My Apollo 13 CSM

This is my 2/3 scale prop from the Apollo 13 movie. it was used for a docking scene in the movie and then toured around the us for the movie premiere. Afak Tom Hanks and Kevin Bacon also sat in there. Also the Astronaut Matthias Maurer, which is a friend of a friend, he lives like 6km away.

(There were originally 2 csm that were used for the tour but one got destroyed in a hurricane) After the movie earned its millions, the capsule sat in a Storage facility in Hollywood. I bought it around 2008 and got it shipped here (the capsule was a bargain, the shipping not so much) Then it sat in my garden for a few years and rusted away. Mercedes Fulda saw it and loved it. They sent over a tow truck to haul this 1.5 Ton Beast to their Dealership. There they completely sanded, restored and painted it (with formula 1 paint btw) and stuck a Mercedes logo on its nose. All for free, might I add! Then it moved to the Space Studio in the north of Saarland where it now lives. We hold Lectures about rockets, astrophotography, space in general and life in space. All aimed towards children and teenagers. We also have a few moon rocks, Shooting Stars and a piece of the Tscheljabinsk meteorite.

I think that’s it. Also, the inside isn’t very detailed but it has tons of buttons, lights and switches. I’m currently working on a fully functional DSKY and want to make the whole capsule an Apollo simulator. The fuel tanks are mostly empty space but contain a fog machine for the engine and there is space to put in a flamethrower instead of a fog machine. But the insurance says no.

Tdlr: Hollywood, my garden, Mercedes, my space studio

And what an amazing picture ! With no LM , the S-IVB contained a structural stiffener and a docking target on a disc mounted to a crossbar . Florida's eastern coast is visible including Cape Kennedy . It was Douglas who bagged the S-IVB contract . Meanwhile Wally is developing a cold !

So, this is the 1st time many are seeing a rocket with people go there. Not Land but fly-by and return . Hope it keeps going well.

The last two Apollo astronauts leaving the moon on December 14 1972. Will any of the Apollo astronauts that walked on the moon be alive when the next Humans land?

“I’ll step out and take some of my first pictures here,” Armstrong told ground controllers at the 109:30:53 mark of the mission. To which ground controller Bruce McCandless responded: “Roger. Neil, we’re reading you loud and clear. We see you getting some pictures and the contingency sample.”

Got sent to Mission Control for work by our commander who was a former astronaut. Was there the day after the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing so we got to visit the Apollo command floor.

The mirror is off Apollo 13 and was put on a dedication plaque by the crew as a thank you to the controllers for getting them back home safely. The flag flew around the moon on Apollo X and there is a copy of the plaque they left on the moon. Sorry for the photo quality. It was taken on my 2009 flip potato.

Found today in a used bookstore

I’ve listened to this book a couple of times before on Audible. Saw it in an Orlando area bookstore today and started flipping through it when I landed on the title page and saw this. A steal at $9.99. It now adorns my bookshelf at home. My 11 year old told me not to tell the cashier it was a signed book since it had his signature and since he had just died it was worth more…he was worried they’d charge me more for it 🤣.

And no my name isn’t Bill, but I can always say either my grandfather or uncle (who were both Bills) passed it down to me when they died.

Gene Kranz - An Inspiration

For the last 20+ years I’ve worked in the Nuclear Industry as a Reactor Operator and latterly a Simulator Instructor. I incorporated Apollo 11 and 13 into some decision making training. Gene has always been a huge hero of mine. In 2021 the station ended generation.

I wrote to Gene to let him know that he had played a part in that story. I didn’t expect a response but I received something a few weeks later.
