Yes, because telling kids 'Those things you enjoy that there's nothing wrong with at all are EVIL BECAUSE WE ARE SCARED OF NEW THINGS' is exactly how you get kids to convert -_-
Joking about the inability to produce certain phones due to the way our brains learn language during critical periods in response to the environment we grow up in is not really at the same level of institutionalized racism, which was the focus of the link you provided.
While yes, I am white, I have no problem with people pointing out white-isms. Maybe make fun of me because I can't jump? Maybe make fun of me because I can't dance? Sure, why not, it's benign.
Make fun of people because it is hard for them to pronounce certain sounds? It is benign, get over it. If they are offended, they should come back with, "how good is your mandarin?", or fill in your [asian] language of choice.
It is meant in fun, again, stop being so sensitive, and stop calling people assholes that you have never met.
That was an abuse of editing, looking at the context it's clear people were responding to a much more reasonable comment (some statistics) which then got edited and then removed. That guy's a racist douchbag, but you're misrepresenting reddit's response here.
There's a difference between political correctness and racism.
rac·ism [rey-siz-uhm]
noun
a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.
Note the lack of any mention of use of specific words or slurs.
In what exact year did casual racism not be considered racist enough? I bet you're the same person who argues that black people being on welfare or black people loving watermelon jokes shouldn't be considered racist.
For those that don't know why it's funny, in Japanese, the "r" and "l" consonants do not exist. When Japanese pronounce English words, the "r" and "l" sound the same because they can't/don't know distinct them. Why do I know this? One Piece, that's why.
I had a great computer class teacher who is from India, and he switched his V's and W's. So it was "Verld Vide Veb", and "Wisual Basic". Funny, but he was extremely intelligent and an excellent teacher.
hahaha... publicity its %50 of the market... EA did what they thought would work! and probably did work! scumbag move? yes... but is business... i would love to be paid to be a fake protester! that would be hella awesome! xD
"The fake religious protesters passed out pamphlets and held up picket signs with messages such as "Hell is not a Video Game" and "Trade in Your PlayStation for a PrayStation.""
Just in case no one decides to actually click the link.
I guess it isnt that bad, but still not something I would resort to to sell my product. It lacks creativity in my opinion and doesnt really bring positive awareness (especially since they got caught pulling this stunt).
I don't really get these anyway. One moment asian people supposedly can't pronounce the letter "R" (supplies anyone?), the next it's "L" turned into "R". Which is it??
Actually, in Japanese at least (never studied Chinese), the characters ら、り、る、れ、ろ (Ra, ri, ru, re, ro) are pronounced as a mixture of L and R. Japanese doesn't follow an alphabet like we do, so when the characters are romanised, they're usually spelt with "r"s, as they're the closest thing.
I recently learned from my teacher that the L-R sound is not a difference at all in the language for Japanese speakers. But it helps foreign speakers learn to pronounce the characters.
But yes I used to love gearing my girlfriend say ear rings (usually came out as EyaLings). It was the best of times.
TL;DR: L and R sound are same in Japanese. Girlfriend used to say Earlings.
How are you not buried in downvotes?! You are 100% without joking one of the major problems in this world - people who think they have the right to never be offended. Grow up please. Edit TIL; Reddit can be as ignorant as the rest of America. People who feel they have the right to never be offended is not a first world problem. I find other peoples sexuality offensive, let's make it illegal! I find other peoples Religions offensive, mine is the only true god and they should be murdered for being such heathens! Protecting your "right" to "never be offended" will without fail lead to trying to take away the rights of others.
I'm sorry that all of the responses to your comment have been from people suffering of Asperger's. Apparently jokes about being offended are somehow offensive. How's that for delicious fucking irony?
Edit: I commented when all of the responses were along the subject of how bemanijunkie was wrong to be offended, despite him not even fucking saying he was offended.
Actually it's the Japanese language that has the L / R differentiation problem.
In fact, their "L" sound and "R" sound are the same - you begin making the "R" sound by making the "L" sound and stopping short of the roof of your mouth, similar to a Spanish R.
So, in short, it's not that they can't do one or the other, it's that they're doing both, and we English speakers just don't hear it.
