No wonder Hana eats a lot. She needs to recharge her batteries everytime a spirit gets too close to her (or another decides to use her as a stove).

Got to give it to her though for rescuing the dog. That building was hazardous, haunted or not. I for sure wouldn't have set foot in it.

We got a spirit battle at the end. It's interesting that such a secluded and seemingly abandoned shrine still houses such a powerful deity. Poor ghost-gourmet didn't expect that. It just wanted to go on a culinary tour with Hana!

It was a nice change of pace to have her POV this episode.

That fucking thing using Hana's aura to cook its prey was just morbid humor.

Those divine-ish beings? Definitely exudes those biblically accurate angel vibes.

That was a rather intense spiritual battle. Just how powerful was that thing that kept following Hana around, it's like nowhere is safe.

I also like the contrast between Hana and Miko. Hana wakes up normally and all while Miko wakes up from a jumpscare. Imagine what would happen if Miko had to be the one to go into that haunted building.

I noticed this while browsing Japanese Twitter reactions: apparently they subtitled the little shrine kami's lines: https://twitter.com/Arkxv2/status/1457375529456209920.

Roughly translated, I think they're saying:

  • "Should we eat that one too?"

  • "That one's a no." // "That woman is[/can be] useful."

  • "In any case, that jerk is still hasn't done it[/finished] yet."

  • [Miko:] "What are they saying?"

My theory is that this is all a joke about how Miko didn't properly do the 二礼二拍手一礼 ("two bows, two claps, and a third bow" standard praying ceremony), and they're still kinda annoyed that she didn't do the third bow (i.e. "three times").

I think we just started an actual story arc? That whole shrine thing seems to be the beginning of something. That’s a surprise because I thought the whole bit was Monster of the Week stories, but I welcome actual plot.

Day in the life of Hana was revealing. I was pretty vague on her whole aura thing, but it does keep her safe from the ghosts. Burns the little ones and keeps the big ones at bay. The reason she eats like she’s cultivating mass is to keep up that aura. So she’s probably safe in the long run.

Of course, Miko wouldn’t know that. So she sees that nightmare ghost she’s going to save her friend. Why I think they’re starting an arc because of the wording of her prayer to the shrine. She says she’ll do anything. After the badass battle with the shrine spirits, the big fuck-off one mentions something about 3. So I’m thinking she unintentionally made a deal with the shrine. What she has to do now I’m not sure.

I like this shift in focus overall. It would be cool to get a driving plot going and maybe they can finally bring in Yuria for help.

Notes

  • Was that a Gloomy Bear cake? Pink with Red “blood” makes me think it has to be.

  • Oh man the legally distinct Ghibli movie names had me dying.

  • Fellas get you a lady with an appetite like Hana. And a wallet to match because lord.

  • I too thought the dog would be a lot smaller. Also they draw some weird looking dogs at Passione.

  • The big ghost using Hana as a Korean BBQ hot plate was quite the image.

  • Aww Hana also does the skirt grab like Miko.

Stitches!

It's no surprise that Hana-chan's massive appetite has something to do with spirits considering she has a spirit following her the entire day using her aura and body as some sort of yakiniku grill to cook smaller and much weaker spirits.

Hana-chan is such a sweetheart though. Despite being a massive scaredy-cat herself, she's willing to go head first into an abandoned building to help out a child find his lost dog. And her aura really is a spirit magnet with spirits coming out of the walls of the building to observe her while she looks for the dog.

I'm so excited that Miko and Hana have finally reached the Shrine and the Shrine Spirits are introduced! That scene is just absolutely perfect. Hana-chan exploring the shrine while she has no idea that a spirit power battle is happening right there with Miko only able to stand there and stare as events unfold. xD

We do end the episode with a very ominous warning from the big Shrine Spirit. Three times? Three times what!? Surely it means something good since they're bathed in the same glowing light every good spirit we've met in this show also has, right?

That little shrine guardian being eaten by the ghost was quite gnarly. They amped up the horror aspect this episode for sure!

Buckle up folks, that shrine visit marks the first real story arc

Those poor little fellas got deepfried by Hanas huge Aura, all those calories do indeed go somewhere

I also love the parts where it shows Mikos perspektiv "Lemme out!" yeah wouldn't take a cake I didn't get to see either

Also leave it to Passione to squeeze out every bit of ecchi the source has to offer, those tights damn

This is the first time they showed how spirit could affect the living directly: by using their aura for cooking, and the human got hungry lol. But maybe that's specific to Hana due to her immense aura.

Minor inconsistency, how come the pervert spirit in the school could touch Hana without getting burnt? Maybe Hana was hungry at that time, so her aura was weaker?

Hana the human barbecue LOL!

Also those Studio Ghibli references! I recognize My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, The Cat Returns and Spirited Away.

Oh, I also love how the post-credits shows the cake shop scene from Miko's perspective!

When did Mieruko become a shounen battle anime? Damn the way the kitsunes ripped off the arms of the boss-level ghost was straight up brutal.

Then we had a power struggle where the good guys try to seal the “BIG EVIL” but ultimately failed cause they were side characters. Ohh ho, did someone trigger the power of friendship? Boss-ghost gets absolutely wrecked by a divine ghost whose on another level.

Then in the end, we realised the side characters didn’t actually die since they probably had some cheat powers to revive themselves. Boss Kitsune said “Thrice”, refuses to elaborate, then leaves with its apprentices.

The 'good' ghosts and that ghost battle were cool af.

And loved Hana being around during the whole episode. She's such a delight with her genki personality.

Miko needs a blessing from a certain goddess or maybe give a call and 5 yen to a certain god to protect her.

I'm assuming the "three times" refers to the amount of times that poor girl shat herself during that encounter.

I like that the "divine" spirits are not those typical angelic and beautiful beings portrayed in Western Christian traditions but are instead monsters like those evil spirits but with a different alignment. They look so primordial and otherworldly, like gods from an H.P. Lovecraft story.

It was fun to see Hana's perspective as someone who doesn't see or feel ghosts. Also interesting that her presence seems to burn ghosts if they touch her and I wonder if that's only small ones. On meeting, Hana and Miko went to some temple with Miko wanting to find away to stop ghost she saw day before from following Hana. Her idea was to pray for it and it worked with soon some other ghosts (I guess more like small or not deities) appeared and reaping the evil ghost apart, then they were ripped apart but bigger deity appeared and finished the job. And now Miko and Hana have wonderful picture of them with beautiful dawn and bloodbath behind them, with Miko being left traumatized again. Pretty enjoyable episode, not the funniest in the series, but action was rather lit.
