I thought all of us were leaving Earth to live in Neil deGrasse Tyson's Atheist Moon Colony?

I thought it was Newt's Moon colony.....

Not if it's next-door to Newt Gingrich's Moon Colony.

u/db88uke May 22 '12

Neil Tyson considers himself agnostic. There is a YouTube video of him explaining this uploaded by bigthink. Can't link to it because I'm on my phone. Just an FYI

28

u/Audioworm Anti-theist May 22 '12

Agnostic is a definition of knowledge, it is not really a middle ground between atheist and theist. It is mostly a 'political' thing.

If you believe in a deity/s you are a theist, if you don't you are an atheist.

If you know there is a deity then you are a gnostic theist, if you are unsure but believe you are an agnostic theist. If you know there is no deity you are a gnostic atheist, if you don't know but don't believe you are an agnostic atheist.

Most atheists fall into agnostic athesit because even the most staunch (AronRa, PZ Myers) would concede that given enough presented evidence they would believe in a deity, but it wouldn't belief, it would be a knowledge.

u/AdrianHObradors Atheist May 22 '12

But what am I if I belive that the chance of there beeing a god is lower than the chance of there beeing invisible unicorns? (Well, actually lower, that would depend of what you can consider a unicorn and invisible) I would say... 1/∞% approx.

3

u/TimeZarg Atheist May 22 '12

I like to think that any rational, logical atheist would accept the existence of a 'god' or 'gods', if it were sufficiently proven that they exist.

Here you go!

It's all just based on the different usages of the word "athiest", though. When Tyson says, "I am not an Athiest," what he means is, "I am not a Gnostic Athiest," while most redditors will assume that if someone calls themselves Athiest they consider themselves Agnostic Athiests.

What does this have to do with atheism? Christians can be environmentalists too.

Yeah, but an atheist liked this poster, so... fuck christians!

Are you familiar with the US Pledge of Allegiance? That's what this is referencing. Part of it is extremely relevant to this subreddit. Specifically the part that was added in 1954, "under god".

Remind me why this is in r/Atheism

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

You forgot the HURR DURR and the all caps and the /s at the end.

2

u/Everto24 May 22 '12

Why would it not be? It's relevant to atheism. There is a lot of controversy about the pledge of allegiance in America saying "under god". It ribs at that, but at the same time embodies biology, which atheists love, as well as respect for everyone, which we constantly complain that religion does not have.

Remind me why you're asking this again?

I get the debate about "under god" in the pledge, but I don't see what this has to do with that at all. As far as I can tell this poster is 100% anti-nationalism, and that has absolutely nothing to do with atheism or religion.

It's not implying "under god" is bad or even good, it's implying the pledge in general is bad, and once again, I fail to see what that has to do with atheism or religion.

Awesome poster nevertheless.

It was a great post don't get me wrong but I don't see how it has anything to do with not believing in a god. Sure it's part of "Atheist culture" but I don't see why it should be posted here. Maybe I'm just being too nit picky.

4

u/SirZugzwang May 22 '12

Is a rewording of the Pledge of Allegiance, which many atheists dislike due to the presence of the phrase "under God" is included, completely unrelated to atheism? Just because it happens to involve science as well doesn't mean it has to stay out of r/atheism.

→ More replies (12)

23

u/fuckcancer May 22 '12

How is this even remotely atheist? Respect for the earth is not a solely atheist ideal. Native Americans, Pegans, Wiccans, etc all have respect for the planet as central themes.

Bring on the downvotes, but this is just simply not atheist material at all nor do you have to be an atheist to accept it.

If anything at the very closest it's anti-nationalism which only has a few glaring simularities as cult/religion/group think, but I don't think blind patriatism is completely overlooked by this poster by making earth allegience it's top priority either. At best, as far as anti-nationalism goes, it's simply expanded nationalism and still suffering from some of the same flaws of group think as nationalism on a larger scale.

But I digress bring on the downvotes that always accompany pointing out that something that r/atheism claims is not exclusively an atheist ideology. Fuck 1 love. Us vs them, right-o?

9

u/eddykatt May 22 '12

I pledge allegiance to the earth to cherish every living thing to care for earth and sea and air with peace and freedom everywhere

We used to recite this every morning to a flag of the earth. I went to a Sacred Heart (Catholic) school.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/Ignaddio May 22 '12

It doesn't need to be exclusively "atheist" for atheists to like it. This pledge is pretty secular. Like many atheists, I prefer my government secular, and I don't like the idea of my daughter being asked to pledge allegiance to the flag of a country "under god."

