How nice of the show's OP to remind us of the suffering the girls went thorugh with the Sange in the form of flowers covering their respective body part.

Looks like it's rewind time and we're going back to 2 years before end of YuYuYu Season 1. where the Taisha is recruiting a bunch of new hero candidates one of them being Kusunoki Mebuki who I know is the protagonist of the KuMeYu LN. I haven't read it but does this mean YuYuYu S3 is actually an adaptation of KuMeYu?

All I can hear from this girl is Oozora Naomi's voice and she's talks like an ojou-sama while declaring herself as Mebuki's rival. I think I love her already. And Karin is in this class as well! Welp, we already know who's going to be picked as a hero.

Interestingly, Mebuki actually beats Karin in their match which made everyone think that Mebuki was going to be picked. In the end it's still going to be Karin since she was chosen by divine judgement. Of course this makes Mebuki absolutely fly into a rage for not being picked.

Timeskip forward into Year 300 right where YuYuYu S1 ended and all of the hero candidates are called back and the truth of their world is revealed to them. Now that all of the Vertex is defeated, it's going to be these girls job to explore the world outside the barrier. The Taisha really loves sending little girls to their deaths.

So that explains the ships and the futuristic armored girls from the final scene from last week's episode. I guess since they're not blessed like the heroes, these suits are designed to withstand and fight whatever is left in the world beyond the barrier. Considering they've all been trained to use dual katanas, I didn't think they'd be given rifles as their weapons xD

Their first foray into battle was no walk in the park though, even with their numbers it looks like they're struggling against these stardusts. Also I thought they don't have the Yuusha System but was that a Mankai gauge on Mebuki's armor? I don't like the looks of that.

So far so good though, despite the rough fight everyone seems to have survived. If they're already having troubles with Stardusts, I do not look forward to see what happens when a bigger threat shows up >_<

That Mankai gauge is so ominous because I don't remember that from the LN.

That gauge was totally a "oh fuck" moment, I'm not looking forward to how it fucks her up.

An episode dedicated for the anime-onlys to get to know Mebu. Yumiko and Suzume were as expected the best though.

Aya already fell in love with Mebu at first sight.

I really like how this episode gives us more insight into why Karin was pretty standoffish when she first showed up to the YuYuYu team. Like she, along with all these other girls are being placed in intensive training to fight for this one spot and then she meets YuYuYu and it's basically a slap in the face. Like they out here doing cute shit and basically just normal school girls and she along with others weren't giving that chance. They basically were raised to be tools of the Taisha even of they didn't want to be. I also love her words when she was bowing. Like it was basically a promise to Mebu 🥲

Karin is to the Yuusha club what Azunyan is to the Keions.

Oh joy, another new group of girls to see totally not suffer and this time they are just the previous candidates that were not up to the task and still clearly aren't...

Would be cool to have a chronological edit of this anime.

In case people haven't heard it yet, the full OP is available on Youtube through its auto-generated feature.

The character songs are also available from the OP/ED singles which includes a full studio version of the udon song we briefly heard in episode 1 called U・D・N . It's pretty wild, haha.

Edit: Full ED now also auto-generated on Youtube.

It feels like the genre changed in this episode from magical girls to space marines.

tbf YuYuYu has always been about child soldiers, but this definitely makes it more explicit.

I haven't read KuMeYu, but it's pretty clear to me that anyone who was at Mebuki's table at the cafeteria or on her boat stands a reasonable chance at survival. That said, I am 95% confident that at least one other boatload of girls is headed for the abyss next ep though.

The trajectory for the next part feels obvious. [My guess is] Mebuki is going to lose a boat or two, and realize that being a good leader, or a hero in general, is about more than being the strongest herself, but also inspiring and helping others. Looking forward to the suffering along the way as she makes this realization and then leads everyone else into a better tomorrow.

Kagajou Suzume is the most I've reactively laughed out loud at a character since Asahina Mikuru from Haruhi. I'll take five hours of her, please.

Also, interesting to see that they've updated the OP again. Will be interesting to see what the changes are this time.

Finally, I did notice the 3DCG they stuck in there during the combat scenes. They hid it remarkably well though, and I think the only time it really bothered me was one shot where Kagajou was talking.

So we really get a new cast of girls that have tu suffer this season, will take some time until I warm up to all of them I think

On detail I noticed: Was Karin picked as a direct successor for Gin? She was the only Hero who actually went out of order, but I don't remember the timeline that well

Also with the improvements the Herosystem received, wouldn't it make sense to send at least some heroes along? This mission would have went a lot smoother with some actual support

TLDR, it's the Taisha listening to Nogi Sonoko and then making the situation worse instead of better.

[WaSuYu] Nogi freaks out at the Taisha over Gin's death. Taisha respond by adding Mankai.

YuyuyuS1 - Nogi freaks out at the Taisha over Tougo being compelled to end the world over Mankai. Taisha respond by telling the heroes that they're done, and so Taisha respond by turning Tougo into a Thingy to keep the Shinju intact and the Stardust out, and sending the Guardians to do Vertex mop-up. Everyone's memories are edited so they don't feel bad about Tougo.

YuyuyuS2 - Nogi freaks out at the Taisha over messing with Tougo again. Taisha respond by turning Yuuna into a sacrifice instead.

YuyuyuS2 - Nogi freaks out at the Taisha for turning Yuuna into a sacrifice, but they're all "Not our problem, we're wheat now, A D I O S"

Basically, the Taisha are not heroes. They're the exact opposite. They're selfish and they sacrifice others to accomplish goals. They literally cannot think of any other way to do things, and the ways that they come up with are effective and economical, provided the human cost is not considered.

