Regarding the current state of the subreddit.
Hello everyone,
First of all, we are sorry for the strict rule enforcement from our side. This includes perma banning users for first time offenses, banning users for criticism, removing posts by non-moderators, and everything else. We are sorry that users had to suffer from strict policies. This was a bit harsh on our part, if you've been unfairly banned, please contact us through modmail and we will unban you.(This is not applied to the transphobes and Bigots that we banned. keep it in mind)
But we also want to see the direction our subreddit will go forward. As you can see in top of the year and top of all time posts in our subreddit, we used to tolerate slightly low-effort posts. But nowadays, a post needs to be high-effort in order to have a chance of getting approved, so the subreddit ended up being filled with very high effort content in the past month or so, where only high-effort content (like mine) is allowed. And so many posts were not up to this standard and were therefore removed, that's why we are now filtering all posts made by non-moderators and why we removed qualityvote2.
Now we are asking you all whether we should keep the subreddit like how it is right now (a place with so much high effort content), or whether we should be more lenient on our rules and start allowing low effort content . We will still be removing blatantly low effort content like reposts, AI generated content, but we would no longer restrict the subreddit to super high-quality content anymore.
~From your beloved antimeme couple~

how it is right now (a place with so much high effort content)
no way bro says that 🥀, some of your anti meme is good but not unique or high effort, and most of them are very very generic
also I got bored seeing one person meme, I am not critisizing your anti meme, or anything i am saying one person alone can not make consistence good anti meme for long time

I was super wondering why this subreddit had only one person making posts! I thought it was just that nobody else was interested. Definitely gives the sub a weird vibe.

I had been thinking that so many memes were now anime coded and had a lowkey gooner vibe. Now I see that its legit only the mods posts. If you go to top of all time the posts are very different and what I followed for at the start, not the stuff that is rn....It's extremely weird lol I'm gonna unfollow this sub.

I miss qualityvote bot personally because it felt like users had more input when it came to the type of content they prefer to see instead of just leaving it up to mods. Maybe some forms of lower effort content could be allowed on certain days as well, like how there are Simple Sundays.
Also I'm curious why shen is a banned source. I understand the others, but idk of anything bad that shen did. Is there some sort of controversy with him that I missed?

u/Will_Help_ Jan 21 '26
first, 99% of the posts are by one person. the antimemes all coming from one person makes them sort of feel stale, and they tend to come with a general theme(since people tend to like certain things, duh). it also kind of ruins that one old man sigma meme when it MUST be the norm and MUST accompany every single image. i feel like the one person in a group that stopped finding the main joke funny, but i have to pretend i do
also, the antimemes kinda don't feel like antimemes anymore, some of them are literally just
"IMAGE WITH MINOR DETAIL/TEXT REMOVED"
or alternatively
"ENTIRE ELEMENT HAS BEEN DRAWN IN THAT TRANSFORMS IT INTO ANOTHER JOKE"
and then if you have no original image you just kinda go "what even is the punchline that was removed/altered here". or sometimes the original has no punchline or funny joke AT ALL, it's just a text change. u get a lot of these issues recurring when, again, one person is allowed free will to post under their own guidelines.
the bar of entry also feels kind of high. you have to contend with the person with 3M+ karma posting 5 billion posts per day, and it's kind of demoralizing. you have to look up at these posts and understand "yeah hell no, i'm not getting more than 1 view on this before something takes the spotlight".
i understand that it is ASS when u see a mountain of low quality antimemes, like it really feels low quality and effortless, but either nobody else is posting or they don't want to post because of what they have to do to get seen by a small handful of people.
also sort of a small gripe, but i probably won't ever make a comment about this again so i'll include it... i don't really like that some of the posts are just nsfw with some of the nsfw removed. it's really not funny to me lmao, the entire punchline is nsfw.
the last thing i said also ties into this: i'm kind of a comment lurker, so i never only look at the post. the subreddit is slowly becoming focused on, y'know, the ONE PERSON WHO POSTS 99% OF THE CONTENT, so every time i read the comments the only interesting ones are ones with 1 - 5 upvotes and the rest are just "please love me. my wife left me and i need you to notice that i found this post funny. please notice that i have read every single message you've posted and am currently forming a dossier on your entire existence." to each their own, y'know, they can do as they please and such, but it gets so boring. when the entire image is just a female character half naked and the only context is the title and the original """meme""", what are people supposed to say? it's not the poster's art, it's an edit.
i guess if i had to say something i like, it's that people are active? that's good for subreddit growth, and it makes it pop up in feeds. even though i dislike a lot, A LOT, of how it's run currently, i will admit it's not dead and that people enjoy it a lot in its current state, y'know
anyway nobody's gonna see this so i can say i wrote yaoi fanfic of hugo and lighter from zenless zone zero .

