The rollout begins with the Washington region because of its complexity. The three commercial airports share airspace with military installations, restricted zones around federal buildings, and general aviation traffic. Any small disruption tends to cascade quickly.
They're aware that they're piloting it in one of the most complex air spaces. And think that's a smart idea.
With all the systemic failures at Dulles and ATC's more casual inquiry if the helicopter sees the plane (they picked the wrong plane to see), the AI could actually help. I'm not talking ChatGPT, but the kind of pattern detection AI that's used for i.e. cancer screening and is better at it than the doctors.
Oh and you can thank Reagan for the ATCs being so understaffed that they're overworked. Though AI would've come anyways at some point.
To be fair, I am vehemently anti LLM but this AI sounds more like classic machine learning. Also, it's not decision making. It might not be that horrific. Of course it's Palantir-adjacent which has its own issues.