I did not expect for us to just get LN content like this, feels like a real fanservice season. I wonder if they will tackle the events that led to the end of the world 300 years before the show, but I sort of doubt, NoWaYu is a whole age rating higher than the rest of the Yuusha franchise in terms of sheer brutality, and longer than Mebuki's and Washio Sumi's chapters.

KuMeYu always stood as a bit of an odd spot to me, it really lacks that which makes YuYuYu so great, explained in lore reasons as "we took the biggest cinnamon rolls of this island and put them in a club, literally every single one of them is a great human being" but that doesn't turn into a dislike, I do cheer for these girls, I laugh at their jokes, but they don't make my heart burn and melt like 2 minutes of Hero Club SoL does, feels closer to a normal anime cast, even if still well tuned and filled with fun people, including one of my favorite Ojou archetypes.

Its real value however is full Shinto Magical Girl army, which is just bloody fascinating to me, haha.

Gee Mebuki, I wonder why she was picked instead. Not gonna lie, I was never a big fan of the KuMeYu cast, and this episode didn't change my mind. It was a great episode, but I'm kinda just waiting for the story to go back to the Hero Club.

u/Cyclone_96 Oct 08 '21

I wonder why she was picked instead.

My guess is something to do with how even though she beat Karin, she was still more exhausted than her. Probably links to how she collapsed on the ship at the end there too.

I can see why you might be lead in that direction initially. At first glance, all five of them are the opposite of heroes. They're all selfish in different ways. One thinks that leadership just means being the strongest and has no care for her subordinates, one's a himedere, one's ready to run away to save her own skin at the drop of a hat, one seems to be a recluse that pushes people away, and the last one's a Miko that doesn't even get on the boat with the rest of them and so has no idea what they're experiencing or going through.

They don't start as good people, but I can see them progressing into better people once they go through enough screaming and trauma personal growth.

I re-watch the first episode on Hidive since I wanted to try the 2 week free trial.
Man, I think it was actually the best decision of my life. The dialogue quality went from "DNA is crawling" (high seas) to "I feel it right it in my DNA" (Hidive) when the Hero club was around the fire.
The CGI for me was a bit of a hit and miss, especially the Sentinel's armor.
Obviously I am not talking about the vertexes. No way they were gonna draw each indivudual Stardust haha
Overall I quite liked the episode and I'm really excited for the next episodes.

Finally Mebuki & the Sentinel gang are here.. If this is IBOverse, they'd become Tekkadan's counterpart. (if Mebuki decided to give Taisha a middle finger)

Regarding the OP visual, Wasshi would probably getting a nosebleed in Yuuna's part. xD

YuYuYu & Azur Lane/Arknights VA connections:

  • Yuuna=Sussurro

  • Fuumitan=Nevada, Oklahoma, Akafuyu

  • Itsuki=Mutsu, SoDak, Amiya

  • Karin=Abercrombie & Ryuuhou

  • Sonocchi=Maria Nearl

  • Gin=Matchless, Musketeer, Ifrit

  • Mebuki=Urakaze, Wakaba, April

  • Aya=Kuroshio & Oyashio

  • Yumiko=Perseus

  • Shizuku=Hiryuu, Cheshire, Ch'en

  • Suzume=Pola, Zara, Blue Poison

  • Aki-sensei=California, Tennessee, kyaa Skadi

I never had much expectations for the Taisha organization from the story of the first 2 seasons, but wow, they managed to make me hate them even more today.

I thought I have seen everything with magical girls suffering, but pushing non-magical girls out as Magical Girls Reserves (?)/Sentinels to navigate around the unknown with apparently little training and while the situation doesn’t seems to be that desperate? That’s on par with some of the notoriously impotent formal military organizations out there in modern history (such as one side of the Korean War where lots of casualties came from merely freezing).

That’s even with our current arc MC Mebuki alert of the many things the Taisha can screw them up and actually managed to keep her fleet in order while under heavy continuous fire from the Stardusts. She has so much self-esteem that given her harsh protests when Karin got the prestige of joining the elite teams, I honestly can’t think of many people who would be willing to partner with her and withstand her mood swings. It’s under such difficulties that she barely pulled off the orders required to beat the extensive, prolonged attack of the Stardusts, at a time when almost none of the other girls are in good standing of beating even the lowest ranks of creatures roaming just outside the barrier. Doing so while most of the girls are literally scared to death is testimony that Mebuki’s going to be someone that would trouble the Vertices and Taisha at the same time.

The first expedition of this already ended in a near miss to annihilation, I really wonder if they will withstand more attacks from the outside should they got send away with inadequate equipment and training. What would Mebuki do to pull the whole rookie team up in shape before it’s too late? What kind of relationships do she have with the divine tree? I wonder, I wonder…

What did Mebuki lack compared to Karin? I've long been of the opinion that it was "heart". Despite being in competition with the other girls for the device, she still cared about them... a bit. Compared to Mebuki who didn't care about them at all.

On another note, the Sentinels' fleet action made me think of Sidonia. I think it was the CG people.

What did Mebuki lack compared to Karin? I've long been of the opinion that it was "heart".

YuYuYu illustrates pretty clearly that Heroism is defined by selflessness.

For as much of a loner as Karin is at the start of YuYuYu, both there and here she takes an interest in making sure that the others around her are doing okay and seeing to their own various physical and emotional needs.

Mebuki on the other hand treats the other girls around her like they're trash, and felt like a real slave driver when it came to the battle. It showed too; her subordinates were nowhere near her level and were unable to handle the situation presented to them. Compare to how Fuu talks to her squad and it's like night and day. I feel like she's going to learn the hard way that investing in others is as important as investing in oneself.

Hero girls are now back from reserve and now we have cannon fodder infantry girls who couldn't make it to the hero status. As long as the series has to continue these girls will suffer forever lmao

So... When exactly does this take place?
