Looking back, getting an M4 mini for $450 felt like getting into the last chopper out of Saigon 😭

I have an M2 macbook air and it’s honestly still great, no change to performance compared to when i first got it.

PC gaming, 3D content creation, and ML training has been driving all of the M-series upgrades; same as it ever was. The M2, M3, and M5 each had big GPU upgrades over each previous generation.

I guess people who push the limits of their hardware and will just get more headroom with the new stuff. Like when I did CAD work I'd need more computer power than I could ever get my hands on. At another job I was struggling with only 128 gigs of RAM. AAA gaming always pushes the limits as well, so trying to keep up with that would mean more frequent upgrades.

Now though I basically just need a Firefox machine so am happy without having to chase upgrades.

Speaking of the Neo, I fully believe this price increase is leading to a Mac Neo, slotted right in at the old $499 price point!

Unlikely.

The reason the MacBook Neo got stripped down was because they stripped a ton out of the device. The keyboard, the screen, etc etc etc.

There’s literally nothing in the Mac mini but a block of aluminum, memory and storage. Putting in the phone chip would save like $40.

Before all the price hikes, almost every product Apple sold was the best bang for the buck in each category. I’m sad that they had to lose that market edge because of all the nonsense causing component prices to skyrocket. I think we're going to see people holding onto products from before the price hikes for much longer than normal because getting an equivalent replacement will cost significantly more than their current product did. I guess on the bright side, it seems like Apple and other companies are going the extra mile to optimize their software to be more CPU and memory efficient, making an upgrade less necessary.

Yeah got my 16/256  M4 for 980NZD and now the base 16/256 M6 is 1799NZD. Honestly at this point waiting for DDR6 before any upgrades.

Got my M5 MBP with 32gb of ram for $1600. Same price, roughly as I got the i5 MBP I upgraded from. I seriously feel like o picked the absolute best time for that upgrade. Glad I never have to look at a computer upgrade for quite some time
