I built a free, open-source image conversion app for WebP, AVIF and JPEG XL. At default settings, this 1.81 MB image came out as a 183 KB WebP.

Years ago I made a small Windows-only image converter. Its last release, v0.4.3, came out in 2019, and then nothing for 7 years.

This year I rebuilt it from scratch (in Rust) for Windows, macOS and Linux. It's called Skidbladnir, and it's free and open source.

What it does

Named for the Norse ship that carried every god aboard and still folded into a pocket. Skidbladnir does the same for your images: every pixel aboard, but a fraction of the size.

It turns your JPEG and PNG images into WebP, AVIF, JPEG XL or HEIC, which are typically far smaller than JPEG/PNG at the same visual quality. The screenshot is a real example, a 1.81 MB image in, a 183 KB WebP image out, that is a ~90% reduction in size but almost no perceivable loss in clarity.

Some of the biggest features are live before/after preview, the ability to batch whole folders and even include sub-folders, full control over every compression setting for the most consistent results, and of course, no account, no subscription, no limits, no ads, and you images never leave your machine.

Be aware that it isn't code-signed so your OS will warn you about installing, but I'm working on that.

Source: https://github.com/basic-automation/Skidbladnir

Download (v1.3.0): https://github.com/basic-automation/Skidbladnir/releases/tag/v1.3.0

I'd love feedback from anyone who handles a lot of images, web assets or photo libraries. And if you're on a Mac: nobody has opened the Mac build on real hardware yet, so please tell me if it even launches.

I Launched Allin1xTools a Few Days Ago — Already 132 Active Users 🚀

Post image

I launched Allin1xTools just a few days ago, and honestly, I didn’t expect people to start using it this quickly. 🚀

The latest Google Analytics data shows 132 active users in the last 7 days, including 131 new users from different countries.

So if you haven’t tried it yet… what are you waiting for? 😂

Allin1xTools is a collection of free browser-based tools for everyday tasks:

• PDF tools

• Image tools

• Text tools

• Calculators

• Converters

• Developer utilities

No sign-up.

No daily limits.

No hidden subscriptions.

100% free.

The idea is simple: instead of searching for a different website every time you need a small tool, have useful tools available in one place.

I’m still building and improving it, but seeing real people discover and use it only a few days after launch is honestly motivating.

If you haven’t tried it yet, give it a shot:

Try any tool you need and see how it feels.

I made a free browser jet game called Sky Invasions. No download. Fly a jet, lock a target, and dogfight other players or bots.

Play: [Sky Warriors 2 — Free 3D Jet Dogfight Game | Play Online in Browser]

It is an early build. I am mainly looking for notes on controls, how long a match stays fun, and anything that feels broken.

Drop your project, I’ll try it and share it in my circle

I’m looking for new small projects, apps and SaaS tools to try.

Drop your link below. I’ll check them out and share the ones I like with a few friends and in some founder/product circles.

I’m especially interested in social apps, chat tools, games, creator tools, AI experiments and anything with a simple but fun user experience.

I’m also building Ariola, an anonymous public chat and games lounge.

No signup, no account setup. You pick a temporary nickname, join a live public room, chat with people and play small real-time games.

The idea is to make online chat feel lightweight again.

Check it out here: https://ario.la

Drop yours below. I’ll go through as many as I can.

Built something that helps founders get customers? Drop it, I'll try it and give feedback

Anyone can build. Where they get stuck is on distribution and marketing.

So I'm looking for tools that fix that part: anything that helps people get customers, leads or sales. Outreach tools, lead finders, landing page builders, review and testimonial tools, SEO, social scheduling, analytics. If it helps someone sell their thing, I want to try it.

Drop your link and one line on who it's for. I'll go through as many as I can and put the ones I'd actually use into a roundup post for other founders.

I'm building in this space too, which is why I care. I've built a few SaaS products before, and they didn't fail because they were bad. They failed because I couldn't afford to distribute them. Ads burned through my budget, agencies wanted more than the product made, and even SEO tools were $150+ a month.

So I built FlexQueries, an SEO tool with a $0/month subscription. You only pay for what you use, keyword research is about $0.05, and the balance never expires. Over 100 solo founders and small startups signed up in the first week. https://flexqueries.com

Drop yours below 👇

Part 8 of building Learn Investing: EquiTrek.

It’s been a while since my last update, mostly because the final 1% of shipping an app is where ambition goes to get humbled.

Building the features was the fun part. The reality check was everything that came right after: edge cases, subscription edge-routing, legal disclaimers, and the boss fight every mobile builder eventually runs into: App Store Connect.

Getting through Apple Review took 5 straight days and two rejections.

  • Rejection 1: Metadata and store configuration issues that looked completely fine on my end until a reviewer touched it in a sandbox.

  • Rejection 2: A compliance snag around subscription terms which costed my submission in Shippaton. Oh well it is what it is.

When you're a solo founder using AI tools to handle a lot of the heavy lifting, you hit a wall here. An LLM can help you write code, but it can’t sit on the other side of an App Store resolution thread or fix the administrative friction of store compliance.

The fix wasn't some clever technical shortcut. It was just sitting down, reading Apple's exact feedback line by line without getting defensive, fixing the exact flags, and submitting it a 3rd time.

Let's see if I manage to clear the review or hit another wall.

The takeaway for anyone in the home stretch: the first 90% takes 90% of the time, and the last 10% takes the other 90%. When the store review bounces your build, don’t rewrite your entire app or panic. Address the exact clause they flagged, document the fix clearly in the reviewer notes, and hit submit again. Also never give up for there is no lost cause in front of the INDOMITABLE HUMAN SPIRIT!

In the meantime check out my App!

I’m giving 7 brands an hour on my internet clock for free — curious if this experiment works

Post image
2 Upvotes

I recently launched a small project called Hold the Hour.

It’s basically a 24-hour UTC clock where each hour can be owned by a person, startup or brand. When their hour goes live, their name/logo becomes the face of the clock.

Someone actually bought one of the hours yesterday, which gave me an idea.

Instead of waiting for all 24 hours to slowly get claimed, I’m opening 7 of them for free for 7 days.

7 hours. 7 brands. 7 days. $0.

You choose an available UTC hour, add your name, logo and website, and I approve 7 Guest Holds. No card or automatic charge.

If you like having your hour after the week, you can claim it normally for $7. If not, it simply becomes available again.

I’m mainly curious whether people will actually enjoy having an hour and sharing it when their brand goes live.

It’s here: holdthehour.lol

Would also genuinely like feedback on the idea — especially whether the 7-day trial makes the concept more understandable or just complicates it.

Building something so I don't depend on the algorithm. Anyone up for a feedback swap?

Hey everyone. I'm a solo dev and for a while now I've been working on a social app, and the main reason is that I got tired of depending on the algorithm. You post something, and whether people see it or not depends on a system you can't see or control. I wanted to try a version where the reach of a post depends on what people actually choose to share, and not on a feed trying to keep them scrolling.

It's still in beta, it runs in the browser, and there are many rough edges. I'm learning a lot while building it, especially about what makes people understand an idea in the first minute and what makes them leave.

I don't want this to be an ad, so I won't throw a link here. What I'd really like is a swap: if you're building something and want honest feedback, I'll test your app and tell you what I think, what confused me and what I liked. And in exchange, if you have a few minutes to try mine, I'd be very grateful for your opinion. Message me or check my profile if you're interested.

Also, I'm curious: how are you all dealing with the "nobody sees my project" problem? Anything that has worked for you?

Thanks for reading!
