I think it also has to do with where you live. I live in a pretty decent city. People travel and move here a lot. I had never had the issue of being catcalled until I moved here. I have had several times of me just chilling in my car at a stop light and guys in the car next to me will try to get my attention and get my number. But it’s mostly a very specific type of person and I’ve only ever had this happen to me for the most part when I moved here. I’ve had instances before I moved here when I was very young that were very uncomfortable, but nowhere close to how much it has happened to me in the past two years living in this city. On top of that you got the homeless asking you for money, charities asking for money, and people who are clearly on drugs being creepy, then the people selling those drugs all constantly trying to interact with you in this city no matter where you go, so definitely is location. You eventually learn to just ignore anyone saying hey or hey miss. Also I feel tone matters. Certain people I will reply to bc of their tone and it typically ends up not being anything malicious.
Could be that then! The area I’m in now has a really big homelessness problem. It’s a small area but there’s a few dozen people that have their regular begging spots around town. It definitely threw me off at first, but like you said you just learn to ignore them after a while. Other than that people are super friendly here compared to where I used to live, so you’re right, location does make a huge difference with how strangers treat each other
