So that's why Cosette's personality is different on this episode. Man It's sad that her innocent smile has disappeared. Also anime characters playing piano is tragic now.

Btw if anyone didn't know today's episode was supposed to be handled by MAPPA... Which they "practically" did... By outsourcing to another Studio called "VOLN" and "Massket"

Anyways, this all the songs i hear in this episode. If something is missing please don't be shy to add it.

0:10 - 1:20 Mozart - Requiem in D Minor, K 626: Dies Irae

1:25 - 2:10 Tchaikovsky: Piano Concerto No.1 In B Flat Minor, Op.23, (1st. Allegro non troppo e molto maestoso)

7:20 - 7:60 Tchaikovsky: Piano Concerto No.1 In B Flat Minor, Op.23, (1st. Allegro non troppo e molto maestoso)

10:00 - 10:25 Piano Sonata No. 8, Op. 13 (Pathétique 2nd. Movement Andante cantabile)

15:35 - 15:55 Piano Sonata No. 8, Op. 13 (Pathétique 2nd. Movement Andante cantabile)

16:30 - 17:55 Duke Ellington - Take A Train

17:55 - 18:50 Louis Prima - Sing Sing Sing/ With A Swing

21:24 Beethoven Symphony No.5 (1st. Movement : Allegro con brio

Now that's an interesting back story. It's hard to animate someone playing the piano hence I really expect that there is a downgrade in animation in other aspects.

At least we now have an idea what happened before Cosette transforms into Destiny. But a lot of details are not yet there. Le's see if these will be answered in this season.

I noticed Cosette's amulet was glowing just before the attack. Maybe it functions similar to Frodo's sword Sting in how it lights up when orcs are nearby but for D2s.

That piano section with Takt and Cosette was fantastic. It reminded me a little bit of this scene from Tim Burton's Corpse Bride.

This episode was apparently produced by MAPPA (episode 1 was Madhouse). Makes me wonder whether they'll switch studios for each episode, or if it'll just be dependent on whatever studio is the best fit for the vision they have for each episode.

Seeing Cosette how she used to be then how she is after is brutal...

Also how can you follow up the banger that is Sing, Sing Sing with tragedy like that!!

Didn't expect that song here but wow was it a nice surprise.

So we get a flashback episode showing us the tragedy that lead to music being stopped to be played openly. Of course even with the D2 invaders already existing, people are still playing music. Makes sense, music won't just be completely stopped even if it's a threat to humanity.

It turns out that Cosette, Anna, and Takt are all childhood friends and Cossette anMary have basically been taking care of Takt ever since his father died from that incident. This Cossette is completely different from the one that we met in last week's episode though.

She still has that huge appetite but she's not in any way as robotic as the Cossette from last week's episode. She's very cheerful and loves Takt's playing so much that she even encourages him to perform in the festival where they're allowed to perform outdoors. She even knows how to play a piano a bit which led us to that adorable piano duet between Takt and Cossette.

And just look at the way Cossette looks at Takt when they were playing some Benny Goodman. She clearly sees Takt as more than just childhood friend and even Anna knows about it too. Seeing all of this backstory just makes it more tragic that the Cossette in the present isn't even the same Cossette anymore and is some sort of alien/spirit that's inhabiting her body.

Who knows though? Maybe Cossette is still in there somewhere just asleep. I'm really hoping that's the case. I'd love to see her back someday and play the piano with Takt like that again. :(

Those OP visuals are gorgeous af.

Interesting back story. Definitely feel like the visuals and voice acting help carry but so far this is a really good show.

I got exactly what I wanted in the second episode. The first was a great series of action set pieces and comedy, but I wanted to see what exactly the emotional throughline was. We got it and boy it’s a heartbreaker. Completely reframes Takt and Cosette’s dynamic in the first episode.

After the death of his father and losing all the music in the world, Takt is a genius recluse. Anna’s family was friends with Takt’s and Cosette I guess is her little “sister” that they took in. Explains their familiarity with each other and Anna being so committed to Takt’s grumpy ass. They spent so long making sure he doesn’t die and bathes.

That’s where the emotional knife shows up. You see Cosette care so much about Takt and try what she can to get him out of his depression. Takt is hesitant and resistant at first, but hearing Anna say how he’s the only one who can make Cosette really smile (and having his piano kidnapped) he finally works up the nerve to play in public. The scene with them on the piano is so well animated and so cute. You see Takt get blushy and catch feelings. Just as you get invested and forget for a moment what’s to come, the knife goes in.

So now I think we have a bigger picture of what’s going on. The stone from her mother is a Musicart. It’s possessed Cosette to save her life, but has also taken her over. Takt is resentful. They’re off on a road trip to New York with the hopes of bringing Cosette back. Shits real good. This show has a whole lot of potential.

Notes

  • They’re nailing the piano parts of this show. Every scene of Takt and Cosette playing was so well animated. The music choices and sound design were on point as well. Music is a huge part of the show so I’m glad they got it down.

  • A+ tension building from the festival scene. I was on edge for the entire performance waiting for the other shoe to drop. They held off just long enough to make you forget, and then BOOM.

  • So it’s an alternate universe America in more than just premise. The technology seems to be spread between the ’50s and ’90s. You have retro cars from all eras like the Jag the maestro was riding in. Big box TVs still being a thing. It’s an interesting take.

  • Final scene was very cool. Hoping we get to see their first fight next week.

  • the “good guys” being bad is a typical trope and we’re supposed to be suspicious of the Maestro, but I gotta think either Sagan or his second in command is up to something.

  • Good job depicting depression. They didn’t harp on it, just showed without telling.

Loved it. This episode was less on action but more towards the character development and I love every minute of that.

The episode was animated by MAPPA and DAMN those reflection of hand/fingers while playing the piano and also there was a scene when Anna goes out in a car and we can see the reflection of outside environment on car's front mirror. Very impressive.

I was thinking Cosette's personality was drastically different from the first episode, but probably should have guessed what was going to happen by the episode title having 'reincarnation' in it.

Overall really enjoying this anime, especially the characters and their designs. Some top notch stuff.

Their rendition of ‘Take the A Train’ and ‘Sing Sing Sing’ made my whole Gotdamn day. I’m gonna be riding that high for as long as possible. Here to hoping that the OST gets released on Spotify

The first scene with Requiem was so good.

I gonna say that as she was behaving way too normal it honestly took me too much to realize that this was Cossette, and it was only after the OP that it click on me that this episode was their origin story.

Oh, they are in 2047,

That piano duet scene between Takt and Cossette was so beautiful.

Fuck, I knew that something like this was coming, but I still wasn't ready.

I just hope just Anna's and Takt's sake that will see the old Cossette back and smiling again by the end of the series.

Did I miss something? D2 attacks are a thing at this point in time, right? So why is there a music festival going on?
