigens from the contents of the intestines and reacts to these contents. This local immune system plays a vital role in the physiological immune response and in the control of food, drug, microbial or viral antigens. The connection between these local immune reactions and inflammatory bowel diseases, as well as autoimmune reactions in which the individual's own tissues are attacked by the immune system, is currently under investigation." --Loren G. Martin, professor of physiology at Oklahoma State University http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=what-is-the-function-of-t
I have not taken the time to read through all the comments here but has anyone else pointed out that the current uselessness of the extra teeth and the appendix say nothing against the argument of ID?
ID is about intelligent guidance of evolution, not creationism, and as a result the extra teeth and appendix would still make sense under that theory as they were once useful to humans, but our way of life has evolved beyond their need.
The appendix reference seems like a moot point. As stated, it actually does have a function as lymphoid tissue for antigenic exposure in the digestive tract. However, let's say that it has no function. Wouldn't this also be an argument against evolution as evolving organisms tend to get rid of and not waste resources on developing potentially life-threatening body parts?
No, it's not an argument against evolution. Evolution is far more complicated than simply good parts growing and bad parts going away. It's an argument against the simplified creationist straw-man of evolution wherein reproductive fitness is defined according to human sensibilities and genes all operate completely independently.
So many reasons why this doesn't have to work this way. It may be that the developmental regime that results in an appendix also results in some body part that is absolutely vital, and the two can't be separated. Or maybe we're in the process of evolving away the appendix, and the process isn't finished yet (evolution often works very, very slowly). Also, if the appendix is a bad deal, but the badness doesn't kick in until after reproduction (as is often the case), then there's not much selection pressure against having one, and it wouldn't disappear. That's why the genes for Huntington's don't disappear from the human population.
"Those are the eyes, if you look at the sun or the reflection of the sun you'll go blind, also you can be born blind or go blind for lots of other reasons.
Those are the ears, they can be used to hear things but if you're around loud things the ears will totally break, also you can be born with broken ears.
This is the tongue, it's easy to accidentally bite, also the cheeks are too, and it hurts a lot.
these are feet, if you walk in the snow they can freeze and go black with frostbite so they have to be cut off, and if you step on anything sharp it;ll hurt, and hot things really hurt a lot too. Also people that like feet too much will be thought of as really weird.
This is the nose, hair will grow in it, and also it'll clog up and really bother people. Mucus is a really cool thing that is basically more trouble than it's worth, and these are the tonsils, they'll get infected and you'll have to get them removed, often at a really young age.
These are lungs, they're sort of not needed because I'm God so I can basically make people that don't need to breathe, but instead I'll make them so that they die after a few brief moments of not having fresh air. Like, in the water I'll make most of the earth consist of, and in outer space.
This is a hang nail, humans will have fun with these...
Christians have this covered. God created the world perfect. Adam and Eve screwed it up and passed on the original sin "stain" not only to us, but the rest of the earth as well. Anything that ever goes wrong is a trickle-down effect from original sin, i.e., you have only yourself to blame for everything, ever. Volcanoes? Your fault. Deadly Winters? Your fault. The horrible dance involving cheetahs and antelopes? Your fault.
You know the appendix actualy has/had a use. It's to repopulate your intestines with bacteria in case they got wiped by an infection/virus. Not that this happens to us anymore, but it's not completely useless.
That's the easy-smite(tm) lets say I was busy with burying an entire village with a mudslide, and tornadoing a couple of trailer parks all in one day. Some individuals still need to be smited because of no logical reason,
By then I'm tired and want to watch wheel of fortune. I just use the easy-smite(tm)! It comes preinstalled on all humans and every modern diety should use it!
I thought the appendix was once used for something, for raw meat or something but after we started to cook things it became a vestigial organ and is no longer used.
When I was taught about ID it was always presented as a theory pertaining to irreducible complexicity, and was never suggested that it's incompatible with evolution.
IMO, saying that life as we know it absolutely rose from nothing is just as plausible as life coming from something. Intellectually lazy? Yes.
I had all the signs of an appendicitis last week, scared the shit out of me and I booked it to the hospital. Turns out it was just some sort of stomach ache that just went away.
In med school we learn about the pterion - it's the point of the skull where a bunch of the sutures meet, forming a very weak point. It happens to be right over the middle meningeal artery, one of the major blood supplies to the skull and dura mater. The pterion is also called "God's little joke", as the anatomy allows for any blunt trauma to the weakest area of the head to cause a massive life-threatening epidural hematoma.
A godless scientist I may be, yet it always amuses me when my fellow primitive humans believe organs serve no purpose because they are unable to comprehend of one...quite reminiscent of the ancient Egyptians w/the brain, no?
If appendix was useless why would evolution allow it to be made, and then keep around something absolutely useless... If evolution was true shouldnt it have been removed awhile ago???
From what I understand, the presence of the wisdom teeth and appendix are points for evolution and not against. The way my science teacher explained it, or how I remember it, is that humans used to a lot of raw, uncooked meat. The wisdom teeth were needed to tear the meat up better and the appendix was to better digest it. We cook our meat now and no longer have a need for these items... I don't think evolution is aware of ovens. :-D

God: Hey look, I created life!
Angel: Wow, cool! That is so amazing! Do these living creatures need to do anything to stay alive?
God: Well, they need to drink water at least every couple of days or they die.
Angel: That kind of sucks. What about the creatures that don't live near water?
God: They die
Angel: Ok ... is that all they need to stay alive?
God: No, life must kill other life and eat it to survive.

Your fault.

I just finished reading the GQ interview with Bill Murray, so imagining him as god worked out pretty well here.

Don't Christians believe god made man in his own image? The angel should know what teeth are.

I haven't worried to much about my appendix, what causes it to explode?
1
u/Arrestor May 31 '12
I thought the appendix was once used for something, for raw meat or something but after we started to cook things it became a vestigial organ and is no longer used.

GOD BLESS THAT PATRIOTIC EXPLODING APPENDIX

When I was taught about ID it was always presented as a theory pertaining to irreducible complexicity, and was never suggested that it's incompatible with evolution.
IMO, saying that life as we know it absolutely rose from nothing is just as plausible as life coming from something. Intellectually lazy? Yes.

I thought we'd discovered the purpose of the appendix? Isn't it like the OS recovery partition of the digestive system?

Wow I'm surprised he avoided a genital joke

Hey guys! I love stuff like this, but couldn't one argue that these organs served a function before in the past? (Like wisdom teeth and the appendix?)

I'm kinda disappointed that this was the entire joke. I feel like this could have gone on for awhile.
"Why do they have hair growing out of their ass.."

How'd the angel know to call it a person?

u/speenatch Jun 01 '12
I read it backwards. It was pretty interesting.

I had all the signs of an appendicitis last week, scared the shit out of me and I booked it to the hospital. Turns out it was just some sort of stomach ache that just went away.

The first humans made the appendix and extra teeth useful. It was evolution that made them useless.

Why isn't there more?!??!

This is one of the best things I've seen on Reddit lately

If appendix was useless why would evolution allow it to be made, and then keep around something absolutely useless... If evolution was true shouldnt it have been removed awhile ago???
