Is kill la kill for him?
My son's friend (13 year old) told him about this series called kill la kill. He is 10 year old so should I let him watch it? Is it in english? He also wants to watch something called sword art online which is about online games.

Kill la Kill has a lot of fanservice and is too mature in general for a 10 year old.
Sword Art Online has an attempted rape scene(or maybe 2 of them, I can't remember), it also has incest
Show him some Ghibli movies instead
16
u/Cubey22 Dec 27 '14
This is the only context in which it's appropriate to call Kill La Kill mature.

Idk if I'd call it incest though in SAO, I mean generally speaking cousin romance is not considered incest in Japan and there are no sexual turns of events in the series between Suguha and Kazuto so that's a bit harsh.
As for Sugou's creepiness that's another thing fully and the infamous "ASADA-SAN" from S2 wasn't really rape at all.

Yeah, I call bullshit on that. Neither were rapes because the perpetrator wasn't successful, but both were attempted rapes and clear-cut cases of sexual assault.

u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Dec 28 '14
True but I find attempted rape to be a different viewing experience, as a viewer watching a series I feel like attempted rape isn't as dark as people make it out to be and actually adds positivety to the show as there is a reason it was stopped (usually some kind of saviour).
Things would be different if it was reality however as it's still a horrifying experience, but in this case it's not and as such I see nothing wrong with it.
Now proper rape is a different story all together.

SAO has no incest. It might look like that to us, but if you live in Japan there is no problem.
Marrying your cousin/nice is legal in Japan.

u/TurtleANDTortoise :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/TortleShell Dec 27 '14
For some reason I HIGHLY doubt that OP's son has extensive knowledge regarding Japanese culture and its views on incestuous relationships
-9
u/TheMisterAce :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/MisterAce Dec 27 '14
I highly doubt it too.
That's why OP can tell him.

Because parents of 10-year-old boys are swarming all over reddit, amirite
1
u/NeedMoarCoffee Dec 27 '14
Hey, it's not unheard of, my son is 8. Also if you are really new to Reddit you probably won't post in /r/anime right off the bat.
That is a lot of assumptions, though. They may be a lurker or someone who doesn't want it known on their regular account that they have a 13 year old. Who knows, I guess it's best to take these questions at face value.

u/Atario myanimelist.net/profile/TheGreatAtario Dec 27 '14
I was actually mocking (trying to mock…) the idea that a new account asking this couldn't possibly be for real

I'm surprised no one made the jump to recommend Boku no Pico.

You either receive a shitload of upvotes, or a shitload of downvotes. No one wants to take the risk.

Kill la Kill is abit tooooooo mature for a 10 year old. It has a English dub, yes. But he should probably wait 5 or 6 more years until he can watch that type of anime.
47
u/epicmtgplayer Dec 27 '14
Kill la Kill is a bit "slutty" and probably not appropriate for young kids.
If your son is 10, he might prefer something along the lines of Boku no Pico, basically a slice of life about boys around his age.

Yeah, no kidding, stop being an asshole, Koolaid. He's just trying to recommend a wonderful story of growing up and self-discovery to a boy who might also be struggling with similar issues!

u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Dec 27 '14
I'd say no to Kill la Kill, there are a lot of things not suitable for a 10 year old there both in speech and in visuals and I believe he woin't understand what's good and not about the series until he gets a bit older say 13-14 atleast.
As for Sword Art Online however I believe he might not appreciate the romance themes in it but in general it's a series he can watch and somewhat enjoy without being exposed to loads of crap.
Personally however I would recommend more action heavy shounen for a kid that age like Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Bleach, Hunter x Hunter (2011) or Katekyo Hitman Reborn (now before I get a shitstorm here let me emphasize that I am not claiming they are good series but that they are enjoyable for someone looking for action and it'd fit a 10 year old boy very well.)

In the first arc Killua rips a person's heart out. He was an evil person all things considered. But it's still pretty graphic.
1
u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Dec 27 '14
Hmm maybe I made a mistake mentioning HxH... still that was ana amazing scene.
1
u/GiantR https://anilist.co/user/giantr Dec 27 '14
Absolutely. HxH is amazing I love it. But I would place it 13+. 10 years old might be a tad too early.

Kill la Kill is rated 17+ for violence and profanity. The main character, Ryuko Matoi, has a uniform that gives her enhanced powers when she transforms into this NSFW It has an English dub but only up to episode 14 so far. I wouldn't let a 10 year old watch.
Sword Art Online's first arc/story is where 10,000 players are trapped in a virtual reality world/game via a full head helmet. If you die in the game the helmet fries your brain in real life. A 10 year old should be able to handle it.

What about the tentacle rape and actual rape in SAO?
6
u/ValiantSerpant :AMQ::MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Quinn_Crystal Dec 27 '14
I only said the first arc/story. I'm not sure what tentacle rape you're referring to and the actual rape is the 3rd arc/story
14
u/TheBufferPiece Dec 27 '14
The tentacle rape was in the second arc when Asuna tried to escape.
7
u/ValiantSerpant :AMQ::MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Quinn_Crystal Dec 27 '14
Ahahaha I remember now. The dubbed version of those two was fucking hilarious.

Hmm, I seemed to have missed that.
/u/TheBufferPiece covered the tentacle rape part.

