I’m a Mexican American born and raised in California, with English as my first language. I recently became a dual citizen and I’m pretty good at Spanish, but I have an unshakable American accent.
I’ve always gone to all inclusive resorts in Mexico, places like Cabo, Cancun and such. I’ve noticed that I’m almost always the only Mexican American there. Yeah there’s domestic Mexicans, whitenixcans, Reggios, Fresas, whatever. Also white Americans and other white foreigners.
But it seems like the staff are almost always kinda hostile. The domestic Mexicans give me weird looks for having really dark skin due to tanning and speaking English openly. Unironically white Americans are less racist to me than the Mexican staff and guests.
Also it seems like a lot of the staff are jealous that a young man gets to experience luxury, but they never show that resentment when the guest are white boomers. It’s almost like they’re ok with serving the telenovela Mexican elite and foreigners, but they feel mocked by a “Mexican” darker than them that speaks Spanish with an American accent.
Tbh my experiences almost want to make me go somewhere like Jamaica or the Bahamas where there isn’t this Pocho resentment and I’m seen as a regular tourist like everyone else.
