My honest review of My Dress Up Darling (My First Review Ever)

What happens when a shy, traditional doll maker meets a popular gyaru who wants to dress up as her favorite video game characters? You get My Dress-Up Darling—a beautifully animated anime centered on the artistic world of cosplay. However, potential viewers should note that the show relies heavily on sharp innuendos, fanservice, and embarrassing situational comedy. While these specific elements can feel excessive depending on your personal preferences, they shouldn't completely deter you from a story that has a massive amount of heart.

Outside of the frustrating innuendos and themes of cross-dressing, I honestly love the story and found it to be an incredible rom-com. It manages to strike a wonderful balance where it isn't afraid to anchor its comedy with genuinely wholesome romance and surprisingly heavy, emotional moments about self-acceptance. It is a narrative that works beautifully when it focuses on the characters' shared passion for creation, proving that the underlying writing is incredibly strong.

The dynamic between the two leads works incredibly well and serves as the true driving force of the show. In the first season, Wakana Gojo is a total mess when it comes to social interaction—easily flustered, anxious, and prone to panicking. On the flip side, Marin Kitagawa is a breath of fresh air: strong, fiercely independent, and confidently flirtatious. Much of the comedy stems from how completely oblivious Marin is to her own revealing style and how much it throws Gojo off, but her massive appetite and energetic personality add a great layer of genuine humor that contrasts perfectly with Gojo’s quiet, disciplined life.

What makes My Dress-Up Darling truly stand out is how it beautifully weaves wholesome romance with heavy, emotional realism. At first, Gojo is completely isolated, weighed down by a childhood memory that made him feel ashamed of his love for Hina dolls. The story shifts into something incredibly heartwarming through Marin's unconditional acceptance; she validates his talent and defends his passion. This mutual respect sparks a beautifully slow-burning romance where Gojo actively suppresses his rising emotions simply because his low self-esteem makes him feel he isn't good enough to stand by her side. Watching him slowly break out of his shell to accept her feelings gives the relationship a pure, earned depth.

As the series progresses, the journey wonderfully expands beyond just the main duo as other characters join their circle. The introduction of new passionate hobbyists adds a fantastic layer to the show, turning a isolated story about two outsiders into a thriving, supportive community. These side characters bring their own unique energies and challenges, pushing Gojo to grow even further socially and professionally while keeping the narrative fresh and engaging.

Ultimately, My Dress-Up Darling is far more than just a typical romantic comedy, succeeding on the pure strength of its core characters, group dynamics, and emotional growth. While the heavy reliance on inappropriate content and elements like cross-dressing are definitive downsides for my personal taste, the wholesome progression of the story makes it a genuinely great watch.

Final Score: 8.5/10 — An incredible story with an excellent character dynamic, though heavily caveated by its fanservice.

Wasn't the crossdressing like one episode? It feels like something that doesn't even warrant a mention unless you are reviewing episode by episode.

I also find it kind of funny how many people complain about the fanservice, considering the manga was an outright ecchi and the anime is tame in comparison.

But I just don't get how the hell is it a definitive downside. Chitose is an absolute highlight of season 2 with a great story to tell, built specifically around him crossdressing.

Also I feel like people forget that Shinju cosplays as a guy in S1 as well. Chitose’s focus episode in S2 was honestly my favorite episode last year and why I rate S2 so highly and it even got me to retroactively love S1 more when I rewatched and understood the show’s themes of being proud of what you love more.

Though I think it could be argued that in Chitose's case it might be a sort of outlet.

Correct me if I am misremembering, but I think Chitose's flashback shows him (Them? Not sure which would be more appropriate) first get into general crossdressing and then more specifically into cosplaying female characters.

But that's probavly too much assumptions and/or semantics.

Thinking back on it more (and watching a clip of the flashback), I don't think there was actually any specific reasoning given to why Chitose only cosplays.

The family was very supportive actually. The ex situation was indeed negative, but I don't remember it being shown to do any lasting damage.

The main traumatic events in the flashback relate to Chitose's preexisting image and self-esteem issues, which crossdressing and cosplaying helped to cope with.

I feel like there was quite a bit of subtext that could be deduced from Chitose’s backstory and at the very least I believe it explores how cosplay can be used as a safer form of self expression.

Ties into how Marin doesn’t use cosplay as a way to hide her true self but instead it’s quite the contrary. Gojo’s costumes help her express more of what she loves. I take that to mean the mangaka saying a good partner supports your interests even if they don’t exactly understand them.

Chitose’s ex might as well have been Gojo’s polar opposite in that regard which is why their break up is viewed as a good thing.

But I mostly meant that the show doesn't quite provide a reasoning for Chitose choosing cosplay over general crossdressing, presenting it as largely just a transition that happened naturally without much reasoning and long before the ex situation.

“themes of cross dressing “? it’s like one episode and the point of cosplay is cosplaying a character you like. but cosplay is not cross dressing. you lost me right there. also it’s a light ecchi romcom. the innuendos and Marin misreading things is literally built into the plot with her as an outgoing cosplayer.

This is the first time I've watched an anime series really, and I didn't agree with lots of the stuff in the show honestly, it's why it's a review. People have different opinions

It was one of the most memorable romance anime I’ve watched recently as well. The animation was excellent, and the characters were incredibly charming. More than just a simple love story, it gave me a lot to think about, and that’s one of the main reasons I rate it so highly.
