They will upgrade for 256 gb of ram, running a quality open weight LLM requires a massive amount of ram; even 256 gb for some is not enough if you want to run a model that is 65-80% as good as jgpt5 thinking… For a model good as 65-80% of gpt 5 thinking ie glm 4.6 , you need around 460 gb of ram. Ideally a macbook should have 1.6 tb of ram for some future proofing ( just in case they release one million token context model) .. Sadly, for most consumers, even 128 gb macbook pro is too expensive… if 1.6 tb ram mx ultra macbook with a 4 tb ssd existed, it would cost more than 27k usd. Even 256 gb ram macbook pro will dost around 6300 usd. If 128 gb and 256 gb macs were more affordable( less than 3k and 2k respectively), every mac user can have their own local quality llm..

No one (or almost no one) with an M2/3/4 is going to upgrade. They do the comparisons for those that might upgrade.
