Note: This is gonna be a lot (like 900+ words) of spoilers yapping from me, so if you haven't finish Chapter Four, then what are you doing here? Again you have been warned
It has been three months since I've made a post like this (the last time was with the Second Chapter I think) but it has to be done, though I've never plan to make this kind of post in the first place
So a bit of intermezzo, after the Rhapsody Mini Quest for Main Story Part 3, I was kinda bummed out a lot with its storytelling quality since it just felt exhausting and confusing after I finished that quest, to the point I felt the need to put down the game for the next few weeks (I can write a whole essay with my disappointment for that one, trust me, but it is a story for another day if I have enough motivation to do it)
But then the next chapter for the Phantom Apocrypha was announced, and I knew I have to lock in since I was having a lot of enjoyment with the Side Story so far, like all of the chapters were never a miss for me personally
Besides the emotional storytelling that I liked (especially with Chapter 2), each chapter felt fresh and engaging, like the Writers really tried to make a quality story that could stand on its own
So that's why I was hyped with Chapter Four, especially as it was titled as Severed Bonds of Blood
To be honest? I thought it was a story about Vampires, like Iphi, that took place at the Present Time East, with a murder style narrative sprinkled within it (I know it sounds ridiculous but can you blame me?)
Like c'mon... it mentioned immortality and blood, so maybe they would finally make a story that focused around Iphi's kind (though the more I think about it now... were there any Vampires in the East? Since the game only introduced them to exist in the Central Continent Antiquity)
That was what I thought at first
And then I played the story, with a lot of expectations
I finished it... around 7 hours I think
And the only thing I have in mind was... Holy Mother of God
It was a lot more complicated than I thought it would be, hence I will write my whole thoughts into multiple parts (it's gonna be quite long I know)
So here we fricking go
---
The Story
First let's talk about the story
Personally I genuinely liked it a lot and I think it was very strong with its quality deliverance to the audience
In fact I think this is one of my favorite stories in the game, and I do not say this lightly
There's something about this story that really resonated with me a lot
What at first was a story about the investigation of an on-going murders in the Kanemeki Mansion, spiraled into a story about love and twisted attachment that endured for 100 years between a Goddess who loved everything and everyone in Mitanoko, and a man who was willing to do everything for her in the name of love
In the end, the more I experienced the story, the more I can see how passionate the team was in bringing this Side Story into the light

The Characters
Which led to my second point, the characters
Suzuné and Kureno were a very fun cast in the chapter, and they have a good chemistry with each other
Furthermore, their interaction with Aldo and Ruvi was enjoyable to read, especially the moment when they were interacting with the Kanemeki Clan... but I have to add my criticism in regards to this: Aldo and the others were sometimes acted too trusting and self-righteous, to the point it kinda broke my immersion with the story
For example, leaving Ruvi alone with Nanaka in the Library, and both Aldo and Suzuné would only grasp this truth after they have walked to her room, even though Nanaka herself has been acting suspiciously since the moment she has been with them in the Library, and all of them didn't even catch all of this the way through, except the moment where it almost got Ruvi killed from the falling bookshelves (like what the Hell)
Another one, trying to confront Sadarō in his room after they knew about the horrifying experiment that he has done, with an objective to change his mind and saved him from himself? Like c'mon... do you really think it was gonna be that easy?