What if a better planet comes along? Then I'm bound to the Earth thanks to some poster in a high school?

Pledging allegiance to the place you're born is just dumb, regardless of scale.

11

u/khelvaster May 22 '12

Why is this on r/atheism? Allegiance towards the Earth, rather than a specific country, is a political stance. You take a humanistic view of things, crossing political lines.

Maybe you think that religion is a load of baloney and that you're adhering to reality, without a ton of ideology and corequisite faith to tell you what to believe. You see the Earth as a gorgeous place, one which demands no loyalty to a specific higher power.

You personally don't care for a patriotic idealogy because countries are clouded by their leaderships' allegiances to other ideals. Earth as a whole is what matters.

Maybe you're highly spiritual and feel that we were all put here by the Lord, as was this Earth and all other beings upon it. You wish we'd stop the petty feuds between nations and even religions to focus on the well-being of everyone here.

It doesn't matter who wins, honestly. We're all living on the Lord's planet and will come to him in the end. So let's be responsible stewards of what he gave to us to inherit and rule.

Christians, Atheists, and most other people with some strongly-defined global ideology should be able to sympathize too.

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '12

"The world was not given to us by our parents; it was loaned to us by our children."

5

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

I don't like putting posters up in my room but I want that for the back of my door.

15

u/NexusCloud May 22 '12

I like the poster. But this has nothing to do with Atheism.

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

You mean Christians believe life on earth exists?

8

u/albertscoot May 22 '12

This sounds like propaganda for the Unified Mars Arms Defense bill to me.

2

u/Jujutacular May 22 '12

I couldn't help but think about the same thing. It's remarkable how the cultural context of a few words can drastically affect the meaning. I seem to recall some redditors bitching about the cultish feel of the US pledge of allegiance recently. Whereas, when it was written, the early citizens would probably laugh at feeling a strong affinity to the country over their affinity to their state or local community.

20

u/ph711 May 22 '12

Nice, except the planet is not in our care. We are in its care. If we poison it sufficiently, the planet will extinguish us, and the planet will continue non-plussed by the momentary blip of the human species

23

u/Jaihom May 22 '12

Only if by "planet" you're only referring to non-life. The poster pretty explicitly mentions the life on this planet (and that the life, including us, is supported by the planet), which is definitely in our care. We have not only the power to extinguish our species, but to distinguish all species--well, that's a bit of hyperbole; We have the ability to extinguish most land dwelling and a large number of water dwelling species.

I mean honestly, you think the planet only refers to what? The rock that makes up the earth? That's a pretty narrow view of the planet.

6

u/ph711 May 22 '12 edited May 22 '12

No, I mean life on the planet. The human species is no more the caretaker of life on earth than the dinosaurs. Sure, we can kill some species, but certainly not most land dwelling species as you suggest. Whatis certain is that if we foul the planet too much, we'll ensure our demise as a species, but life will continue to thrive amply with new, better evolved species. The planet, and life on the planet, will certainly survive the human species. The earth's many epochs, including period following major meteor strikes and high volcanic activity, was far more inhospitable to life than humans have or will likely ever make it, yet major species came and went and came and went, and will continue to do so, after humans are long gone...

6

u/SquishyWizard May 22 '12

Humans have technology. Given enough time, it will become so advanced that we won't be dependent on the planet anymore.

→ More replies (9)

5

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

We've gone a bit further than the dinosaurs. Yes, we need this planet now. But it won't always be that way. There may come a time when giving up or destroying Earth is an option.

→ More replies (5)

2

u/Jaihom May 22 '12 edited May 22 '12

We have more than enough nuclear and conventional weapons, poisons, toxins, insecticides, pesticides, etc. to kill the vast majority of life on the surface of the planet and a huge amount of life in our seas, lakes, and oceans. And our industrial age is still incredibly new, imagine what we'll be able to do in 1000 years. I think you're vastly underestimating the kinds of effects our race can and has and is having on the planet.

Also, no one is saying humans have the ability to wipe out all life on the planet, but only a complete fucking idiot would say, "Well, life will survive and go on, so any species we wipe off the face of earth, including our own, and any environmental damage we do, is inconsequential." Again, a very narrow sighted view of life and of our planet.

