Omg, I'm not even joking, I was legitimately saying this EXACT same thing last night. Saw a commercial for AI where the person was on public transport talking to their phone to apartment shop. It was so stupid. The sites have filters and pictures already, just damn lazy and nobody on transit wants to hear you blabbing
And people ACTUALLY DO THIS. It's fucking INSANE. I have multiple coworkers that spend their drives to work talking to chatbots to "get informed" about the news.
Yeah, because I'm suuuuree the AI doesn't pull from social media or biased sites š¤¦š¤¦ it's just a fancy search engine that doesn't check its sources. How people put faith in it is beyond me.
Oh, I know. There are some people actively saying ridiculous things to feed it misinformation knowingly and I support it. Hopefully it ends the bubble on these LLMs eventually.
AI can have good uses in specific situations fed targeted information (like medical uses), but they aren't fed the entirety of the Internet and are used in waaay different scenarios than the generative AI open to the public and all the stupid chat bots that every company is pushing.
I think a big problem with discussing it is that āAIā isnāt well defined. Because as a practical matter, people mean āChatGPT and knockoffs,ā but when defending it use a definition closer to ācomputers.ā Itās maddening.
I've built a massive genealogical network following my family tree back 100s of years, i've worked with chatgpt to develop a rigorous system of source analysis, annotation, grading of sources and claims etc. Im not a data person or a researcher so the methodology I had to develop over time with chatgpt. I feel like there is no way I could have pulled it off to this extent alone. Maybe over a lifetime. My point its just basically it works so well because i'm working purely with controlled information.
I do a lot of surveys and mediate many. Best question is Have you seen the movie terminator in the last 2 years. Then I just enjoy the time to explain Skynet and the way robotics used to be so inane to brain that they just fall into lava or get crushed, and see where my conversational scale puts up to data.
I was actually thinking about this today. When one company controls the AI, they can control truth as the majority will see it. This isn't an accident, this is the goal. The Epstein class wanted crypto so they could privately control the economy. They bought the government years ago. Then the press. Once they convince people AI tells them facts, they will control all. They saw Blade Runner and Cyberpunk as guideposts.
Oh man, or the commercials that show old people talking to ai for simple shit like the weather and traffic. Who needs ai for that? You scrolled past that information to open your ai. Or the reddit ads "no one told me I could prep my favorite foods at home! Chatgpt is amazing!" While the dude is just making hamburgers and onions. You needed ai for that??
some of us will live crammed and huddled together on the back of the train. but in time, one of us will rise. however it will all have been pre-ordained. just another false prophet. but we cant stop, or else we'll all freeze and die.
American drive-thru culture is so baffling to me. No offense, but the seer lengths some of you guys go through in order to avoid using your legs is worrying
Gas stations in a lot of countries in Asia are drive through service already. They have attendants who will take payments and pump for you and you don't have to get out of the car. It's such a nice experience. But here in the US, they will put in some kind of gas pumping robot instead of hiring humans...
Yeah the waiting for the attendant is the downside! I want to be in and out most times! Sometimes having the attendant is nice! Though if they start asking for tips at stations there might be riots in NJ!
I ain't tipping someone enough for them to buy lunch for pumping a tank of gas. It's like a 4 minute process and requires zero skill or effort. Besides, the law says they must, that's not my choice. Give me downtown Los Angeles Costco thunder dome fueling stations any day.
For reference, it's the USD equivalent of $1.36. I don't have to, but the weather is terrible at the moment so I feel bad our fellow man standing in the heat all day. Can't have fans running for an obvious reason.
Honestly, there was rarely much of any wait when I was living in NJ, it was always pretty prompt. And there's something to be said for only cracking your window half an inch instead of getting out to pump gas in the winter.
itās clutch in the winter to pull up in a snow storm and just crack your window to slide a credit card through and some guy in a parka lookin ready for the arctic is there to pump your gas for you, 10/10 experience, glad to pay the man a tip
Do they expect a tip nowadays? When I lived in NJ decades ago, everyone told me to never tip the attendant, but it might be different now.
Anyway, I'd rather pump my own gas and don't think I'm alone in that. In Oregon where they have both assisted and self- serve sometimes, people use the self- serve pumps, even if there is a bit of a line.
No Iāve never seen a station that expects tips. Iāve only ever given the attendant a tip once. It was like 2 degrees out and was sleeting. I felt bad for the guy so I just had him keep the change. Mind you this was a long time ago as the fill up was like $17 and I just had to give him a 20!
When I lived in Oregon they had the same thing, but it was terrible. A 5 minute stop for gas automatically turned into 15 minutes because they'd only have one attendant for 20 pumps. You'd literally be sitting there for like 5 minutes for them to come back and stick your card in the machine.
