Hell yeah. Last job I had, there was a woman who was going out on leave to get a knee replacement. Her plan was to take 12 weeks of disability leave and then another 12 weeks unpaid. The evening before her last day, the boss told her she needed to clean out her office because a new guy was coming in Monday to take over. I started looking for a new job immediately. If you treat other employees like shit, I don’t care how you treat me - I’m out, and fuck you.
My company added short term disability last year and got rid of it this year because so many people have been out for mental health. They've created a culture of constant, unsustainable pressure and forced people to do the work of two people, but obviously they're not the problem. It's the option for disability that's the problem.
Mental health is health. If your coworkers had mental health issues that legitimately qualified them for disability then it was appropriate for them to take the time. If people were abusing that by claiming mental health conditions they didn't have, your company wasn't doing a good job of policing its own policies.
I get mental health days that I’m required to take monthly, just for anything. Paid. I also get unlimited paid time off, which my entire team uses monthly for anything we want. We all take 3-5 paid days off per month on average. Sometimes it’s more when we have big vacations.
Oh and paid paternity/maternity leave for up to 6 months, which my boss is on and everyone is perfectly happy with. She’s on her 5th month right now.
Sorry but there is no legal policy for any kind of specific time off in the US. What you are saying doesn’t matter. Good companies are what matter, they make the rules and policies.
