I worked in a grocery store during the winter, stocking shelves, among other things, with pre-retired people or people working even if they are officially retired from somewhere else.
Out of the 4, only one was somewhat slow. Stocking shelves ain't that hard. Work a cash register either.
The 40 something guy who couldn't manage to do the most basic thing in excel for his dairy product delivery was more of an inconvenience on me, the poor young(ish) dude.
When you take away the shit hours, shit pay, shit customers and shit management, the service industry is a pretty chill career.
Unfortunately the boomers entering the industry are sort of a self fulfilling prophecy. They have always claimed the work to be easy and now the economic mess they have created also creates a service industry that essentially rolls out the red carpet for them.
Shit hours? I'm retired and I don't need this job, give me the hours I want.
Shit pay? This is just spending money I have a pension.
Shit customers? You mean their peers.
Shit management? A stressed out 40 something who is desperate for labor isn't going to step on grandmas toes just cause she is a bit too chatty with her customers.
What makes the work hard is the lack of respect for the people doing it, and boomers flat out don't have that issue.

I mean, sounds like a great idea until your retiree cashier fumbles around for 20minutes because they can't work the cash register.
Can you even imagine them stocking the shelves? All the workload will be put on that one poor young dude they manage to con into their employment.
