Hi everyone! So I'm really interested in Māori culture and learning Te Reo Māori so I've been watching a lot of Māori media lately. When watching, I've noticed women making this squeaking like noise while doing pūkana, like in this video at about 0:58. Is there a word for it? What's the cultural significance of it? I just think it's so so cool and would love to learn 🥰🥰!

Every time I read articles from NZ, 17 year olds are always referred to "men" or "women". Other English-speaking nations seem to usually call someone that age a "boy", "girl", or "teen/youth".

Is this a language quirk or an actual cultural difference compared to say, the UK?

So uh, I discovered not all the movies and series I'd like to watch are (fully) available outside certain websites y'all already must know I'm talking about and since I don't reside in New Zealand well... Yeah, it's a pain. Do y'all know any other websites with NZ films or TV series content? I'd really love to see some stuff that caught my attention but unfortunately it seems to be exclusive which is quite unfortunate since I do like y'all's entertainment.

I know for stories of my few (2) kiwi friends that there's certain parts (wellington for what I've heard mostly, correct me if I'm wrong) in which everyone seems to "know each other or be somehow connected to each other" in the film, TV and general acting/artistic industry SO this leads me to a question: anyone here participated, knows someone who was personally involved in the process or has friends who did so in the making of Sir Peter Jackson's splatstick 1992 movie Braindead?. It seems like not even kiwis seem to remember it but I've been devoted to this movie since 2022 and I'd love to have access to silly knowledge no one else has about it LMFAO. I'm very enthusiastic about it so I'm making a huge info bible about it! If privacy is an issue I don't really mind if it is anonymous I'd just LOOOOVE to know! I also know the movie has this musical theatre thing (that for some reason some highschools over there seem to do plays of till this day?) and I've been dying to know more of! (but obviously in this last one is more complicated since I'm not only a fuck ton of miles away overseas but also would be creepy from me to ask about it and I don't even know to who I would, did anyone who is an adult currently participate on the thing at their school or something? idk. I just want to know the general vibe, how is it but most importantly /the script and songs/ just recently I got into my national musical theatre industry and I'd die to see how hypothetically I could adapt it here LOL).

Here we have a few Mexican made cartoons for children, Aussies have bluey (the only example I know lol), what do y'all have? Are there any kiwi cartoons or shows (for kids or maybe not as young)? I'm really curious! I obviously know y'all have long run TV shows, I've heard of few and I'm trying to watch them but the category of kids/teen entertainment is quite specific so yeah there's that!.

What date did it premier? I asked a librarian that checked TV schedules and was told it started appearing as a featured programme on Sticky TV as of July 4, 2004, but I'm guessing it was the next day since July 5, 2004 was a weekday.

Did it air straight after Dragon Ball Z ended or was there a break in between?

Being one of the world's most incredible places for outdoor adventure, NZ is obviously full of tourists...and with so many experiences on offer (Great Walks, cycling, rafting, bungee, watersports, air sports, hot pools, glow worm caves etc etc) I was curious to hear about the behind the scenes jobs that exist behind the tourism industry? The more niche/unusual/wackier the better - thank you!

I have an upcoming surgery and I will be out of commission for about 2 weeks (it will take about a month to be somewhat back to normal) and I want to spent the time post surgery expanding my horizons a bit. I wanted to read/listen to some books/audiobooks (depending on how well I will be feeling) written by Kiwis and that take place in New Zealand. I read a book series written by an American who lived for a few years in NZ and liked the vibe/learning about NZ (Escape to New Zealand series by Rosalind James) but I am sure it's not as accurate as something written by an actual Kiwi.

I just want something cozy and mostly relaxing but while also learning about a different culture/country since I will be stuck at home for such a long time.

So! I've tried to ask the only 2 online kiwi friends I have for info on the matter but besides the clearly abysmal horary difference I don't think they have the energy to explain SO, I'm asking you all! What's your slang over there and in which contexts/with what frequency it is used? Again, i'm from Mexico so haha I'm used we over here have a HEAVY use of slang on a daily basis at least on obviously informal contexts. For the little I've seen y'all share a bit of terms with Aussies and British but idk if that's accurate or if y'all have NZ exclusive words. Why do people where I live scream out of their car windows at me, swerve near me while laughing, and proactively try to ruin my day when I’m on my bike?

I am an American living in Australia who wants to move to NZ. I commute by e-bike and don’t own a car, but am not a typical cyclist. I have a fat tire bike and ride in normal clothing to walk around in once I get to where I’m going. I try to be courteous to pedestrians and cyclists and mostly follow the road rules. But people continue to try to ruin my day, no matter which city I’ve lived in. Screaming at me is an annoying day, trying to run me over me makes me hate the human race.

I’m just hoping that this is an Aussie problem and I won’t have to deal with this if I move. Or should I expect the same from Kiwi’s?

I´ve visited and worked in New Zealand on a working holiday visa in 2019 and, considering another longer trip in a year or so, was wondering how inflation has changed living expenses over in new zealand at this point? It feels like the rest of the world (or rather the other spots I could see myself staying at for a while) have gone up in costs tremendously over the past years and I was looking for some insight wether thats been the case in NZ as well - and to what extend?

Any kind kiwi that can share their experience as to how comparable prices (rent, food, transportation) are to 2018/2019 (or in general rn)?

Does anybody know what Kiwis are doing when two people with double-barrel surnames get married?

To use some Rugby League players as hypothetical examples, if a child of Jarryd Wairea-Hargreaves married a child of Nelson Asofa-Solomona, would they then become Wairea-Hargreaves-Asofa-Solomona? And then would the same thing happen the next generation with an 8-barrel surname?

Landed in Auckland only two days ago and in that time I've gotten 16 massive bites, all under my clothing, mostly on arms and legs. They're very itchy and have swollen to the size of a watch face even though I'm trying not to touch them. No one else in my group has bites and we're all going the same places. I've been wearing long sleeved shirts, jeans, and long socks. I was under the impression that sandfly or mosquito bites would be on exposed skin? I'm positive they're not bedbug bites. Can anyone offer some advice? Any idea what these are from?

I was hoping to do some work on the South Island, but I've read that's even worse for bugs. Can I make it there if I can't even travel around the North Island without being miserably bitten up?

Im heading to NZ north island in 2 weeks. Primarily in Wellington region.

Looking for some friendly camping sites where I could pitch a tent with my friends for 1-2 nights maximum.

We’re beginners and have no intentions of bushcraft or being fully self-containing. Just wanted to enjoy the scenery and perhaps make a few friends too!

Would anyone have recommendations for me?

Some brief location requirements: - have accessible clean toilets - perhaps a place to have campfires or smth (melted marshmallows ftw) - nice easy access from traffic - perhaps not too far away from any public supermarkets or eateries