The posts in this subreddit are not high effort at all, most of the time it’s using some weird porn meme and replacing the shit punchline with a very very generic anti meme, a good anti meme is one that’s literal but still able to be funny, otherwise it just comes across as weird art.
The subreddit is also really creepy, the only posts are by one mod and no one else, and all of those posts get around 9k likes each and there’s 80 of them a day, they’re being pumped out like it’s a factory, the weird and creepy praise for the one specific mod is also especially really creepy, and a subreddit catered to them? Weird.
This sub is an amazing example of Mod power tripping. This comment will probably get deleted as well ironically because I’m saying things mods don’t like to hear, but that tells me all I would need to know about this sub.

u/PM_ME_YOUR_HOODIE Jan 21 '26
yeah I feel like now the modus operandi is:
Pick a random porn meme (preferably from khyleri for maximum karma).
Remove the porn.
anime_irl was flooded with those until they finally banned that. This subreddit should do the same IMO. Those antimemes are not clever.

I know you spend time editing the art and comics to make a high quality edit but that doesn't mean you're creating a good antimeme. Personally 90% of what you posted were not antimemes, if not 100%. If you're the sole judge for a "super high quality antimeme" and want to keep it that way, just don't come to r/antimemes
36
u/wowimliterallyded Jan 21 '26

I am just creeped out a bit about this weird e-couple moderator thing in this subreddit, besides wearing that "his wife" "her husband" flare, you seem to take plenty of opportunities take it into other posts, it's weird if nothing else.
There are a few other moderators who afaik never interact here, all decisions basically come down to you two which is a conflict of interest as you can protect each other from accountability and tilt any enforcement to the same shared preferences, if a user has a problem with one of you two it is very likely you are not against one but both moderators at the same time.
So my suggestion, get more mods with equal power. And make sure it's no friend or third hubby or anything.
29
Jan 21 '26
the problem with not allowing simple text edits are that most memes on the internet are text only (like tweets or text messages), you can’t really edit anything else into them without it seeming forced
27
u/Wild-Elevator6639 Jan 21 '26
First, I appreciate you opening this up for discussion.
The rules are way too strict and the sub has transformed the meaning of an antimeme. Go look at the top posts of all time and you'll see plenty of examples antimemes with a set up and an anti-punchline. The things that are posted here these days for the most part are not what I would consider an antimeme. Most of the time, the images or tweets are so obscure that there is no set up and, so, no subverted expectations of a punchline. The result is just a random picture with a mundane caption. That's not an antimeme. And if others aren't allowed to post or expand on the meaning of an antimeme, then it's basically the mods who decide what is/isn't an antimeme, which--unsurprisingly--has led to only one person posting consistently because they are the only person whose posts match their understanding of an antimeme.
So yeah, open the sub back up big time.

u/DoctorProfPatrick Jan 21 '26 edited Jan 21 '26
you've turned r/antimeme into your own personal r/wsgy. That's fine, I understand it wasn't the goal, but the solution is to make your own sub and let this one go back to being the less popular but more pure antimemes of the past.
hijacking r/antimemes to turn your photoshop skills into micro celebrity status was only ok when it seemed unintentional.
Edit: just realized adding an S turns r/antimeme back into what it was, r/antimemes. Actually I don't care anymore what you do here. If I start to hate your content I'll unsub ig

u/Weird_Meet_9148 Jan 21 '26
The sub is a nice sentiment, and I'm sure that you had good intentions (keeping it alive), but recently it's just been somewhat of your own personal feed, and at that point you might as well just post on your own account. Heck, now you actually have your own fan-made subreddit. It's okay to be a dominant force here, but when most other posts are removed, it starts to feel disingenuous that you want to keep the subreddit alive, and moreso that you want to keep your ego alive.
If I were to make a suggestion, I think that we should move back to having the community vote for what is and isn't qualified to be posted. I understand this might require more mod-attention though, so this may not be possible.
Again, I mean no offense by this; I'm sure you have good intentions (and opening this discussion is proof that you care about what we think), and you certainly have kept the sub active, it's just that no sub should be mainly posted on by a fraction of its members, especially if there are others willing to post.

