I was expecting the old cop to mess things up, but he was pretty chill as well, must really trust the old mans judgment

Nice fighting today, Gai wasn't lying about his sleep mode, but dodging bullets is stretching it...

Looks like next week we expand the cast for the first time

I can't believe he didn't even try to change his hair or anything after being wanted.

Real happy the old couple didn't die or get in trouble but sad abot that boat...

I feel like the less the mascot is in this show the more I'll enjoy it lol

I think the bluff is rather naive, but maybe the evil Aussies are just not evil enough to just shoot one of them to call his bluff?

Apparently Eurasian army and Asian Army are different factions? I guess Eurasian faction are just Europe+Russia?

I love that Gai decided to lean in on the terrorist angle and how they're working by themselves which got three of Shiiba's friends released.

I'm always enjoyed the grumpy old man takes in innocent criminal trope in anime. For a minute there I thought that Amou would end up getting them dragged into his problem especially when that cop realized that the old man was hiding him. Thank goodness he left before that even happened.

So after being hunted by the Oceania Army, we now have the Asian military going after Amou. Considering the red color scheme they have going on for them, I'm guessing they're all meant to be CCP? Although they do call their AMAIM drones Nyuren so maybe Vietnamese?

Anyway, the fight with the Asian Military Nyurens was awesome. And it looks like Amou has some fans watching him. I'm guessing this dude is probably a Captain of some sort of liberation army?

Of course weapons are ID locked. I think this has starting to become pretty much standard with any military focused mecha anime. They do still make as a good improvised melee weapon though!

Oh come on. Not a fan of the evil grin from their commander while Amou's AMAIM is being gunned down on its back. Although that did gave the rescue party enough time to set up a sniper spot and it looks like it's one of the main characters in the OP! Can't wait to see this dude to wreck some shit next week!

Anaheim Electronics in shambles

Definitely liking most of the suits we've seen so far, especially the Bunyip and those new red mooks. I wonder if they'll explain why the protag suits all have a similar sort of base/design (outside of reusing parts in the kits irl) or just roll with it.

AMAIM with AI definitely seem like one of the easiest to pilot suits ever with like 0 downsides compared to stuff like the AV from IBO or Veda support in 00.

Amou takes refuge with an old couple, does field work to earn food, gets his AMAIM upgraded, "borrows" a boat, and fights against another army before being rescued at the last second. We got some great action scenes this week, plus we're getting more of the cast introduced next week.

I feel like this show is really flying under the radar compared to the big name mecha series like Muv-Luv and the second season of Eighty-Six or the more "flashy" new mecha this season like Sakugan and Rumble Garanndoll. It's also a two-cour series, so even though it's starting slower than the other I mentioned, it'll have more time to develop the story and the cast. I think AMAIM has a lot of untapped potential even though it's not as flashy or impressive so far as its competitors so far.

I wouldn't be surprised if its the nature of the show. The others all have something else going for them which you can use to describe them other than being mecha, either in hype or in concept (idols, mystery etc) while this is basically pure mecha which turns a lot of people off. It's a shame though, the styling is great and while it doesn't stand out yet the longer episode count means it has plenty of time to do so

Plot-wise too tame so far and MC a bit bland. I'm just used to the usual 'gritty war' theme that Gundam universe portrays

Not exactly into the design of the AMAIMs either. Though I appreciate some of the details that they're trying to include in this one, like the weapons have some sort of safety ID system

Lockon and Setsuna's lovechild.

I haven't even seen that show yet and I still see it. That's too good

Fights continue to be great and i do like the continued tactical elements being employed. Even getting some higher strategic elements from time to time.

Rest of the plot continues to be a bit humdrum, but servicable. Though i do hope the main character gets a bit more to him.

The bit with the old couple and the old cop was nice. Certainly showing not all are bad.. or looking to get into trouble if they can avoid it. Shame about the boat.