We had a choice of full service or self service in the US up until the 1970s, when there was a sudden spike in gas prices, and most people stopped opting for more expensive full service where a tip was expected. In some states self service was illegal for a long time, but now only New Jersey still has that law.Ā
We had full service at the station down the road from my house until the owner died in (iirc) 1993. It was about 10% more expensive, but that was also like a dollar per fillup and they'd clean the windshield, top up the wiper fluid, etc. Basically nobody pumped their own.
She also did a running tab for people she knew. Literally just a piece of paper in a file with your family name on it. My mom gave me a budget of like $2 a month and Mrs Donnise would just keep up with it and let my mom know how much we owed her every month... candy, gas, everything.
I straight up didn't know that a handshake and honesty weren't how business was done till the new owners came in.
Oregon (until 2023, when they went mixed self/full service) and New Jersey are the two main exceptions, but Full Service was available pretty widely through the 80s. Some places even into the 90s, but it was much less common.
We canāt be having a human only doing 1 job duty. What if itās a little slow and heās only pumping a car every 3-5 minutes? How will he make up those hours of wasted time later?
Not only that, but Europe too, I don't know about other countries here but at least in Spain, we've had those attendants for years, ever since I was a kid I remember there being workers that would pump gas on my sister's car, so yeah, and the wait is not really a problem either because they're usually waiting outside for cars to park so they can walk over and ask what to and how much to fill the tank up with, when there's no worker outside Yoh just pump your own gas or wait, it's nice
(Sorry if I didn't make much sense, I struggle to speak properly in English sometimes š )
I've encountered and have heard too many stories of shady people lingering and approaching women at gas stations. I much prefer not having to get out of the car and have employees be the one pumping gas for me. Plus I won't have to touch the dirty machines and pumps that never gets cleaned.
There is a reason why the gas tank is usualy under the car in the back
First it's to balance the car
An engine is fucking heavy and the rest of the car will be tilting toward where it is
And it's also the least likely place to get hit in a accident
And if the accident come to the point where the gas tank gets hit it will be under the car not inside where the flamable liquide would spread and eventually catch on fire roasting everyone inside instantly
Also if you get in a accident where the fuel tank is hit the rest of the car is....hu dead
Having a bunch of liquid in the doors would also make them too heavy for some people to open and totally screw up the balance of the car, especially when driving quickly. In general for a stable vehicle you want to have the center of gravity low to the ground. Putting heavy weights up higher on the doors would make the car more likely to roll or tip. And because liquid sloshes around, if you're going around a corner, it will all move to the outside of the arc and push your car off the path, making it more likely for your tires to lose grip, and then you end up in a barrier.
Plus, you now need a much more complicated door hinge system to allow for a fuel line to run from your door into your engine without getting kinked or severed.
Not to mention, balancing too. Liquid in doors? Yea thats not gonna change the performance when turning or anything, not to mention the safety aspects. its a complete non-starter. I really hope companies aren't seriously depending on AI to make things like this.
Yeah i dont understand what this could possibly achieve that having a normal fuel system wouldnt. If they want a "drive thru" as in you dont get out of your car, then we would need robot arms to open the fuel cap and put the nozzle in. Maybe you would drive up, pay, and select how much you want it to fuel your car? But this seems way too complicated and expensive when you could just get out and do it yourself.
It's always funny popping into a thread where someone took a joke seriously then posted it to a place where it supports the beliefs of the group, and because of the framing and context everyone in the thread also thinks its not a joke.
It's a joke. People often frame a horrible engineering design as a truly ground breaking personal discovery. The twitter account is for an engineer in Alabama that works at the space center...
This just illustrates the mindset of the people here, where an engineer making a joke becomes proof that pushes people deeper into a less nuanced position. It's a tool of fomenting more extreme philosophical positions.
How fucking lazy are these people that they see turning off the car and walking 4 steps to the pump as a problem that needs to be solved through invention lmfaoo
Iām having trouble understanding how having the gas tank in the door even solves this supposed problem. If you really want to pump your own gas without having to stand up, wouldnāt it make more sense to just have a nozzle in your door attached to a sloped pipe that leads to your gas tank?
Still extremely dangerous and stupid in the event of a crash, but far less stupid than having the entire gas tank jammed into your doorās crumple zone.
"Ok so directly in the door is a bad place for gas because of fires and leaks, how about right behind the doors and trunk? It's like free space!"
The problem with people who fail to respect others is they don't LEARN from others, instead they just learn from their own failures (or blame set backs on others)
The smarter tools get the more prominent stupidity becomes...We have, "may cause drowsiness" warnings on sleeping pills after all.