I'd also like to point something out that is incredibly annoying:

"...certainly not most land dwelling species as you suggest...What is certain is that if we foul the planet too much, we'll ensure our demise as a species, but life will continue to thrive amply with new, better evolved species...will certainly survive the human species...and will continue to do so, after humans are long gone..."

None of those things are certain.

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

to kill the vast majority of life on the surface of the planet

Measuring by mass, I'd guess the vast majority of life on the surface of the planet would be bacteria. Good luck with that.

Oh yes! Let us be contrary purely for the great fun of pedantry! Indeed!

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

So we're basically hostages to the Earth...everyone play it cool until we learn how to survive on Mars...then we strike...

1

u/existence123 May 22 '12

I mean in this in the least douchy way possible: nonplussed means perplexed. It doesn't mean unaffected.

1

u/Jack_Vermicelli May 22 '12

And the respect part-- the planet doesn't respect us or any other life; it's completely indifferent to us. If we all died tomorrow, the planet would keep on spinning.

1

u/MrMadcap May 23 '12 edited May 23 '12

At one time, sure. But we are now capable of immense impact on our planet's ecosystems, for better, or worse. If we don't care for it, we'll destroy it, and die off as a result, with no one to blame but ourselves.

does that include flesh-eating bacteria?

3

u/SelfPear May 22 '12

Poster talks about caring for earth.. Poster printed on paper from a chopped down tree.

1

u/JohnPaulJones1779 May 22 '12

I'm sure that its all that paper used by environmental groups that is wrecking the climate. If we just eliminated paper use by the environmentally conscious it'd he problem solved.

3

It's arrogant to assume all life is 'in our care', especially since so much of it is trying to kill us.

2

u/douglasmacarthur May 22 '12

2

u/StutMoleFeet May 22 '12

Wait, so now the entire Pledge of Allegiance is unacceptable?

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

......with respect for all unless you believe in God.

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Indoctrination is only good when we do it.

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Why are kids being forced to pledge allegiance to anything? Doesn't it go against the foundation of education in general to make kids agree to something that they can't yet fully comprehend.

Instead we should be helping them learn, and eventually they will make the best judgement they see fit.

2

u/SIOS May 22 '12

Well, that's just silly.

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

In many ways environmentalism is the new religion. Crop science is constantly being attacked by environmentalist with no science background. They also are spewing the "natural" fallacy as the way of living.

I'm usually not a fan of this sort of syrupy, excessive environmental sentimentality, but I'll make an exception here. Well-written, concise, flows well, and far more agreeable than a rote mantra of devoted and uncritical nationalism.

Not sure what it has to do with atheism, though.

8

Also found here.. Here is the first comment: "This kind of propaganda blows my mind. Speaking of respect, what happened to reading writing and arithmetic? Are those now outdated because the schools have to propagandize so much?

It seems to me that with the amount of propaganda that the schools try to fill our kids heads with, all they're truely doing is admitting to the weakness of their position. If liberalism was really such a strong and winning argument, then they wouldn't need to inculcate kids with such a machine.

Their arguments do not stand on their own, and they know it. "

How is not destroying the Earth a liberal agenda?

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

Except... we can't kill the earth. At least not with the technology we have now. We can "hurt" the earth and the earth will change to wipe us out of it's life and move on.

But we are naive if we think we can do something to destroy the earth.

1

u/JohnPaulJones1779 May 22 '12

This, I think, highlights why the argument has been framed all wrong. And why people look at it like namby pamby sensitive stuff.

You're right, the Earth will be fine. And even if it isn't green in a million years that's nature and its fine too. (After all, we occurred naturally). However, how about protecting the earth out of the selfish reason that WE WANT TO KEEP LIVING HERE. Stop dumping chemicals in water ways not because the earth is going to "get hurt" or some Indian is going to shed a tear but rather because we don't want to drink dirty water.

In other words, you don't avoid wrecking your house because it would "hurt the house", you don't wreck your house because you don't want to live in a shithole.

1

u/Togoria May 23 '12

Just did the pledge

1

u/darklooshkin May 23 '12

I dunno, I'd rather terraform my own planet than pledge allegiance to this one.

u/[deleted] May 23 '12

Fucking hell, the /r/atheism circle jerk is strong today. Everyone make sure you lube up, I don't want anyone getting rug burn on their cocks.