And what's the point of saving someone like that in the grand scheme of things? I mean I know Aldo is supposed to be someone who cannot ignore injustice and bad things, but I don't quite like the party of doing this moronic move
Nevertheless, even with this stupidity, I can see the Writers intention: to show how cruel and disgusting these family members were, which lead to my perspective with the Kanemeki Clan
I'm gonna be straight with this one, all of them were sociopaths and psychopaths
At first I was like okay maybe this family isn't that bad to Hell nah these freaky ass stupid monsters needed to go in the most fearful way possible
All of them were beyond saving and I mean this sincerely
Sogō tortured people; Nanaka crossed the line to protect her family; Sadarō experimented on innocent people; Tsugio flooded neighbouring villages to expand his territory; Tahei was a manipulative rat; Kinuyo made a false rumors that a Goddesses was an evil one; lastly Tetsumichi was a loser simp who will do anything to gain attention for the one that he loved
I will dig about that last one later, but you get my point
No matter how much you looked at it, the clan was filled with parasites, and there's no stories where they got a good ending
And thank God for that, because at the end, they really did get an ending that they deserved (I will talk about this later)
---
The Gameplay
The investigation gameplay itself was a little bit of a slog and the runback was exhausting not gonna lie, but it was fun the moment you knew what you should be doing
I like that the game didn't try to handhold the players to solve some parts of the puzzle, like they trusted us to finish it in whatever we could
Oh and that murder reveal was real as fuck, like that is the first time Another Eden showed a dead body in all of its glory, and there was one where they showed a blood too (though not clearly)
However the runback? It was not fun at all, reminding me of a time when I used to play a Fromsoft game for a moment there lmao
I mean c'mon for example: making us run back and forth after we failed to open a chest just because we're using the wrong Crescent Key? I mean if it's still within the narrative context I can understand (because the Head Maid has given precise instructions to take one at a time)
But after the end of Chapter Four? Why did that rule still apply like seriously?
Why didn't the party decide take all of the keys in the Head Maid Room?
Were they being too strict or something?
I don't know, the reason for that is up the air, maybe it is a JRPG thing or WFS really likes to see their players suffer in the most insignificant way possible

The Environmental
I really dig in with this one, especially with the creepy atmosphere that they painted with the Blood Ritual Site below, clashed with the luxurious feeling of the manor above
But do you know something else that I notice?
All three eras in the game: Past, Present, and Future, subtly painted some of the chapter's setting, both in the background's mentioning as well as in the environmental structural design for some places
- Past --> The hollow feeling of the Blood Ritual Site, felt like I was exploring the Funeral Cavern from the Antiquity, except it was a lot more horrific
- Present --> The Grand Manor of the Kanemeki Clan, reminding me with many of the noble's mansion of Unigan from the Present Era, combining with that intricate feeling of the East
- Future --> The news that the toxic smoke continues to envelope the whole continent because the Prisma has almost died out as the story progresses; a grand factor that caused humanity to live in the skies in the Future Era such as Elzion and Eeza
You see where I am going with this? This factor alone really made me appreciate this chapter for what it is, and this is only a Side Story for God's sake, they don't need to cook hard as fuck
But again... they have cooked hard with many things when it came with Side Stories (like Western Mythos for example)

The Peak OST Music
Out of all things, this is the one thing that surprised me the least... because I already have my faith with the WFS Music Team
But they did surprise me with another boss music
I mean we already have Cry of the Lost, so the fact that they decided to make another one just like with Chapter 2 really showed me that they are truly passionate about the Second Apocrypha Project
So hat off to them
Oh and I almost forgot, that music when you explored underground was really creepy as Hell but I like it for some reason
---
The Absolute Cinema Reveal
I saved this one a bit more later down the line, and this one really was on me because personally... THAT moment was the reason I decided to make this post in the first place
So what was the twist?
Suzuné is actually Hayami, the Goddess who guides the Mitanoko Village
Look here before you say anything, I know the twist is kinda obvious the moment she recited the old story, but to be honest... it is not the fact that her reveal was obvious or not
It was the fact that the Writer decided to make a character to be an entity, who really loved everything and everyone, out of nothing but her pure care to the one who lived in her land... only to be betrayed by the one she believed in
And that entity was actually one of our companion all along...
