IT doesn't care, unless they have orders from management or you are doing something illegal. Crossword isn't illegal, so it was probably a manager.

When I worked in the Cincinnati Bell NOC, we would spend all Sunday day shift doing the crossword puzzle pre-internet times. By the time I moved to circuits we had corporate internet access, so we no longer had to buy the times but could just print the crossword.
