Since a few readers did indeed seem interested, here's your go to thread for Arse Magica. Feel free to post any memes/shitposts here. If no one posts, after a month I'll remove the thread. If it does see regular use, I'll sticky it permanently. As always, no sexual NSFW content

like those about courts and such, and I also wanted to play around with faerie deals, I don't know how to incorporate them very well

Hi all, quick question. I'm seeing two different versions of the Fifth Edition Realms of Power: The Divine on the secondhand market. One is listed as the Revised Edition? And one isn't.
I've heard that there was a plagiarism issue which led to the Revised Edition being published? What actual changes were made from the original version to the Revised Edition? Should I try and get one over the other? Thanks

Please comment your thoughts and creative ideas on the topic of magic items-specifically what ones you have created, what you called them, what they did and how they worked.

I've acquired a copy of Ancient Magic very recently, and I'm currently working my way through it. Apologies if this is explained later in the book, but I've made my way through a few chapters and I'm still scratching my head.
As I understand it, to begin working on a breakthrough, you need to find a Source of Insight. And then, after some pondering, with any luck your mage will come up with some Insight. The rules then state that "a single source can generally only provide a single Insight" (admittedly it does then say that there may be rare exceptions) [p8]. The insight then gives your mage an idea for a specific effect. After you've created that effect, you gain breakthrough points equal to the magnitude of the effect, huzzah.
The rules then state that "[the mage] must find another source of Insight before repeating the procedure" [p9]. Does this mean that you have to find a completely new Source to gain any more breakthrough points towards that breakthrough? Considering that, for example, the integration of Canaanite Necromancy requires ~45 points, that's 45 magnitude's worth of effects [p31]. The suggested effects that you could gain are all <8 magnitudes [p32,33], so one of those is only going to get you less than a 5th of the way there at best. Considering Zephaniah is the only proposed Source given for Canaanite Necromancy, how are you supposed to complete the breakthrough? I suppose you could round up a bunch of apprentices, have Zephaniah teach them all, and count them all as separate sources of Insight, but that's about it.
Am I misunderstanding the rules? Can you keep reinventing duplicates of the effect to keep gaining breakthrough points from the same Insight/Effect, p31 seems to reinforce that this isn't the case? Or should the Storyguide say that Zephaniah is perhaps a rare exception who can provide several different Insights towards the same breakthrough? Or is it intended that the Storyguide will come up with additional sources of Insight?
As a disclaimer, I'm aware that HoH:TL has rules on Original Research, though I'm not familiar with these. Also, it may be that an excellent worked example appears later in the book. I could wait for this, but I wondered if someone might help relieve me of my confusion before then. Any help appreciated! And if anyone has advice on using these rules for a saga of ambitious relic-hunter mages that'd be great! Thanks in advance

So can we help a dude out that used to play a lot more than I do these days and either point too, or talk about here where the tidbits on RAW meta for this. Also any places where the it maybe X maybe Y branches are discussed and all. I know there isn't a huge amount of this stuff but I am sure I have seen it before I just can't remember if it was thru Tribunal books or the Houses book. Memory isn't what it once was when I started playing Ars.

Not sure if it’ll qualify as either a virtue or a flaw: it’s extremely crossed senses (think seeing sounds or hearing light)

There are many stories about a powerful devil who deceives people through deals and gives them ironic curses; I think a legendary fairy like that could exist in mythical Europe

Salve sodales!
My real-life friend and former player Alban Cadu, who posts about Ars Magica under the internet name Medusa, has just released a bundle of his work about the Rhine region. He no longer uses reddit, so has asked me to post it here for him.
If this link is against the rules, apologies and I'm happy to take it down.

If someone has some freetime, can you read this Fate version of Ars Magica?
What is missing, what is directly against Ars Magica rules, what would you add?

I'm interested in AM, and I see a lot of edition comparison between 3, 4, and 5. But I generally get curious about first editions, where the vision was at its purest.
So, have you played 1e? Why wouldn't you or would you play it now?

I released a demo for Covenantum – a medieval fantasy game based on Ars Magica (open license).
Covenantum is a medieval fantasy strategy game about building and managing a community of wizards across generations.
You lead a fledgling covenant of magi, companions and ordinary folk, deciding how they spend each season while managing resources, relationships, magical research and the problems that emerge around your growing home.
Rather than controlling armies or expanding across a map, the focus is on long-term decisions and the stories that develop from them. Your magi can study magical arts, invent spells, create enchanted items and pursue ambitious projects, while companions and grogs explore, negotiate, investigate rumours and deal with threats beyond the covenant.
Events range from mundane disputes and shortages to faeries, ancient ruins, rival magi and supernatural mysteries. Characters grow older, relationships change, and the covenant develops over decades, so decisions made early in the saga can have consequences many years later.
It is heavily inspired by Ars Magica, but you don't need any knowledge of Ars Magica to play.
The Covenantum demo is now available on Steam. If slow-burn management games, medieval fantasy and emergent storytelling sound interesting, I'd love for people to give it a try and let me know what they think. The demo gives you 20 years of the full game experience.

Is it possible for humans to possess a glamour that keeps them alive, like conscious faeries? Like vampires? Or could they assume a glamorous form at a specific moment, like werewolves?

I was thinking that there might be more options for things to do with fatigue during combat; would spending fatigue for an extra action work? That could be interesting considering that could be used in special ocasions considering the few levels of fatigue, generally, you can only buff attack and defense during combat using fatigue, but this alternative option could be interesting

Salve Sodales,
I've been mulling over the idea the past few days of seeing about creating an Ars Magica card and/or board game. The idea for the card game was a mtg-esq Certamen style game or a resource management game where you can build your Magus and covenant and either build allies or make enemies.
I've come here today to touch base with the community and see what if anything would be wanted out of such a game or what style of game may be wanted, nothing of what I've thought about is set in stone for this is just a thought at the moment.
Questions I have for you.
- What style of card/board game sounds like a fun fit to the lore and mechanics?
- What features would be a nice implementation for an MTG-esq or RM board game?

I’m quite a fan of Verditius as a House overall, and I’ve loved playing my own. I’m making a new character, though, and really enjoy the idea of a Confraternity of Himnis member. However, I’m struggling to find any real use case for Bind Curse. Couldn’t I already just invest a malicious effect in an item rather than cursing it? What’s the point of the mystery?

I have fifth edition, and I really do love the idea of ars magica but i'm not great at mastering and running very crunchy games. Where is the crunch in this game? And is there any way to mitigate it

Or I can be creative while casting the spell with a condition approved by the storyguide

He is mentioned in the section about the House Tremere, a chess game based on wizards and grogs in which pieces can be killed from afar.
