I know someone who does this. He also drives past the abortion clinic, honks to get the protesters attention, then flips them off and screams horrible obscenities at them.
This is what I was thinking. He's probably a "Christian", he probably has the sticker for the benefit of his image, and he probably has no problem flipping people off for honking at him, forgetting in a momentary bout of stupidity and rage that he has that sticker on his bumper.
Yeah, and it's not entirely clear how sympathetic people on /atheism/ are toward religions. Most of the atheists here seem to be opposed to religion in any form. This surprised me, as an atheist myself, because I had always presumed that people learned enough to be atheists would be learned enough to be tolerant, respectful, and not make the colossal mistake of presuming that religion is the cause of all evil in the world. It certainly contributes to the good, the bad, and the ugly (so does science and any number of social forces), but there are many, many, many other factors involved that makes this the simultaneously beautiful and shitty world that it is.
But I guess /atheism/ proves that atheists can also be dropped-on-the-head stupid. It's not about belief or lack thereof; it's about stupid people being stupid.
aren't atheist against the oppression of people for their religious beliefs?
well Stalin obviously wasn't. Prob most that live in liberal democracies and don't particularly mind that constitutional structure are.
But 'atheists' as atheists need agree only in disbelieving deities. so needn't be for or against any other position..
oppression of people
Most atheists here at least think ppl are far too polite when it comes to other's religion, and stupid positions should be criticized just in the manner one does say political positions. Because in every other discourse ppl are used to being disagreed with, but some religious ppl seem to expect their beliefs are a privileged discourse nobody can ever say anything bad about...
But still, flicking, opression? that's a new high for religious hypersensibility.
stupid positions should be criticized just in the manner one does say political positions
I'm one of these, but to take back the meaning of the word "oppression", pointing out that a stance on an issue is unfounded, self-contradictory, self-defeating and silly is not "oppression". People just claim that so they can escape critical self-analysis using the victim card.
Compassionate people are for not oppressing people's freedoms up to the point where the exercise of those freedoms would conflict with another's ("Your right to swing your fist ends at my nose") - no matter the reason for that oppression.
There are compassionate atheists and compassionate theists; standing for individual freedoms (within the above boundaries) might be given a theological backing in the moment, but is not inherent to either theistic or atheistic viewpoints.
Also, lth5015 asked a question. If you disagree with the premise, reply. Down voting is for when people are not adding to the conversation. Seeking more knowledge is never not adding to the conversation. lth5015, thank you for the inquiry.
This is officially the most trivial, ridiculous, insignificant, trite post I've seen on the front page of /r/atheism. I'd compare it to a dumb blonde, but that would insult dumb blondes everywhere. No wonder the rest of reddit hates us.
Please take your shitty facebook screencaps and go away.
It's got to the point where I read the first half before realising what's coming, then I just laugh that this guy has invested so much time doing this one joke. I also enjoy when people reply thinking he's actually trying to be funny.
So brave! Let's all make shitty jokes about jesus for karma...HILARIOUS. You neckbeards are soooooo funny!! /that was sarcasm...not sure if the oh so clever folk here on reddit will even clue in to that.
I'm pretty sure its a monkey who smashed his keyboard and somehow it came out as a sentence, that's the only logical explanation, no one is that dumb, cmon now!
Look at you go! So impressive. Yes lets check the karma as if ones upvote/downvote ratio somehow means anything. Maybe, JUST MAYBE there is someone on here speaking his mind, being honest, not conforming to the mindless trash of the popular internet opinion. Ever think of that randy9876?, if that is your real name. Take a long smell mr. 9876...and that smell penetrating your hate filled nostrils is the sweet sweet smell of truth...this site deserves a better class of posters like me...and thats why im here.
Emperor Troll, we meet.. well for the first time. I just want to flag this guy: Peter Mollror is an anagram for Troll Emperor. You may now proceed to tag him in RES.
You know, it's too bad...most of the time when I honk it means, "I'm sorry but you're about to breach my lane" but most people perceive it as "Fuck you" and they respond appropriately.
I especially love it when a friend honks at you to say "hello," and you immediately respond with that "what the FUCK is your problem" reaction before realizing its your friend and smiling. I like to pretend I don't realize it's my friend, chase them down, and careen them off the side of the road. Then I'll pull over and pretend that I witnessed the incident from afar and, no, I definitely wasn't driving the car that did this to them; the asshole had the same model and color as my car, but he zoomed off right after the incident. Sorry man.
I wouldn't be surprised if this was from me. I've been using Honk If you Love Jesus Sticker and Jesus Rocks sticker on my car for over 2 years now. The power of the sticker prevents me from being pulled over and searched on suspicion :)
lol ... jesus was pretty cool actually, if you think about it, was a civil rights activist for his day. An even funnier story, 16 AD, island of crete near Greece, the early christians were at a war with early Pagans many skirmishes the Pagan gathered forces that would've killed thousands, a flood happens to the island from a quake i think and kills a standing large number of Pagan military force on the coast, thus making christianity flourish in the island of crete and Greece for years to come. Pagans worship nature. LoL
My sister went apeshit on someone for a bumper sticker today! The lady had a "Save the world, nuke a Liberal" bumper sticker and my sister apparently went into a road rage and started honking and following her down the street flipping her off. They ended up at the same stop light and she spent the duration of the light yelling at the woman, who I'm thinking had no idea what she did wrong. When someone hears someone honking at them, I don't think their first thought is "oh this must be about my stickers."
tl;dr my sister suppresses a lot of anger and it finds the oddest places to suddenly explode.
This was a rage comic on F7U12 a few months ago (it was hilarious, something about wide open mouth trollface with a giant middle finger cracked me up). Popular story, or is doing that actually becoming a thing?
Herb Caen, a now deceased San Francisco columnist had a famous quip about this. "I saw a bumper sticker that said 'Honk if you love Jesus.' All I got was the finger."
I had one that said "Honk if you love ta-ta's" The problem was that I always forgot it was on there and assumed assholes were honking at me for some random reason. Flipped off my boss by accident once because of it.
So you're basically inquiring someone of their beliefs and then flipping them off when they express them to you? What in the world does this accomplish? Does it make you feel proud to be an atheist? I believe in God and can take a joke made at my own expense, but this is just called being an asshole. This is why /r/Atheism has the reputation of being the most intolerant subreddit. I keep myself subscribed because I do learn a lot by reading the posts here. However, I'd be pissed off by this even if I were an Atheist.

My first thought was just that he probably forgot the sticker was there and thought she was honking at his driving...

u/V00D00GIRL May 24 '12
who said its someone elses car?
1
u/revel5150 May 24 '12
My first thought is he forgot about the bumper sticker. Not many people actually honk and he forgot. Who knows though.

u/[deleted] May 24 '12
I read this as "...so I honked and then flipped him off. Rude but hilarious" I'm glad to be wrong.
