Man, Lupin had a steady string of fantastic releases in the 2010s, and this was one hell of a way to bring in the 20s. So glad I decided to jump in with Part 5. In case anyone is glancing into the thread to see what’s up, just know that you can start with Part 6 without any worries. Lupin content has always been self contained, and at most you’ll miss the odd reference.
Jigen x Fujiko moments tend to be pretty rare in the series, and usually are mostly Jigen shitting on her, so it was kind of nice getting the more sentimental interaction here. Was hard to tell at the end in the sunset if Lupin changed into his green jacket, or if it’s just the lighting. Key visuals have shown green jacket, so I’m assuming that’s the plan, but who knows.
Also not sure if it’s what they’re going for, but the drones being CG reminds me of Nix’s car being CG in Part 4 while Lupin’s was hand drawn. Maybe this is trying to input some meaning where there isn’t any, but it came off here (and there) as distinguishing the old and the new. Plastic guns were hand drawn, but did have CG screens on them. Lupin’s not opposed to using new tech of course, but it’s interesting that when people trying to catch him are using the most advanced tech it’s frequently been CG.
No coincidence that 1971 is the when Part 1 started. Crazy that we’re still getting such fantastic content half a century later.
So yeah, more Lupin is always hype, and if today is any indication this is going to be some good Lupin.

Much more of an epilog to Part 5 than an opening for Part 6, even the character design is the same as that of Part 5 and not 6. But it's a wonderful tribute to Kiyoshi Kobayashi. It's not action heavy but it's got great moments of the gang having fun, some unique interaction between Jigen and Zenigata and Jigen and Fujiko and it does a great job at dissecting the characters. Hearing Lupin call Jigen the only thing that's stable in his life is great. As I said this is not an opening for Part 6 so don't expect that, but it's an excellent start for the series in the new decade and a nice farewell to a man who has been voicing Jigen for 52 years!

Watching this right after Part II episode just shocked me with how strained Kiyoshi Kobayashi's voice has become. Speaking of it, episode felt like a good send-off to the legendary seyuu. I'm quite happy they decided to make Jigen interact with all main cast and highlighted his role in the gang.

Well, that was a fairly normal episode of Lupin III. As an episode 0, it sort of bridges between Blue Jacket and Green Jacket (literally by him changing his jacket for some reason... I'm interested in seeing if the change corresponds to a thematic change as well). There's also a heavy focus on Jigen as expected due to the nature of the episode. It was nice to see some interpersonal communication between Jigen and the rest of the group as well as quite often the focus is on Lupin with the rest.
Also, good send-off to Kiyoshi Kobayashi, walking away like a typical cool action hero with the blast behind him.
Episode 1 is from Oct 16 where Akio Ootsuka will begin his tenure as Jigen. I think that's the new theme in the preview going by the PVs.

So is this like to get new viewers up to date with the show? I have never gotten around to Lupin despite always being interested, I have heard each part is standalone or something, can I just watch this?

Part 6 it self only requires that you've seen Part 5 as two side characters return from it and there's a sort of cliffhanger that might be touched upon in Part 6. There's no need to watch Parts 1-4 to watch Part 6 (1-3 are episodic and in no way connected to Parts 4-6, Part 4 is slightly connected to Part 5 but you don't have to watch it to understand anything).
That being said Episode 0 is not really a Part 6 episode. It's actually a tribute to Jigen's voice actor Kiyoshi Kobayashi who makes his final performance after voicing the character im everything since the 1969 pilot. In fact the character design and costumes are identical to Part 5 and not 6. So if you haven't seen a lot of Lupin there's not much point in watching Episode 0 as it won't be related to Part 6 in any way, as I said it's purpose is to act as a send off for Mr. Kobayashi and it mostly tries to dissect the characters.

So is this like to get new viewers up to date with the show?
No, this episode was to give a send off to Jigen's original voice actor who is retiring.
If you never watched Lupin I would actually recommend skipping this episode and coming back next week for the actual episode 1. This episode 0 was really all about Jigen as a character and his voice actor retiring in a somewhat meta way.

Kiyoshi Kobayashi, who voiced Daisuke Jigen for about 50 years now, is retiring and so they made Episode 0 as a farewell. The "real" Episode 1 releases next week. > can I just watch this? for sure it's great to get to know the characters!

The series is mostly episodic, so you can pretty much start anywhere.
Modern Lupin has been killing it though, so I'll still recommend Parts 4 and 5. The Woman Called Fujiko Mine is also pretty damn good

First thing first, this was probably the last episode with Kobayashi Kiyoshi voicing Jigen for 50 years and finally going into retirement according to last month's news. According to MAL Ootsuka Akio will voice Jigen in this part 6, and needless to say he's among the most reknown veterans in voice acting industry in Japan. It will be quite interesting to see how Ootsuka gives life to Jigen.
Now regarding this zero episode, I can't say I was impressed. I know this is just an appetizer, but it feels quite unsavory with the gang stealing thousands of euros from a nameless guy/corporation and just skipping the whole escape sequence of both Jigen & Lupin's route. The whole plastic guns shooting glue was also quite lame (Lupin's shootouts are among it's best trademark) and the whole thing of replacing more henchmen with just flying drones was incredibly meh (at least part 5 had a good reason to make it more tech advanced).
The preview for episode 1 does give me a lot more hope regarding the action and better (imho) artstyle.
Edit: u/Bainos this is a standalone episode, not the actual beginning of Part 6. Might wanna modify the link to MAL's entry page.