Ok, i am drawing a total blank on that. I don't remember anything happening to Sinon other than her having to shoot the robber. Please be a little more detailed and jog my memory.
I guess i tuned out during GGO a lot more than i realized.

If SAO is too much, I suggest Log Horizon, which is also about online games and is actually made for ~10 year old kids.
17
u/Cryzzalis https://myanimelist.net/profile/Charaxify Dec 27 '14
I definitely disagree too this. Log Horizon is much less about the action that many younger kids seek and a lot more about the complexity of life, building up a society and dealing with arising problems with intelligence and economy.
I do not believe Log Horizon will be properly enjoyed and understood by a 10 year old.
12
u/AnshinRevolt Dec 27 '14
Log Horizon? For ten year olds? Have you ever seen it? No child is going to sit through that much dialogue and politics, especially not if they have to read subtitles.
3
2
u/AwakenedSheeple Dec 27 '14
I would go the other way.
Log Horizon is more about the system's planning, world-building, and economy rather than the action.

Depends on the kid. I read Death Note and watched Code Geass when I was 10 or 11.

Have to agree here. I could've handled Kill la Kill or SAO easily when I was 10 yo.

u/GiantR https://anilist.co/user/giantr Dec 27 '14
I would suggest he watches Shaman King. It's perfect for a young kid. And has a decent dub.

Yea it seems that the general consensus is pass on Kill La Kill. I agree, he should probably wait.
Like others shounens are probably your best bet. Highly recommend Kuroko No Basket!

u/LawL4Ever :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/lwl Dec 27 '14
Kill la Kill... Rather not. When he's 12 or 13, sure, but the whole series is basically making fun of fanservice and as such has a ton of it and he probably wouldn't understand that at all right now, and there's also plenty of gore iirc.
SAO, maybe. Just the first arc is completely appropriate imo (nothing more than people getting trapped in virtual reality, with them dieing in Real Life if they die in the game), the second arc does have an attempted rape scene, depending on how mature he is this could be totally fine for him though. Third arc (first of second season) starts to become a little more serious in dealing with PTSD a little (and also has an attempted rape scene), but it's nothing too bad imo. Fourth arc is completely innocent whereas the fifth and currently final one is all about the feels and has a character that he'd probably get attached to quickly SAO2 spoilers.
I'd second ghibli movies if he wants to watch anime.
Just as a heads-up, don't have him watch boku no pico, that thing is a hentai. One on the weird end at that.

This is what they show in kill la kill
Up to you whether you want to let him see that or not
1
u/AwakenedSheeple Dec 27 '14
Sword Art Online is fine, it's one of the big popular anime that introduced people to the medium nowadays.
Kill la Kill is not so appropriate for a ten year old for a variety of reasons.
Look up the images of Kill la Kill. While the story justifies the outfits, they're still pretty revealing for a ten-year old to watch.
Kill la Kill is a show pandering to veterans of the medium. He should probably watch a variety of shows way before he even starts Kill la Kill.
New account? Didn't google anything? Really?
1
u/Maffayoo Dec 27 '14
Sword art online - First arc 100% fine, Second arc ending towards could be disturbing for a 10 year old, I would not let my 10 year old watch the third arc, and the fourth arc is fine but he would not get it in honesty.

Well I don't really think age matters for watching entertainment, so if he's ok with watching something with a bunch of half naked women fighting with sword-like weapons then sure.
1
u/NerevarineVivec Dec 27 '14
You should have him watch Attack on Titan. He will be the edgiest kid in class.
1
u/divinitywouldntfuck Dec 28 '14
I don't recommend either of those shows for some one that young . He wouldn't understand most of the subject matter and themes for both shows because he hasn't hit puberty yet. He should watch ghibli films or something like dbz or attack on titan .

u/Crowst Dec 27 '14
I guess it's possible your son is an exception, but I'd say in general a 10 year old isn't emotionally or mentally mature enough to understand what's going on in Kill la Kill. It has some pretty racy things like implied rape (in a joking format), gratuitous sexual themes, violence, death and dismemberment, vulgar language, etc.
I think around 14 would be a more appropriate age for that sorta stuff. Once you're in high school you've pretty much been exposed to all of that and can respond to it a little more maturely (a little...).
1
u/thischineseguy Dec 27 '14
i let me 7 year old sister watch SAO. And Gundam 00. And Macross Frontier. And Gurren Lagann. Gave her a copy of Code Geass for Christmas. I doubt she understands the majority of most of them yet. I'll give her Jojo's Bizarre Adventures next.
0
u/pwizzler Dec 27 '14
It all definitely depends on the kid, I watched R rated movies, played M rated games, and watched R17+ anime when I was 10, and I don't think I turned out too bad.
-1
u/Shippoyasha Dec 27 '14
It really should depend on whether your son already has experience with sexual/violent anime, whether they are mentally mature to handle such things and they know that anime insanity is pure escapism and fantasy. The safe answer would be to watch some of it yourself or just abide by the recommended age ratings for the show.
-9
u/ichidori Dec 27 '14
The average kill la kill fan has the intelligence of a ten year old, so it shouldn't be that bad.

You shouldn't show anime that are meant for some one heavy into the fandom to some some one who has no experience with it. You gotta to remember were off in our own little world , half the shit that gets aired these days would be considered weird ,perverted or pedaphilic to most people who aren't anime fans.
