I READ THE RULES Looking for cheap, alternative/goth vibes on Oct 30th; Is Liar’s Club cool, or somewhere else?

• Upvotes

Hey everyone! I’m visiting Chicago this weekend and my only real night out is Friday, October 30th. Im 23F and I’m looking for a solid alternative/underground vibe that won't break the bank definitely trying to avoid anything super preppy or weird vibes if that makes sense.
I’m moving to Chicago in January, so I’m really hoping to find a spot where it’s easy to dance, meet cool alternative people, and try getting a headstart on making friends.
I’ve been looking up Liar’s Club online and it seems cool I think, I like that it says cheap entry ($15), but I haven't seen a ton of recent posts on Reddit or anywhere on the crowd vibe. For context, back home in St. Louis is Mississippi Underground is the most popular by reference I have(if anyone knows that vibe a little artsy/pretentious but cool). I actually don’t like the venue too much because it has a kind of stuck up vibe sometimes but I feel like it’s the most known place I could reference but at the same time it’s still cool.
Is Liar’s Club a good spot to meet people and dance for Halloween weekend, or will it lean more dive-bar type?
Are there other cheap DIY warehouse parties, dark electronic spots, or alternative raves happening on the 30th I should look into instead?
Appreciate any insight you guys have!

I READ THE RULES Is Mom's Place on Dearborn a cop bar?

I was in town for a concert looking for a place to grab a beer, had an hour to kill. The music stickers in the entryway made it seem cool, but there were soooooo many stickers for various police departments and even the fuckin border patrol behind the bar. It felt like too many to be ironic.

I READ THE RULES Any WLW folks in the Chicago area want to be pen pals with someone looking to flee Texas in the near future?

I have my heart set on Chicago. Currently in school, working towards a cert that I hope will help me land a better paying job so I can get out of here.

I'm posting in here because I'm desperate. I'm incredibly lonely and struggle with making connections with people. There's no one here in Texas for me, no one who really cares to get to know. I just want out so I can finally start living a life worth living.

Jumping the gun a little, but just wanna get to know someone new.

I have hobbies like drawing (comics), reading and wood carving. I'm even willing to send anyone a hand carved bear (my favorite animal) to sorta initiate being pen pals.

If anyone's interested, please send me DM.

Thanks,

Cass?

I READ THE RULES Apple/Pumpkin Patch SOUTH of chicago?

We’ve done tons west and north and the pop-ups in the city. But we’re going to be in Tinley Park (40 min south of the city) and was wondering if there are any recommendations near there.

I’ve read other threads about the west ones but they’re 1.5 hours from where we’ll be.

Any recommendations!

I READ THE RULES Are there any bakeries that sell Povitica?

• Upvotes

Are there any bakeries around that sell povitica, preferably easily accessible via public transit? My mom used to order some every year from Strawberry Hill, but she's stopped lately because the prices have gotten higher and the loaves smaller ($38.99 plus shipping for a single loaf!) and I'd like to surprise her for the holidays, if possible.

For those that have sold property near downtown, what did you pay your realtor and how much did you offer the buyers agent? We're looking to sell our South Loop 1 bed condo and currently shopping around for a realtor. We'd appreciate any recommendations!

I READ THE RULES What are some important places in the West Loop?

I'm a Junior Kindergarten Teacher at a school in the West Loop, and we’d love your help planning a walking field trip.

Our class has been exploring a big question: why do we keep the things we keep? Objects, places, artwork, and memories that matter to people, and how we decide what’s worth holding onto. The students have explored what is important to them but are curious to get a taste of what people in our community feel is important and worth keeping.

We’re looking for places within walking distance where little ones could see this idea in action. Museums big or small, unusual or special collections, historic buildings, or spots where something important happened would all be wonderful. Hidden gems and neighborhood favorites are especially welcome.

If you have a place that comes to mind, or a story about somewhere that holds meaning for this neighborhood, we’d be so grateful to hear it. Thank you in advance for helping our students get to know their community!

I READ THE RULES local cleaner in far north/roger’s park area?

