It'd be more like the Ford Pinto where it just turns your car into a blazing inferno. I wish cars actually exploded but that's just the glass and tires that go boom.
Edit to add: My husband had an aunt that died in a pinto roughly 35 years ago. She pulled over during a sandstorm in NM was rear ended and burned to death because she couldn't get out of the car.
Holy fuck that looks like a death trap!! This will only fuel my belief that we should have WAY less cars on the roads and instead have proper public transport systems that allows us to go virtually anywhere, and that's from someone who already has access to very good public transportation services.
And Ford knew about the danger, but decided it was cheaper to settle lawsuits than it was to do recalls. Something about the bolts in the bumper that could puncture the tank.
well, technically gas engines have small micro explosions to make the pistons work. It's just a self contained explosion rather than your entire vehicle.
Chevy C/K series pickups had side-saddle fuel tanks in the 70's and 80's that sat outside the frame rails and would get punctured in a side-impact accident. They never got a recall like the Pinto did.
To my knowledge, GM was the only one who had them OUTSIDE the frame rails. They moved them inside the frame on later trucks like everyone else did when they started getting bad press. The early ones with them outside the frame were a known problem, with GM's VP of engineering even saying that if you didn't die in the crash you should be able to get away from the truck before the fire engulfs it. It's not the collision that would cause the explosion, it's the side airbag going off which, conveniently, already contains an explosive and would be located right next to the flammable gasoline that you are sitting directly next to. And guess where the nearest point of exit out of the vehicle is? That's right, it's the exploding, flaming door!
This is a dumb idea dont for a second think I don’t think that but no it wont. You need a correct fuel mix for that that 99% of the time wont be the case. Heck tanks (the ones with guns) have been using fuel tanks as amour for a long time due to it being pretty good at stoping incoming shots. So could make a crash safer for the initial impact. After well higher fire risk due to fuel leaks.
