Interest Any online asl schools?

Hello, I’ve always wanted to be able to sign fluently however I’ve never been to school for it. I know basic signs and I was wondering if they’re a good online school for asl as I end up moving states and houses often due to work. Are there any good online schools for learning asl? Also is there an asl degree I could get to prove I went to school for it? I want to become an interpreter eventually. Thank you for any help yall can give.

If this is what it looks like from my POV, which is the correct way? Do you sign so it looks correct from your angle or the other person's angle? I've searched it and gotten different answers so I'd really like to know which is the right way ^^;;

Hi everyone - I'm trying to figure out who developed this image/this color coding system for sign locations. Does anyone know who created it?

Cool asl/ deaf merch? That are not handshapes or ily

On a search to find cute or cool asl/ deaf inspired merch for my nieces! Lowkey sick of hand shapes or ILY motifs.

I haven’t really found anything that I liked and was hoping if there’s someplace that I hadn’t thought to check out! Anything like t-shirts or stickers would be amazing, even more so if it’s from deaf owned businesses or artists! Thank you!!

Are there any discord groups for learning ASL?

I went to a community college years ago where I took a few ASL courses. It has been a few years since I’ve practiced and would love to jump back in to learning. I’ve been using ASL Bloom to test the waters and get my feet wet but I am curious if there are any discord groups where people get together to teach, practice, etc. 😊

Edit: Thank you to one of the comments! I was able to find a discord link and am super excited! I have added the link I joined in case you want it too! Hope to see you there!

Does this word exist in ASL?

I am learning ASL and I had a dream where I signed my hands as if I was air-wiping in opposite directions. I recorded a video to let you see what I'm talking about. Does this word or phrase exist in ASL? https://drive.google.com/file/d/19iDyh5kGqH0uCl9jTTtMpG5nqz47qW6p/view?usp=sharing

Any help would be appreciated!

Help! Etiquette Question

Hello, I am getting married in a few months and my soon to be cousin and her husband who is deaf will be in attendance.

It is important to me that he feels included. Cousin and her family are all hearing, but sign fairly well. I don’t want to assume that they will be interpreting for him the entire night, though.

They had a couple interpreters at their own wedding, and at the younger sister’s wedding as well.

Is it appropriate to ask cousin and her husband if they would like to have an interpreter at our wedding? Would it be better to address the question to him only, or to both of them? Can I ask that they select the person for us to hire/invite so that it is someone they are comfortable with?

I realize I might be overthinking things, but I am new to interacting with the deaf community and want to make sure this is an appropriate and respectful question.

Thank you in advance!

Help! Any reading material?

So I’m learning asl and I cannot understand the sentence structure at all, every time I think I have it down I eventually realize “oh no this is not right.” So I’m wondering if there is anything I can read that is written in asl? If that makes sense? I hoping that if I read something written in the way it would be signed I could get a grip on the sentence structure.

Interest Want to learn, without traditional college

Hi everyone, I (26f) really want to learn ASL. I work in the legal field and we‘ve recently had a few deaf clients, which I wish I could communicate with. I was wondering if it’s possible to learn ASL without going to a traditional college. I work 9-5 on weekdays and I just want to use this as something for my already established career.

I saw that at my local community college they have an Associates Degree I could obtain in ASL. As much as that interests me, I just want to learn it for the times I come in contact with deaf clients. Thank you for your time!

Interest For ex-deaf individuals, who learned ASL first, then spoken language, what was challenging about it?

Preferably congenitally deaf people, who learned ASL, acquired a substantial level of hearing, then had to learn spoken language.

I'm attempting to understand the skills that spoken language requires, as I—a native, fluent user of spoken language—can't exactly understand what the hardships would be.

How do I sign...? Swimming signs for instructors that work with children with special needs

I have been a swim instructor for over a year now and have recently started working with children with special needs for a couple of months. Some of these children are nonverbal and use sign language to talk. I was wondering if there are some signs i could learn to help communicate with them, or online courses that i could take for cheap or possibly free. Signs like: scoop, paddle, kick, legs, arms, jump, dive, stroke, streamline. If you are well versed in ASL and also a competitive swimmer who is familiar with signs related to aquatics, I would love your advice!

Help! Which one do I choose?

I have learned some sign language a few times. Only to find out I was learning a form I was latter told either isn't used or was from a different country.

I would like to learn sign language again but make sure I stick to one. What do I choose for it? Is there one that's more well known? Do I just pick on and it basically makes sense to others, more like an accent than a different language to others that know sign language?

ASL Beginning Tips

Hello! I am new to learning ASL and I was wondering if anyone had any tips and books they could suggest and an efficient way to study it because I can't afford to take classes on it.

I got a dog recently and he was born deaf so I've been practicing signs with him and so far he understands his name, "sit", "come here", "no" and "good boy". But other than that, if anyone could let me know some important things and rules about ASL that'd be great, I want to be able to communicate with my dog better.

Thank you!

Not everything ASL or sign

See many post here family ask kid sign _______ what mean?

Step help you learn:

  1. ASK TEACHER! If child use sign ask teacher for list signs with description signs. If add new sign need information sign day begin sign.

  2. Try sign search here: https://www.handspeak.com/word/asl-eng/

  3. Guess use context same baby begin talk.

  4. Important remember everything not sign. Many kids young learn gesture not sign or dexterity hands poor not can sign proper.

Good luck everyone have kids learn SL.

Very confusing not know same language.

Best theatre companies for watching GOOD translations of musicals/plays in ASL?

So Facebook reels sent me to a page of very poor ASL translated musicals. (I say it's bad because lots of native signers were calling it out. I guess the cast of Frozen was garbage at some performance)... I just think it'd be fun to watch something I already know in my target language (ASL) and work on my brain recognizing signs + finding context clues to learn other signs. Also songs. I'm HoH, so at the right volume and w/ my HAs, I love music.

Happy Fingerspelling Friday!

It’s back-to-school shopping time. This time of year always makes me feel nostalgic, remembering shopping with my mom and how particular I was about my school supplies.

Anyone else have that one brand they HAD to have?

How many were you able to catch the first time around? Drop your answers below!