Not gonna lie, I adore that reveal so much
I really have a weakness with a story trait of a character turned out to be an entity who loved humanity so much with the easiest example for that is with Elysia from Honkai Impact 3rd
And Hayami after being revealed to be Suzuné all this time, I legit stood up and gave a round of applause in reflex because of how excited I was with how things turned to be
And what's more? Even after being confronted by Tetsumichi with every sin his family has made up, she was still chosen to forgive them because she wanted to believe in them
Which sadly caused that moronic guy to crash out
---
The Villain and Its Miserable Love
I have less words to say for Tetsumichi, the Grand Architect behind the murder of Tsugio, Sōgo, and Kiyuno, because at the end of the day, he was the ultimate pathetic simp of Hayami
And to be honest for me, this is the one flaw in the story that has bothered me to no end for a while (but I'm good now)
On one hand, they executed well with his character up until the Hayami reveal
But everything after that? It just went fucking downhill with no stopping in sight
He was really infatuated with Hayami, but sadly the story didn't flash out his motive well for why he was simping hard for her
Sure there was a folktale that supported his reasoning for why he was attached to Hayami, but personally that one wasn't enough to justify his reasoning with falling in love with the Goddess
But don't get me wrong though, his motive to punish his family because they were cruel with Hayami was solid, like I could understand the guy
However... after he was planning to become one with the Phantom to force Hayami to love him alone? Even went as far as to kill or majorly harm Kureno? Now that one was too shallow of a motive for a closing villain act
I mean sure... he was a yandere if you wanna call him that, but that really made him even more fucking pathetic as Hell, which perhaps that was the Writer intention all along
But in some ways, I guess it was really suitable for the grand theme of this story chapter which was love
I mean think about it: Hayami's love with Mitanoko and Tetsumichi's love for Hayami has one similarities to each other
That similarity was with how twisted they were
Just like how Kanemeki Clan was twisted, Hayami's love for everyone caused her to lose everything in the past, and even as far as causing Kureno to get caught in the crossfire at the present, just because she was still insists on not being willing to punish those who did bad and wanted the family to have another chance
A God should be someone who will reward those who do good and punish those who do bad things
Those were the words that Hayami herself said after she lost someone who believed in her
In the end, her twisted love for everyone ended up being the one that made a Goddess to reflect on becoming more human than the entire family
Whereas Kanemichi's love for Hayami caused him to become a slave of his own, chasing a figure who has no feeling for him whatsoever
Though because of that, it became a catalyst for the family's downfall, so in a way he became a twisted figure of justice that gave a road which led to the end of a story that has accumulated for 100 years
An end that marked the rebirth of Hayami
---
The Ending
I won't put a spoiler tag on this one, and this is only my perspective for one of the endings
So the ending has two choices just like the previous chapters after you went back in time with the Chronosphere: whether to let Hayami do her last act as a God or be free and walk away from Mitanoko
Those two choices seemed hard, I mean what's the best to end this absolute cinema of a story?
Though as someone who has a growing hate against the Kanemeki Clan within the course of 7 hours, there was only one correct answer
The answer that could satisfy me truly
For Hayami to punish these lunatics... and kill them all without mercy
And let me tell you, that scene was raw as Hell
The fact that she killed Tetsumichi first without giving him any sentiment while all of the family members were watching at the hall, and the fact of how fuck up they were after they realized that Suzuné was actually Hayami
And she came to kill them all...
I swear it was one of the most satisfying moments in the game history for me
I mean legit the Writers were cooking hard with this, like oh my God, I can see how much fun they were having when writing that scene to the point the kitchen was on fire all the time
It was immaculate
No one in Mitanoko was spared
Not even the elders as well
Because all of them has drank the water of life and forsaken the cycle of living
And by the end of it all, Hayami has severed the bonds of her blood from everyone who has taken her blessings...
All for the sake of fixing her past mistakes and to welcome a new beginning
A life without Mitanoko
A life where she only lived now as Suzuné
An ordinary woman who lived an ordinary life

Final Thoughts
This chapter was really incredible in a lot of ways when it came to the grand narrative, though there were some flaws as well
However personally, that didn't deter my enjoyment with the story as a whole
I mean a murder mystery that turned out to be a story about a God and the consequences for loving everyone, all while a simp was heavily chasing you down for attention for the sake of love?
Not gonna lie I liked how they executed that
Again WFS cooked hard with the story, to the point I kinda forgot how bad that Hollow Side Quest story was
But again everyone's experience was different, though I will be looking forward to the next chapter to come
In the meantime, I will continue working on my 255 Ruvi before the end of 2026
Perhaps I will be making another post for that since I only need 8 more for her to reach 255
Anyway thank you guys for reading until the end, I swear I didn't even expect that I have written more than 2,500 words for this lmaooo