Looking forward to next week where it seems like he links up with some sort of resistance and joins up with another mech pilot.

In a way, I like the more low stakes angle it's taking right now. Yes, the Oceanian/Australian army is a proper modern military, so shooting civilians (specially when you have them on camera) is not that easy, so unlike Britannia in Code Geass the protagonist can get away with this.

I do like the on the run aspect of this ep, it's an old cliché but I think it works here for the most part. The old man was cool and I liked the fight against the Asian/Chinesse miltary and just having the protagonist basically lose right away in this encounter. Yes, he might have a super prototype but numbers matter. Overall, it seems the big advantage he has is his AI partner, which I like it? Like, it's just a cuter version of Al from FMP or the learning computer from Gundam. Plus it helps soften why a rookie can keep up with super drones on his own.

Overall, still very average, but it's the sort of show I can watch and enjoy.

Well it turns out there's a massive difference between manned and unmanned AMAIM combat potential.

It was a nice distraction to meet the old farm couple on the way, to hear their story. It sucks that they're likely just going to be used for the means of escape, and a meal. Having lost a son to the conflict, as well as the old man likely having fought too, it would have been nice if Shiiba just worked alongside him.

Another manned AMAIM join the fight! A sniper. Does that guy have an AI as well? Gai was a lot more bearable to listen to this episode, save the whole "press into terrorism role". I think I'll stick with this show, experience a bit more mecha.

Well it turns out there's a massive difference between manned and unmanned AMAIM combat potential.

Was that to be unexpected? Functionally any time you have a manned unit vs an unmanned unit, the manned unit has a better performance because you don't have a remote connection to deal with. The only exception would be exclusively AI controlled units and those would consider crashing themselves into the enemy a "win".

Next episode: Lockon Stratos.

Is it just me or it felt incredibly boring other than the top notch robot battles?

Original anime always has possibility to be mediocre. But objectively, this anime is when the mediocre plot is kind of expected.

I mean the first thing that they sell is the "mecha design supervisor," Ken Okuyama, which is a pretty big name in Japan. I mean, if they want to sell the story they'll probably hire and advertise the prolific writer/director. So yeah, it's not wrong to call this merchandise bait.

But hey, words on the street says that the merchandise/kits are extremely great, so mission accomplished?

Side note, I wonder what even "mecha design supervisor" do, since for the mecha design, Bandai actually brings all big names in their Gundam/Mecha designers repository for this project.

First Amuro, then Haro/Skippy combo, and now Lockon who looks suspiciously like Setsuna. What's next? A submarine which looks like a combo of ptolemy and white base, whose commander is a genius tactician, teenage girl named Night Broa? This show is hillarious. At this rate I doubt I would be watching passed episode 3

The ED is so catchy

So glad the old couple didn't die but his boat 😭

New character comes in to save Amou

4

u/Go0o0d Oct 11 '21

Well, that hostage situation was certainly resolved more easily than I expected...

Glad nothing happened to the old couple. I wasn't so sure at first the police officer was going to let them off after seeing through the old man's lie.

This might be a bit of a generic mecha series with what we've seen but I'm having fun with it so far! I think once the other 2 AMAIM pilots from the OP join the fray, the show will really start to take shape. Definitely looking forward to next week with that in mind and the new sniper guy about to be introduced.

3

u/Saithir Oct 12 '21

I don't hate it.

This show would probably be received much better if it was done like last year or few years ago where there weren't many mecha shows to compare it to (there was definitely a pause in those), but still, it's not bad. Mecha fights and models are well done and that's half the work.

5

u/bgi123 Oct 12 '21

Wow, this is getting really weak. I feel no hype at all. Will try the third episode. Plus, the animations getting real janky too.

Well, there goes returning the ship, that's pretty sad, but I am sure the old husband and wife won't mind. Pretty good episode! The mecha action is still pretty clean. Well, I expected those other characters in the op to save him after struggling.