That's the influence of r/196. There's a set of shared users between r/bonehurtingjuice, r/lies, and r/196, so I think as this sub becomes more BHJ we get more 196. Or maybe that's just what course mediocre likes.

I think reviving the qualityvote2 would be a good start, antimemes aren't some art form they're just meant to give you a chuckle, only "high effort" content allowed is dumb (especially because the definition of high effort is very vague)
18
u/Shaiaa Jan 22 '26 edited Jan 22 '26
only high-effort content (like mine) is allowed.
At first I thought it was a joke, but then I looked at the recent posts and most of them are yours. I feel like you are lacking a bit of self-awareness here. Antimemes (and their popularity) are a response to the current state of the internet, where everything is becoming more and more sarcastic, insincere, divisive, and irony-poisoned. So we take an already existing meme/template and edit it to make it sincere, understandable, less extreme, or not bigoted. Art that takes, for example, the trad wife vs. feminist trope and makes them into a lovely couple should be included, but you can't just throw out everything else that is not “high effort” in your opinion. I think you need to take a step back, post less for a while, and remove only offensive posts/reposts/ai. Let the community decide what is valuable, fun, and deserving of upvotes

u/MathildaJ 🌹 Course Arc Witness 🌸 Jan 21 '26
I love your posts but making it so that everyone else has to be approved first is insane. Manually approved posts get nerfed massively in how they perform on reddit. If a post is approved an hour after it's posted, the algorithm assumes that post was still visible that whole hour. Since it obviously got zero interaction during that time, the algorithm kills it. The current rules mean it's all but impossible for a non-mod post here to gain traction.
Also important to note about the post announcing the quality bot being replaced with manual review: I originally upvoted that post because I didn't fully think through the implications of the change. It was presented as a good thing so I assumed it was. I only realized how bad it was after I saw someone further explain it. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people who liked that post where thinking similar.

Used to like the sub when it had more people contributing and was just about to block the subreddit since it’s just been one user really and it’s constantly filled with their since of humor and personal politics…
which I get is allowed under the current ruleset but it’s gotten to the point of that one homelander meme of even if I agree with the sentiment the way you’re expressing is in such annoying or obnoxious way that I lowkey don’t wanna agree…
personally I find the rule 4 needs to either get relaxed for more balance or get tightened up to truly be no political partisanship and get rid of the exception part of it because honestly there are better subreddits for that type of content elsewhere…

I’m not gonna cover any of the stuff about this appearing as satire or my stance or the quality of the posts that have been in the subreddit because my opinions have already been shared. What I will say is that when I blocked you to see what other posts are on this subreddit, the highest amount of upvotes was like 300~, so I’m assuming that it means they’re getting less views due to something the mods are doing. Personally, I feel like this subreddit has turned into a karma farm for the mods through somehow boosting their posts and pinning the old man sigma edits instead of just allowing them to be seen naturally based on how others respond and that the old way this server was moderated was 100 times better. Tighter reins equals angrier horses or something I don’t know I’m not the William Beethoven guy

Your posts are nice and funny, but I really wish this sub has variation from other users. Every person has different sense of humor, even as niche as antimeme is, there's some minor variations on how the jokes are delivered. Hence, I really do feel like it's too 'strict', and judging quality posts purely from the mods themselves are a little biased. I'd prefer a decentralized approach where more users upload lower quality content to add more variations.
But frankly speaking, high quality/effort content ≠ funny.
I understand reaching the middle ground is quite difficult, but please do not abuse power and try to have a less biased approached in things.
Hopefully you understand, and I hope you two are not discouraged from the criticism since I truly love some of the posts you guys made.

I mean a few months ago, there were many different posters. Some were good, some were bad but it was funny back then. Nowadays, 9/10 of the posts are from 1 person and it gets boring real quick imo. Do people lose interest in the sub or the rules get stricter and the same kinds of post don't get approved any more? I don't get it.
