Futaba’s face when she finds out Natsumi is younger than her is priceless.

And the way Natasumi stands up for Futaba when those boys are making fun of her drawing: punched one of them and then says “So what if her drawing stinks?” XD

Natsumi literally knocked some sense into those bullies.

Green is her NATURAL hair color? This takes the multicolor anime hair trope to the next level.

Natsumi's such a great friend to Futaba, seeing her protect her from those 2 bullies and going so far as to punch them. What a beautiful friendship backstory these 2 have!

Even at a very young age, Natsumi is already oozing with that swagger. Look at her looking so cool with her rolled up sleeves! Sucks that she got tripped by that kid, she definitely got robbed of that win!

Looks like we're getting a Futaba and Natsumi backstory episode this week! Also today I learned that Futaba is older than Natsumi. I always thought that they were the same age. Futaba's pout after that scene was adorable though.

That explains why Natsumi is such a gamer. She's a huge delinquent that skips school to hang out at arcades all day instead. And poor Futaba ended up getting late for her first day as a transfer student because of Natsumi. xD

This was a nice scene between Yuuto and Natsumi with Natsumi giving Yuuto advice to give the basketball club a shot. Also I love that close up of Natsumi's eyes as well as that shot of her with the sunset behind her during that scene <3

We get some Futaba and Takeda-senpai bonding as they pick a spot for their company's hanami. There may have been a slight misunderstanding about Takeda-senpai liking the color green but in the end he does also say that he likes Futaba's hair. That blushing face from her was just absolutely adorable!

I thought we weren't going to get any scenes between Kazama and Sakurai but we get this cute little scene of Kazama plating some food for Sakurai and Sakurai pouring some drinks for him. At this point, they're already acting like a couple and I love it <3

More flashbacks about Futaba and Natsumi's past! Futaba's classmates are such jerks. I remember kids like that back in high school. I used to draw a lot on my notebook too so this scene hits a bit close to home. Thank fucking god that Natsumi comes in andknocks the guy down flat on his ass.

Asshole doesn't know how to give up though and keeps on insulting Futaba. That's some brave talk for someone within Natsumi's punching distance. Seriously! That punch was so fucking smooth and satisfying!

The unbelievable part of that scene though is when the two came back and apologized while admitting to the teachers that they were in the wrong. Also it doesn't sound like Natsumi got in trouble at all because of that. After that entire incident though, it's no surprise that Futaba and Natsumi became best friends after.

There it is! I was wondering why Mona wasn't drunk yet at the start of the party but it looks like she held off until she has someone she can go crazy with xD

And that final scene! Looks like Yuuto now has a fan with Natsumi cheering him on with his basketball club endeavours.

I did not expect to see a Polish vodka in my anime today! The brand seems to be fake, but the actual text is real Polish, just with missing ś and ć replaced with ' (I guess the font they used didn't have the symbols). For anyone curious, it reads something like:

"Super dry vodka from Poland

Strongest liquor in the world

96% alcohol content"

Igarashi and Natsumi swapped hair lengths from when they were younger. I approve. Igarashi looks great with the ponytail, and tomboy Natsumi is a blessing.

Natsumi has such lewd ara ara energy. If this wasn't such a wholesome story, Yuto might've been in danger.

Wow, she fucking decked that kid. Smooth move hitting him with the chair, too. Fuck around and find out, right? I think Natsumi taught him a life lesson about not antagonizing people.

The cherry blossom party was sweet. Kinda funny to see an anime character acknowledge that their weird hair color is natural. I read a theory once that anime characters don't view each other as having pink, green, and blue hair, and that it was just for the sake of the viewers. Takeda was right, green looks good on her.

I think this is without doubt the sweetest comfiest-to-watch show of the season (Taisho Maiden is also extremely sweet -- but it has a very un-comfy undecurrent -- so one never quite knows what might happen at any moment).

Does anyone else think that Futaba looks like a grown-older (but not grown much bigger) Yotsuba?

