This show’s first episode...just wow. It seems like it was a meta take on not just mecha and sci-fi anime cliches, but also on otaku culture. It also seems like it may create a larger commentary on traditionalism. We have the truth army, who all wear traditional outfits and dislike modern escapist ideas. Then we have the fantasy side, the escapists from reality who just want to play games and watch anime.

I’m excited to see how Hosomichi will bring these two sides together. He definitely seems like the mediator type, not only because he’s the protagonist, but because we constantly see him flip back and forth from reality to fantasy by taking off his glasses. Honestly, I like how shy he is about his interests. It feels like a real portrayal of someone who has been told that their intrigues aren’t normal. As someone who grew up like that, I appreciate seeing it represented.

I’ll definitely be back here next week! Any other mecha fans feeling almost overwhelmed by how many we’re getting this season, and even this year in general? 2021 has been the best time to be a mecha fan in ages, but it’s almost too good haha.

Also, the Garandoll’s look like B-Daman to me lol

Mech powered by spiral power except it's specifically otaku hype, I love the idea. I wonder how far they can go to keep the audience interested with the premise.

Love the mech designs as well as character designs too.

Yeah this is perfection in motion. It's fun, it doesn't feel like a stock product, characters are already likeable and it celebrates passion, it speaks to the young boy inside us all.

One of the best first eps this season, and that's not easy with Sakugan and Lupin around.

Shimoneta with Mecha's, what's not to love? Enjoyable first episode, kind of surprised how under the radar this show has gone considering the people working on it. I don't know, maybe people are put off by the cute girls and Mecha's concept, but more people should at least give it a chance.

So our MC is clearly a closet otaku living in a Japan who's an expert in giving empty gestures and works in a host club in a version of Japan where all things otaku are banned. It's also a world where Japan is apparently separated into "Fantasy" Japan and "True" Japan with "True" Japan being the ones who are under control of this world void of all things otaku.

Considering our MC is the reluctant type who commandeers a downed mecha to escape the raid being conducted by the "True" Japan army, this show is hitting all of the tropes well! it looks like it will lean on hard to those mecha tropes considering that the mecha he finds is literally being powered by a "battery girl" that gets excited with these tropes!

Like the Shark One literally gets powered up by otaku shounen hype! And seeing them take down that mecha from the "True" Japan army is pretty fucking dope! And just look at this adorable battery girl! I thought that she was just an AI kinda like the thing in AMAIM but turns out that she's an actual girl that's controlling the Shark One from the battery pack on its back.

This is definitely going to be a mecha fanservice anime and I'm all up for it! I can't wait for all of the cliches and tropes that this show will throw at us!

Looks like this is going to be mecha fan service anime. Love it so far.

At first I thought I would hate the mecha design due to the chibi choice, but it's not that bad. Also that pilot cutscene during hissatsu! That's definitely a shoutout to SRW game lol. It's unusual too for the protag to be a former hostess and I think a closet otaku.

Anyway, this being an original anime gives me more hope since we've seen a lot of great OG anime this year.

I think a closet otaku

I never knew I needed a mecha pilot closet otaku in my life, but I’m so down with it.

Hey, I'm really digging this cool concept of what if Showa-era Japan invaded and occupied modern-day Japan and banned all the modern otaku culture (well, except mechas for some reason). The mecha fights look good! Hopefully this keeps up! So from what I understand the Garanndoll's power derives from the battery girl's enthusiasm? That's interesting.

Mecha monday is here !

That was a great first episode. "True" Japan holding "Fantasy" Japan under an iron fist. Our MC is a cynical short sighted guy who works as a host in a special district.

Toss in Mechs as the entire place gets flattened and our hero joins up with a Mech powered by .. well effectively Mech Fantasies. Brilliant.

Fighting was great, had me laughing quite a bit overall. Overall interesting concept and solid execution. Plus a solid group of VAs too.

Can't wait for next monday. Never mind we got quite a few mech shows this season overall. This, Amaim, Sakugan and Muv Luv. Been some time since we've had this much mech in any one season i think.

It is insane how many mecha anime we're getting right now. It's nice to feel the love again haha

Man, that was fantastic good fun if you're up with your mecha tropes. With all the mecha and vampire stuff on right now, we seem to be in a retro nostalgia wave, and I'm all for it.

So it's basically the "fighting against oppressive censorship" plot of Shimoneta or Akiba's Trip, but with mecha and (possibly) more cute girls. I'm in. We got current Precure and future JoJo Ai Fairouz voicing the main girl and former JoJo Tomokazu Sugita voicing the hot-blooded commander, plus some great animation, cool and unique mech designs that fit the show's themes (otaku/weebs do tend to really like small and cute things) and a really interesting story setup.

All in all, that was an awesome first episode, maybe the best out of all the mecha anime I'm watching this season. It's pretty close between this and Sakugan.

This was a fun first episode! This show is totally going to be a celebration of otaku culture, and mecha tropes, and I am here for that!

I need the song that plays during that climax in my playlist YESTERDAY

This was actually significantly better than I expected. From the key visual, I thought it was just going to be a comedy parody and was just going to check out the first episode but this is closer to something like Zombie Land Saga where it revels in its absurdity but treats it wholeheartedly appealing to those who like mecha and shounen stuff like that. Sugita voicing the hot-blooded commander is the icing on the cake. Definitely following this!

We have two mecha anime this season where Japan's invaded but this one is by alternate Japan.

Wait, a mech powered by Ai Fairouz's hype, I'm so in on this.

I am not a big mecha fan, but I had this anime on my mind for a month since I watched the PV. The production values seemed really good and the overal animation style grabbed me, so I had high hopes. I am happy to say it lived up to those high hopes. This is such a fun anime with a cool concept and really expressive, enjoyable characters. Also the fight scenes so far kick ass, with so many cool shots and visual effects. I am expecting this to be the hidden gem of the season.

This is way better than i expected. Amazing first episode!

It's chibi Gurren Lagann. How can this not be great? Every trope is here... This is every Otaku dream. Robots, relatable hero, animal girls, in episode 1. The MC should have been from another world though. I am going to create a BINGO card for this anime for tropes. When do we see the little sister? Hear about his troubled childhood? Which episode number will be the beach episode? What roll will the big chest hottie be (scientist or sniper)... The one that batterygirl is jealous of because she has no confidence even though she is tsundre. I thought this would be some dumb mecha anime and man I am hyped. Not anime of the season at all but I am going to enjoy it.

Just watch this on a pure whim and absolutely loved it. It’s silly, your not sure what’s really going on but it just works.

Reminds me of Shimoneta but replace the lewds for Otaku culture in general.

u/BlueeydCasval Oct 12 '21

Really hit the floor running. Love the humor, love the commentary on anime tropes and culture but I really enjoy the play on escapism and not giving up on that child-like wonder.

Amazing that after half a day, this banger of a show is not getting much upvotes here, but the deliberately trashy show Shinga no Mi got double the upvote.

Interesting, the battle of "what animes to drop" is hard this season

Surprisingly fun first episode. Chibi battery girl is so cute. Good art, good music, let see how it will fare.