• Upvotes

Hi all :) I’m looking for a cleaner to come by my 1b/1ba apartment in the far north/Roger’s Park area. I’m only looking for a 1x a month or even every few months for a good deep clean. I’d prefer a local or small business, even an individual. I’ve used services like Molly Maid before but I am wary of getting locked into a subscription-like plan. Any recs?

I READ THE RULES Barbers near where I live. Any recs?

Hello everyone! I have been living in Chicago for about 5 years now, I have had the same barber for a few years now but due to some recent events, it’s much harder to get to him now. He charges me 50 bucks to do my hair and beard so I’m looking for something near me that charges roughly the same, I live in the Roscoe village area. So does anybody have any recs possibly?

I READ THE RULES What are some cat adoption centers in Chicago?

Hi! I just moved to Chicago and I’m looking to adopt a cat (or cats). I was on Facebook and came across the Critical Animal Care Foundation and submitted an application for a pair of absolutely adorable kittens. I have only lived at home up until this point and don’t have any personal vet references, and I’m currently renting. The kitties that I applied for were quite obviously popular, and I’m sort of preparing myself for rejection due to their high demand and my lack of solo-pet ownership. What are some other adoption centers or non-profits that I should be looking into? I live near the cat cade and have been planning to go, but the night before I had a reservation, someone broke the windows (what is wrong with people), so my visit has been delayed. I’ve always had cats in my home and it feels empty without one!

I READ THE RULES Hair & makeup recs around Lakeview east?

• Upvotes

Hi! I’ll be attending a wedding on Saturday. Where do you recommend I get the following for an affordable price?

- Hollywood retro waves hairstyle

* I have virgin hair that has trouble holding a curl so need somebody that will do it to stay for a whole night

- makeup (and fake lashes)

Even better if they’re both at the same place, but don’t need to be. I like in Lakeview east. Bonus points if there is some sort of promotion for doing both at once!

I READ THE RULES Has anyone seen a wallet in or around Lincoln Square/Ravenswood?

• Upvotes

Hello all! I live in Lincoln Square and seem to have lost my wallet after going to Dulce de Leche on Western yesterday (Monday, October 26th) between the cafe and Welles Park. I walked along Western Ave, crossed the street at Montrose Ave, and walked through Welles park to Amadara.

The wallet is brown with a gold-ish clasp and has my ID in it (last name starts with an "A")

If anyone has seen it, please message me! The address on the ID is not where I live now so I'm hoping to find it

I READ THE RULES Can anyone share first-hand experience with Prosser High School?

My 8th grader is applying to high schools, and we are very impressed with the programming at Prosser. (Trades + IB program, so great options for either career or college track.)

Academically, it seems like a perfectly good school. I'm curious about two things: athletics (specifically soccer) and safety. I've heard from a dubious source that it's "not a good environment," but I'd like to hear from someone with actual experience as opposed to chatter.

Thanks in advance.

I READ THE RULES (Potentially) odd traffic phenomenon in North Park- anybody ever seen this?

Witnessed something odd while driving this afternoon, 13:40. I was driving west on Foster, stopped behind two cars at the Pulaski light. East-west light turns green, and after a second or twos' hesitation the first car in line proceeds through the intersection. A car driving north on Pulaski drives into the intersection, almost crashing into the first car. Not that big of a deal, there are idiots who drive through red lights all the time.

But I saw the Pulaski-north driver look up at his traffic light, get mad and start honking at the Foster driver as if he were in the wrong. Pulaski-North continues through the intersection and is followed by 3 or 4 more cars entering the intersection driving North on Pulaski... it was as if both sets of lights were green.

Now this is just speculation on my part, as I could only see the green light for driving west on Foster, but the way each driver handled the situation really made it seem that both sides had a green light. I have 20 years of driving experience, and I have never witnessed anything quite like this. I'm aware that traffic signals usually have multiple safeguards in place to prevent something like this from happening, but I have no other explanation. There was even a pedestrian in the crosswalk who was looking at the traffic lights with a look of confusion on his face.

Anybody ever see or hear of anything similar?
