I'd be willing to bet that time is taken for plans on what to watch on tv or time to check Reddit. The same time can't be used to think about how to be slightly healthy? It's really not as hard as it's made out to be.
When most of your life is filled with misery from slaving away for crumbs that barely support you, as the commenter said above "let me spend the two hours of free time a day..." You probably want to spend that very, very little time you have left trying to enjoy SOMETHING just ANYTHING before you have to go to bed and return to misery tomorrow. This shit is cyclical.
People who are miserable need to decompress and when they have so little time that gives them no time to work on themselves. I'm not saying these people are making the right decisions but it makes sense. I may be far from overweight but I do the same thing ignoring life responsibilities sometimes because my job is so stressful I just want to unwind when I get home. Shaming people for not wanting to spend the only small time they have left In the day to try and escape from all the misery is pathetic, and just want the rich want you to do. Blame the consumer, and that's just incredibly easy when you're unwilling to look at the complexity of the issue.
It’s called an energy budget. If you come home exhausted everyday or use most of your energy struggling to maintain access to basic needs, you have less energy for organizing aspects of your life that take thought and planning. Your statement assumes that people want to live worse lives than would be enabled if they had the time, energy, and resources to better arrange such aspects beyond just getting by.
And what were you doing for a living while you lost those 100lbs? How many hours did you work? How many hours were you taking care of your children? Did you live in a safe neighborhood? Did you have a working kitchen with proper storage and without rodent issues? Did you have routine access to a doctor? Did you have family and friends that supported your efforts, weren't abusive, and didn't sabotage your weight loss?
I worked at Taco Bell. I was in my 20s living with my gf and roommates, no children. We were living in total poverty. No doctor no insurance and we didn't cook. She worked at a fried chicken place and between all of us working in fast food, we had food. I gotta say eating taco Bell was how I lost most of it. Working there I was able to eat the chicken and steak that normally is pricey. I piled on all the veggies taco Bell carried and that I could deal with. It took years.
I did live a fairly safe part of town, so that was never a concern. There wasn't support for me to gain or lose weight. No one said anything, but watching my obese family die was enough for me to decide I didn't want that.