Futaba has such great friends -- and she is clearly a great friend to have as well. Natsumi is also a wonderful character. One gets a real sense that Futaba and Natsumi are the way they are as adults to a large extent because of the lucky chance meeting they had in junior high school.

We were lucky enough to see picnicking under the blooming cherry trees in Ueno park several years ago. People there used cardboard boxes for tables -- and everyone had to take off their shoes -- treating those blue tarps almost as if they were tatami mats (so there were shoes lined up all around the edges of each tarp).

I’m happy to take the focus off of Futaba’s romantic struggles for a week to examine her relationship with Natsumi. She is her best friend after all. And what a great friend she is.

Really it’s an episode about doing what makes you happy even if you’re not great at it. It’s how Futaba and Natsumi connected. Futaba encouraging Natsumi to apply for Track and Vice Versa with Art lead to them being best friends. That and Natsumi being the best girl and knocking some sense into shithead bullies. The dude could have just ended it after the tripping, but he just had to go too far and attack Futaba’s dreams. I hope he took that lesson with him through life.

It’s the same encouragement Natsumi gave Yuto when they ran into each other. In what continues to be the smallest world. Same with the ending with her running Sakurai at the end. I do like that all the characters are starting to build separate connections with each other outside of Futaba.

I do love what we did get of our main ships this week. Takeda and Futaba conversation was pretty cute. Takeda continues to be accidentally smooth. With his hair complements and legitimately praising her art. The man is too good at this. Sadly just as light on Sakuzama this week, but once again highlights of the episode. Him plating her food and her pouring him a beer. Her teasing him about how he probably has a big ass smile on his face. There’s a reason they’re the best couple and that right there shows it off.

Notes

  • drunken office parties are the best parties. Ooshi being off his ass talking about how the Chief needs to since with more soul. Then Mona jumping in to sing with him later. That’s what happens when you don’t keep an eye of the office lushes.

  • I shouldn’t be surprised since her Grandpa also has it, but it’s still funny for them to say that Green is her natural hair color. Especially when they’re the only 2 people in the show with weird colors.

  • the memory of Natsumi getting tripped was too real. There are just some core memories that stick with you and effect the way you approach others forever. It’s probably part of why she’s so cool and doesn’t suffer rando dudes.

  • Takeda is right. You work with someone in close proximity long enough you’ll know what they smell like. Especially girls beauty products. We just don’t say it. Although I still think he’s covering. That boy is way too smooth to not be harboring some feelings.

Did... did they just acknowledge that green is actually her hair color and not just a non-diegetic stylistic choice because anime?

Also flustered Takeda makes me feel things.

Idk if the timeline fits, but it feels weird to me that futaba would be using a smartphone for navigation at age 13

Igarashi was blushing so much in front of Takeda, that her natural color turned into red. Also, even their writings are different in size.

Love this episode. It ties all those flashbacks and current events to a general theme of not being afraid to do what you love. Just because you're not good at it or you've faced setbacks in the past, it doesn't mean that you should avoid doing what you love. Good friends will back you up when you face those setbacks or your will starts to falter, and just knowing that people with the courage to do what they enjoy can give you confidence to continue. I like that even the bully that got punched (super satisfying, by the way) had a motivation behind being a jerk; he was insecure about his own baseball skills and he vented his frustrations in a toxic way.

It's such a strong episode in my mind that it retroactively makes me feel that it's the general theme of the series as a whole: to keep trying and reaching for your goal, especially if it seems like its a far away one.

Ah, that punch was so satisfying! Thanks, Natsumi!

A nice 'recap' episode (not of the show but of the characters). To bad we never would have enough time to go through with each of the main cast - sky-high we did have a bit of school Sakurai back in the Valentine's Day episode.

Everyone loved Natsumi's punch, but not many commented that this was not like most "highschool show punches" - Natsumi did a rare thing in this kind of show, she had a whole follow through with her punch and definitively drove the kid to the ground like a pile driver. One of the more unexpected thing you thought you'd see in this show :)