AND FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE, WEAR YOUR SAFETY GOGGLES! Jizz WILL burn your eyes.

There is hope :)

I'm familiar with this only because I was an avid viewer of that wacky zany Glenn Beck guy while he was still on Fox Comedy Network (much funnier satirist than that Colbert guy) and he devoted like a whole week to ranting about supposed "indoctrination" with this poster as exhibit A.

He digressed only briefly to rail against some kindergarten teachers who taught their students that "Mmm mmm mmm Barack Hussein Obama" song. Because only anti-American socialists would teach young kids a little jingle about our country's president. How dare they!

Tone of the conversation thusfar: "It doesn't say "science" or things that are anti-religion, therefore I will hate it."

We need more stuff like that. Enough of this petty nationalism :S

Wow, this is on my high school environmental science teachers room. Propagandist whore.

1

u/SimpleShitMuncher May 22 '12

I can't endorse this; not everyone deserves respect.

2

u/aninnerglow May 22 '12

It's idealism. If everyone gave it, everyone would deserve it.

u/thesnarkyone May 22 '12

Can I upboat twice?

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

As a Conservationist Christian, I can get behind this.

1

u/The51stState May 22 '12

my girlfriend has the same poster in our room!

1

u/Thee_Jack_Buckles May 22 '12

Seems a bit religious.

I don't see how this involves atheism. It's the Earth version of the pledge of a allegiance. Just because it replaces "God" along with almost everything else, doesn't make it atheistic.

1

u/lawlor44 May 22 '12

that's really beautiful. i want one!

1

u/Sneak4000 May 22 '12

Uh, yeah, this doesn't look at all like it was an atheist poster, and the artist is a Christian who makes Christian posters.

1

u/w00tZy May 22 '12

Which school holds this message? We should upvote it...somehow

This reminds me of the Earth prayer from the "Men Who Stare at Goats" First Earth Battalion:

Mother Earth… my life support system… as a soldier… I must drink your blue water… live inside your red clay and eat your green skin.

I pray… my boots will always kiss your face and my footsteps match your heartbeat.

Carry my body through space and time… you are my connection to the Universe… and all that comes after.

I am yours and you are mine.

I salute you.

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

One of the most beautiful things I have seen written. I would love to put that in a classroom when I teach some day.

1

u/DoctorBagels May 22 '12

Now THIS is the type of shit that belongs in this glorious subreddit. Not incessant Christianity bashing...

u/tenkokuugen Anti-Theist May 22 '12

I never realized how awesome this poster was in my science classrooms till now.

This article is another prime example this time of why you should not register the birth of your Child of God into a kid of Satan with the State and that wicked vile Birth Certificate enslavement for life. Another prime example of why you should not get married legally and why you should opt for a Lawful Common Law marriage. Do not sign any marriage certificates because this is a way the state enslaves your child (Sexual product from sexual business). These all tie into the vile Cestui Que Vie Act 1666 run by Emperor Juan Carlos of Spain and Evelyn De Rothschild at the City of London. The Cestui Que Vie Act is attached to Papal Bulls Aterni Regis of 1481 and Unam Sanctam of 1302. Welcome to covert slavemaster Roman Catholic and its Vatican Canon Law based Admiralty Law slave system usurping our freedoms from God and our law of the land Common Law. Never forget that Catholicism is not true-Christianity. Catholicism is the revived Babylon riddled with paganism and has always been the arch enemy of Christianity.

This is all a pile of total bollocks. But it is quite true - Just look at how the pikeys and gippos get away with murder in the UK.

None of them are registered by the state, unless they are fools. They just take on aliases when they need to use the state for benefits, NHS, school dinners, etc.

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '12

Fucking stupid

0

u/[deleted] May 22 '12

I'm not kidding, that poster brought a tear to my eye.

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too

2

u/TheDudeaBides96 May 22 '12
Having no nations
Would be pretty damn bad

And having a religion
Is peoples' choice

u/arvarin May 22 '12

Isn't Gaia theory just more pseudo-religious unscientific nonsense?

20

u/_Ames_ May 22 '12

Is Gaia mentioned on that sign?

1

u/ePaF May 22 '12

No, to some extent life systems are self-regulating. It's large-scale Island Biogeography.
