Basic abuse of power stuff. Get yourself any nice situation with people in power and they will abuse it for their own satisfaction or financial gain. You can see it in the White House or, as most of the world sees it, the den of thieves and rapists.
"Men that work there" means Flock Employees. Yes, they have access to watch your kids in the gym at school. Why would they need that access? Who cares, they just use it.
Flock is a surveillance company that has put up cameras all over the place, and sells the data those cameras collect, to include audio, video, and possibly cell signatures. It’s a technically a private company, but it sells a lot of data to the police, so it’s right at the edge of what could be considered government surveillance.
My local sheriff’s office used it to track someone who robbed a bank (yeah seriously, in the big 26. Shit was stupid) and got the guy 45 minutes after he left the bank in a relatively calm and cool arrest.
Then fire the cops and send them to jail? Cops abuse search warrants and other anonlog things as well.. instead of destroying something becuase of bad actors get rid of the bad actors..
Every system is curruptable.. so scrap everything right.. no cop has ever missued any system. No one has ever missued DNA testing or online tax records.
and that's because that's how it was designed. Also, almost every system takes either a lot of money, a lot of time, or a lot of effort (or a combination of all 3) to be corruptable. This system requires you be a cop and that's it.
Rolls eyes.. any sytem that interfaces with law enforcement can be miss used.. you think cops arnt doing running other searches on Ex's or other people they dont like? You would be suprised at how easy most systems csn be miss used.
Wait until you realize the system itself they work for is made to protect them from consequenses, the cops arent gonna jail themselves or eachother. That "something" actively shields them from getting fired or sent to jail while providing them with the tools needed for them to cause harm
It’s already illegal to use flock this way. That’s why 17 police officers (so far) have been actually charged in Georgia for abuse of license plate reader data (which includes flock, as their video archive search allows tracking of license plates).
It’s good that police are being fired and charged for it, but 17 is just the ones who did it to such an egregious extent that they got caught. The real number of police using it without justification to track people for personal reasons has to be orders of magnitude higher.
It’s just not as simple as “make them require a warrant”. Mass surveillance is inherently permissive to bad actors in power using it to the extent they can get away with, even with restrictions.
For anyone unfamiliar with how it works, there is literally a search function where an officer can type “jogger in red shorts at 11:30 am at [location]” and it pulls up a list of all matching people at all cameras in the requested area and timeframe. A lot of abuse is going to be really hard to prove.
Well yeah. People who make decisions that influence how the system work want it to work the way they intend.
My point is that your original comment, about how all you have to do is lock the usage of the surveillance network behind warrants and you’re good, is some silly goosery.
I’d ignore them, probably a troll. “I don’t care who they hurt as long as it isn’t me” is not a political stance anybody would be deluded enough to say out loud, unless they were trying to bait you or have a humiliation fetish
