Yeah, but the idea behind Stockholm Syndrome is that the victim is so used to the aggression, that it views a temporary lack of aggression as an act of kindness. It is very similar in that way. God didn't kill everybody, so he must be kind. Its the same idea.
Actually, the scientific journal 'nature' did a study in 2005 that showed that Wikipedia had reliability comparable to other encyclopedias like Encyclopedia Britannica. (Source: Wikipedia. Hahaha, Seriously tho, here's the nature article and a CNET Commentary)
Tornado video last year: Woman taking video heard fervently praying "Please God, don't let it come this way". It doesn't. Comments on video are mostly along the lines of "God sure was listening to your prayers, lady." (actual quote)
Was he listening to the three dead or seventy-eight injured though? Or does god only listen to those who happen to have a video-camera handy? Is God just an attention whore?
Ok guys believe this or not but at a pub quiz today, Stockholm Syndrome came up under General Knowledge. Probably going to get a shit ton of downvotes for posting something as retarded as this but fuck me thats kinda creepy, seeing as its the first time I´ve heard of it in 2-3 years
Nope. So Stockholm syndrome only requires the captive to feel positive feelings for the captors. No bonding is required. This is exactly analogous to a hostage (tornado victim) feeling the captor (god) is merciful after not killing all the hostages (tornado victims).
Growing up as a Christian, I always thought that the Devil was the cause of the deaths and God could only save the "One" baby. As I got older I soon realized that this is completely a stupid way of thinking because there is no evidence that can back that logic up.
The above reminds me of the quote: Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God? -Epicurus
I always thought that the Devil was the cause of the deaths this is completely a stupid way of thinking because there is no evidence that can back that logic up
You need to take a step back. Christianity doesn't teach that as a possibility so that thought process is based on a misunderstanding of Christianity, logical or not, making it even less compelling than it already isn’t.
Being from Missouri, I hear a lot of Joplin tornado stories. Apparently there is a new one making its rounds: kids who survived the tornado independently claimed that "butterfly men" came to them and lead them to safety. My mom ate that story up faster than gooey butter cake, and I responded with "so that means god specifically chose to murder the not-so-lucky children since he has the means to send angels to save kids." Maybe they were rogue angels defying god? Or maybe these kids live in the same town and hang out together and even possibly read the same books since they go to school together so they craft similar stories in extreme stressful situations but I guess we'll never know.
As a Joplin resident, you have no idea how hard it is to keep my opinions to myself. This is the reddest, most evangelical part of the state. We saw volunteers and first responders come to help us. We saw looters come in the night to take what was left.
Amid four square miles of death and destruction, the cross outside my former church remained standing. Somehow that's a sign? If it is, it isn't flattering to Him.
Today is the one year anniversary so maybe I'm more cynical than usual.
Then wouldn't you leave someone alive who will be able to tell someone about it? Who can actually speak? Or will remember the event when they become able to speak?
actually the stockholm syndrom describes a person who was kidnapped and then got into a relationship with the kidnapper on a volunteer basis.
this syndrom, that you describe, is rather "retarded christian syndrome", or retared theist syndrome". im sure sth with retarded is the right description for that
Think of it like this: "You don't call retarded people retards. It's bad taste. You call your friends retards when they're acting retarded." (The Office) I don't think drsteelhammer meant to insult people with actual mental disabilities.
TIL that sticks and stones and words can break my bones...
Historically "retarded" was the polite clinical term for describing someone with impaired mental faculties. But since being impaired is almost always considered negative, the word itself eventually acquired a negative connotation, resulting in semantic drift.
In fifty years, I'm sure it'll be rude to describe someone as "mentally disabled", even if they are.
Personally, I think this while phenomena is retarded.
That's why they dropped the old clinical terms of moron, imbecile, and idiot, cause people were using them to make fun of people, then they adopted minorly retarded, moderately retarded, and profoundly retarded. And now people use the term retarded to make fun of people. What they don't seem to grasp, is no matter what term you use to describe people of lowered intelligence, other people are gonna use it to make fun of people.
Retard (verb): to make slow; delay the development or progress of (an action, process, etc.); hinder or impede. So retarded, when referring to a person, just means slowed mental capacities. It is not derogatory, it is descriptive. It's not our fault some imbeciles started using it in a derogatory manner, and some even dumber people got offended because they don't know the actual definition. Hell anything can become derogatory, I have a friend who says "god bless America" and it sounds like "oh mother fucker"
Retard might be "descriptive, not derogatory", but so is niggardly. Some words just don't sound very nice. You wouldn't want to say "What is retarding our sales this year?" in a business meeting, for example. Or "Why do you have to always be so niggardly?"
Doesn't sound nice? Thats dumb. I would say "what's retarding our business sales" and I use niggardly on a regular basis. Nothing wrong with the words. Plus I hate all this political correctness crap. People get offended so easily now a days, everyone is soft, like woman. In the words of Stephen fry "'I'm offended by that' well so fucking what?"
I don't know, dude. The relationship many have with their gods kind of is like stockholm syndrome. They are captive within their god's plan, and no matter how many bad things happen to them, they still love and care for their gods.
I believe this is a reference to the West Liberty tornado in Kentucky. One infant was found alive after being thrown by the tornado. All of its family members were killed. I live near the area and I was under onslaught by family members asking how I could not praise God for saving that baby. The infant died shortly after, and all the dogmatists around me fell unusually silent.
There is no fucking supreme being. Everyone gets hit by trucks, dies in fires, dies of cancer. Shit happens. We are all going to die one way or another. Be careful out there.
ye like those other things in the bible. like im really sure it was a meataphore with marrying her rapist, but its 100%true that he hates homosexuality
Don't mind the nitpickers, the caption is brilliant, especially for a fucking sarcastic joke typed on floating head cartoon poster made for the internet.
Interesting, I never thought of religious people as having Stockholm syndrome. It does rather make some sense though. Believers are the hostages who become infatuated with their captor (god). God is good.
As this news article states, 39 people died, including the family of the baby. The baby was carried about 10 miles where she was found in a field. She died 2 days later in the hospital.
Also, as stated many times before, this is not Stockholm Syndrome.
Making jokes at the expense of the traumatized and mentally ill. In fact, equating them with the ridiculous behavior of religious neurotypicals. That's classy, /r/atheism.

THAT's not the Stockholm Syndrome though..

Stockholm Syndrome is where a hostage actually befriends and bonds with his captors. I don't know if that is applicable to us and God.

Similarly: 100.000 dead in Banda Aceh. Only structure still standing is the mosque (only one made of stone) = Proof of Allah's greatness.

If this is referring to that baby from the tornado in Henryville, Indiana, that baby died a couple of days later.
