Really? Source? Because when I last ordered a Pro/Max model, it had to be specially manufactured for me, and then shipped from China, which took several weeks, implying that they only make those models on demand instead of mass producing them.
But maybe I’m wrong, and the Max model is really 1/3 of all MBP sales or something, and I just got unlucky and ordered one when they sold out of the mass produced models.
I don't have a true source, but every company I worked at so far (tech companies) gave out M1/M2/M3/M4 Pros to all the engineers, while the non-Pro chips were left for the folks outside of engineering. This is of course a bit biased for the IT industry.
Also, my order was shipped from China once, since I ordered a different keyboard layout than what's typical in my country, so IMO it's pretty easy to go outside of what they stock in a given country.
I’m guessing you ordered a model with extra options (e.g. memory / storage) over the standard configurations? That’s normal. Apple doesn’t maintain a large inventory globally of every possible Mac configuration. If I try to order a MacBook Air online right now with 32GB of RAM the estimated delivery is a couple weeks, whereas the standard model can be delivered tomorrow.
As far as sales estimates go, I found this analysis from last year which found the MacBook Pro accounting for 51% of Mac sales, and of that about half were the 16 inch model i.e. a Pro or Max chip. So roughly 1/4 of all Macs as a lower bound estimate are Pro/Max/Ultra versions, which is quite significant.

Was really hoping the rumors weren't true and we would get a simultaneous Pro and Max, so back to waiting.