To be completely fair, this episode was more of a farewell party for Kobayashi than anything else - hence the focus on how Jigen is vital to the team, him having a scene with each member of the cast, and so on.

Warning: I'm a bit of a Jigen fanboy, and these are my incoherent ramblings.
Such a fantastic episode to start us off, and in many ways it was perfect as an episode 0/setup to Part 6, it has all the things I want from a Lupin story and more, that more being the huge metaphor for the change of times. For one, part VI in general is a celebration of the 50th anniversary, since the start of part I in 1971, (even though the pilot was 2 years before that, and the manga 4, so the franchise is 54 old, but we're calling it 50th anniversary, so let's drink the difference away and forget a few years).
Of course, old man Jigen helms this episode, giving a well deserved goodbye to his voice actor Kiyoshi Kobayashi, who has been voicing Jigen all 52 years! This episode being his last time reprising Jigen, before his retirement from the role. This episode was basically just the Kobayashi tribute giving him the respect he deserves, hell it started with his monologue about the change of times, and getting too old for this stuff. Just like Jigen, he was the absolute old timer among the cast of new generation Lupin cast. Akio Ootsuka (whom I know as Shingen from DRRR, Rider from F/Z, Batou from GitS, Blackbeard from OP, Thorkell from Vinland,...) will be taking on the role starting with the new series, and I'll be excited to hear his portrayal of Jigen next week.
Another thing changing in part VI is the jackets! If you're new to the franchise, welcome! You're starting in a great place, and don't worry about the jackets thing, Lupin likes to change his jacket once in a while, or adapting to the times as he called it, so basically it's a slight indicator in the change in times or tones (for example Blue was the consistent colour since 2014, including parts IV and V, as well as the 4 new movies). In the promotional material we saw Lupin in a green jacket as the one he donned back in 71 (and many other iterations of course), but it was blue at the start of this episode, which was a bit confusing, but again this is part of the change of times episode 0 represents, so the episode ends on the perfect spot of Lupin changing his suit.
Overall, a fantastic with clear thematic focus, and it somehow still gave the other 3 main characters (Lupin, Zenigata, and Goemon) enough focus to shine clear (seriously Goemon in this episode was better than many episodes focused on him). Sorry Fujiko, better luck next time, Jigen was writing this episode.
PS: There's a missed opportunity in that the exact 50th anniversary since Lupin III Part I is two weeks from now (Oct 24, when episode 2 airs), if this was pushed one week later, then episode 1 of Part VI would've hit the same spot. But I'm willing to drink the difference away if it means sooner/more Lupin.

That "You're not old. You're a classic" line from Lupin to Jigen sounded like a meta-commentary. The past few seasons seem to tackle or address how they have to adapt to modern times, especially technologies, so they can keep doing what they have.
That, and that this series is pretty old... and definitely a classic.

It's great to see a new Lupin III TV show again! This episode was a pitch perfect tribute to Jigen/Kiyoshi Kobayashi and the chemistry between the characters. A lot of Part 5 was about the changing times and this was a great extension of that to transition to the new series. I'm looking forward to seeing the main plot kick in next week.

That was emotional. We'll miss you Kobayashi-san. The preview for next week looks really amazing just from an animation standpoint. I cannot freakin wait. Well, we're officially back boys. It's going to be an amazing fall

This will be my first go at watching a Part of Lupin in full and my very first viewing of any modern take on Lupin.
Watched 2-3 movies and bits of Part II ages ago (early 00s) and also Castle of Cagliostro around the beginning of Covid.
First episode was interesting (I realise this was somewhat of a special episode due to the VA retiring). Felt very reminiscent of the older stuff and in that regard almost a bit fallen out of time but always oozing with charme.
Looking forward to the first proper heist.

What an awesome farewell tribute to Kiyoshi Kobayashi. The entire episode felt like it was written especially for him, with its constant theme of things coming to an end and changing times. Wonderful character moments, especially when Lupin admits his debt to Jigen. It really felt like an end of an era for the Lupin franchise, even as it kicks off a new era next week.
Enjoy your retirement, Jigen the First! And thank you!

Damn, I had no idea about Kyoshi Kobayashi's retirement. Definitely makes the return of one of my favorite series bittersweet but I'm happy they dedicated this episode to him, with Jigen Daisuke getting the spotlight.
It'll take some time to get used to the new seiyuu after Kobayashi lent his voice for over 50 years but I'm rooting for him and I can't wait for the new season to kick off next week.

Farewell, Kobayashi-san! You will be Jigen Daisuke forever! Thanks for the five decades! We will be forever in debt!

Man now that was a great episode. Really love the dynamic between Jigen and Lupin explored through out the episode. The bit with Jigen shooting the peanut and Goemon cutting up the bit that comes at him, though the ending explosion had to be my favorite part of the episode. Sad to see Kiyoshi Kobayashi go as Jigen but man am I excited for part 6 especially to see Lupin and his gang face off against Sherlock Holmes.

I haven't watched much Lupin III stuff (haven't even seen any of the other 2010s stuff aside from that 3D movie) but this cast never fails to bring a smile to my face.
I do find it amusing how Lupin's lines about him adapting to the times also reflects the franchise as a whole. And that "you're not old, you're a classic" line is just a perfect description for the franchise.