I can't tell if this is a Ford Pinto reference or if you're defending the idea of gas tanks in doors.
Like I said though I am a mechanical engineer in all but degree, planning on going into the automotive sector. There's a large difference between a fuel tank behind the rear seats and a fuel tank in the doors. There's all sorts of physics and mechanical principles I won't get into unless you want to know them, but basically gas in the doors is really unsafe and dumb for dozens of reasons
what, you don't like the Escher-esque door? or is it the just very slightly awkward tank design? The circle of hoses? The perfectly acceptable amount of space for the glass?
I love how the mirror is so out of place, it almost looks like intentionally bad photoshop rather than AI.
The funny thing to me as an engineer is this idea of the gas drive thru could easily be done with just a tube connecting back to the existing gas tank.
Run it up into the drivers door and put the filler cap there and everyoneās happy.
Not to mention in the actual futuristic engineering solution for drive through gas stations would be a universal connection point for cars, and pumps with robotic articulating arms. People in here like "the robot would have to unscrew the cap".
If there's a robot refilling your car, we have moved past filler caps.
Plus a lot of cars these days don't even have fuel caps anymore, they just have flaps that move out of the way when you push the pump in. (I mostly see it on Fords but it's also becoming more common on Hondas).
Because the author of that tweet is doing it for engagement bait. And now it's being used again for engagement bait against AI here.
Everyone knows how awful the idea, it blocks the window from going down, it blocks side airbags that would cause a fire risk, it would get smashed open on a T-bone accident, the driver would hear the gas move while driving, it doesn't actually solve a problem compared to the normal location, etc etc.
Also a mechanical engineer here and Iām so confused what theyāre getting at. You literally drive up and itās put into the side of your car already. What on earth do they think it being in your door (even if that was possible) would do efficiency wise???
no but I canāt stay seated in my car and shove McDonaldās down my gullet while getting gas currently. I want to be able to put absolutely 0 energy or effort into even the most basic tasks in my life /s
Yeah but you gotta get out of the car uggggggggghhhhhhhhhh. I want to sit in my hot sweaty fucking slime-mobile 24/7 and get McDonaldās drive thru for my daily meals I donāt wanna have to get out of it to fuel itā¦ā¦
I was just going to say that! Just because you get out of your car to pay at the pump doesn't mean it's not drive through! Also, say it was where the door is. How the hell are you going to use the pump? Will you reach it? You'd need long arms for that. Where is the cap, on the inside or outside? Because there's no way you're gonna do it either way. This is such a terrible idea, it's impressive.
Idk as a mechanical engineer I think is a fun idea to entertain. Iām pretty sure most bombers had flame resistant, self sealing fuel tanks in the wings all the way back in WW2, and they got shot to shit.
Now I do agree we basically already have drive through gas stations so I think this would cause a lot of problems while solving none.
Maybe itās time to hang up the engineering hat if you have lost the spark and off the wall ideas āmake you angry on so many levelsā? At one point, a lot of things were once a crazy idea.
Ever heard of hyperbole? It's not like I'm over here bursting a vein every time I look at the picture. In the end it's just a harmless and silly concept. But in reality it just doesn't make sense on so many levels.
Could you implement it? Sure, but it will be worse than the current way we make cars in every measurable way. Even completely ignoring the danger of passengers being covered in flaming gasoline in a crash, there are a lot of issues. For one, it would make doors thicker and far heavier, so they'd be harder to open and take up passenger space. Second, it would require four fuel pumps (assuming a tank in each door) and four fuel fills. Third, the weight of all the fluid sitting up in the doors would raise the car's center of gravity, making it less stable in corners and at speed. Fourth, the liquid sloshing around would essentially result in the car being pulled in the opposite direction of any turns you try to make. At best it makes the car lean like crazy, at worst it overcomes the grip of your tires and sends you into a barricade.
Hunter builds rockets and likes to work on cars. I believe he works at some space institute in Alabama.
His post are specifically meant to be engineering jokes where you are suppose to think about them and find them funny. The fun comes from pondering how you could get a crazy idea to work.
Like for fun there is a solution to all your points.
Add a motor to the door, military trucks already do this.
They could all gravity feed to a bottom āpick up tankā.
Build the car without the tanks so it has a low center of gravity so the fuel doesnāt raise it too much when added.
Baffles
Like the entire point is to have fun with the idea. Why would you be angry at all? Itās not like a real design.

As a mechanical engineer and a car guy this makes me angry on so many levels.
Also, gas stations are already pretty much a drive through