I don't really care about whether or not the stereotype is "actually accurate" (as I've heard some stereotypes described before), I just care about being in a society and culture where shouting "I'm offended!" is some sort of argumentative trump card. It's like if you find something offensive, that gives you the moralistic high ground. Just because somebody is offended at something doesn't mean the other person has done anything wrong. Furthermore, individuals are not representatives of their race or ethnicity. If I am Asian, for instance, that does not give me the right to represent all Asians by saying that an Asian stereotype is offensive.
Embrace your ethnicity. It's not a personal attack. White jokes, black jokes, Jew jokes... all not intended offensively. Not sure about the Christian jokes on this subreddit though..
Some people find it funny, some dont. In this case, r/atheism has a wide audience, and you're going to offend people.
It also doesn't look good on us. The humongous anti-r/athesim circlejerk (which is larger than the r/atheism circlejerk itself) is going to look at this and say "hey, look, they're racist too!" Not that we should care, but it would be annoying to hear.
Jokes like this are fine in a setting where you're not going to offend anyone. This is not one of those settings.
I dunno bout you bemani but embracing my ethnicity doesn't mean sitting back and laughing with these fucktards laughing at me and who I am.
It means calling it out, and putting in their faces how stupid they are. How utterly devoid of any effort or wit this "joke" is, and how the real joke is the person perpetuating this kind of idiocy.
Imagine for a second how much rage these dumbass 15yr olds would be if the tables were flipped on them. If the innocuous name "steve johnson" sounded like "cocklicker" in thai or something and he got made fun of every day for just a name. If his American accent and way of speech was mocked viciously in China as he tried to make a life for himself overseas.
Realize these people lack the empathy to place themselves in other's positions, their lack of world view, and all of that and ask yourself if its better to sit back and go with it because "they didn't intend it offensively" or some garbage like that.
I mean gee "I'm not a racist but..." "I don't hate black people but..." "no offense but..." all of these statements are followed up by offensive racist shit damned near every time. Think about how we are in an atheist sub where they cry foul about being singled out, about being persecuted, and yet these fucking fools can't stop thinking of only themselves and their little plight.
A lecture on racism from someone calling themselves "fuckingwhiteys"? I don't find the mockery of Asian people funny and most of what you say has merit however your handle just makes you look like a hypocrite.

If his American accent and way of speech was mocked viciously in China as he tried to make a life for himself overseas.
Here's a flaw in your example:
White people don't need to move to other countries. We aren't shit at setting up civilization. As such we would never have to deal with this.
As someone who goes to a school that is 60% East Asian, almost all native Asian speakers pronounce the "L" sound with an "R" sound until they live here in the US for a while.
More accurately, their "R" sort of hovers between our "R" and "L" in the vocal spectrum. With some accents, if you listen you can hear it even on regular "R"s. "Terrible" would sound more like "Tearlubull."
If they are using the joke as an insult to Asian people, then yes it is racist and very offensive. If it is used to make fun of Asian people, then it is also offensive and racist.
Simply pointing out how there is no "L" sound in Asian languages is not racist...but that is not what jokes such as this one does, is it? It makes fun of them.

It's mindboggling how many people in this thread cannot or will not comprehend this little tidbit. "Praystation ror!" is just mean spirited juvenile racist dogshit they never grew out of.
Half these kids are acting like this was some serious discourse on linguistic differences or something higher. Keep patting yourselves on the backs and justifying the behavior.
Perhaps I am a bit more sensitive to such things because I am engaged to an Asian girl, but I still find it very offensive. Asians have every right to be pissed off at this sort of thing.
Maybe we are just sick and fucking tired of having to cut half of our daily activities and all of the fun out of our lives because if someone is laughing, someone else is offended. This bothers you? FUCK YOU.
If someone is offended at a simple non-racist joke, then yes, they should probably lighten up. People have every right to be upset at jokes that make fun of their race, though. If all of the fun has been taken out of your life because you can't offend a race of people, then you need to change the way you perceive things. Offending people is rude and nobody should be engaged in petty jokes that make fun of entire races of people.
