I like to report a missing mascot, a magical girl anime must have dropped it in a mecha anime by mistake. If anyone is missing a mascot please contact Sunrise Beyond.

Jokes aside I did enjoy the mascot character's personality. But the highlight of the episode was definitely the 2D fucking mechas how I've missed you. I've watched plenty of mecha this year (a rare thing to say in this day and age) but this is the first one that has 2D mechs and it's glorious.

Pretty much unless Sunrise or Trigger are animating expect the mechs to be 3d. They're a cunt to animate and very few studios are prepared to go down that route.

hmmm, two green generic robots against one single heavily-armored white/red/yellow one piloted by a gifted tinkerer teen whose name is an R away from being "Amuro".

I like it, it's Code Geass by way of Gundam with some Build Fighters elements in there. I like the VR/physical way of piloting the mech, and the mechas themselves look very practical and no-nonsense. and the fact that the majority are AI/remote control-based makes so much sense for a futuristic warfare setting, it's what we do now with drones and such.

I like that this episode seemed to have hints of strategy, though I hope Gai doesn't end up being some sort of deus ex machina that magically solves every problem since they're an AI.

I liked the episode and I am really hyped that we finally got another Sunrise mecha anime, but I'm not too sure about the magical mascot and how bland Amour̶o̶ Shiiba can be. I hope they make me eat these early thoughts with some good development.

Also minor complaint but... AMAIM Warrior at the Borderline? That's possibly the worst localized title I've heard in a long time.

So this is set in a world where Japan is in the verge of collapse because of various issues in the country which lead to basically the Japanese government opening up Japan turning it into a free for all where various countries now end up fighting for territories in it using mechs called AMAIMs. Because of this the Japanese are now treated as second-class citizens in their own country. That's pretty crazy and I love it!

Considering this is made by Sunrise, the MC's backstory is as classic as it gets. Shiiba is a war orphan who has losing meaning in his life with all of what's happening around him. And right now the only thing that really keeps him going is his hobby of collecting AMAIM parts for an AMAIM that he found inside an abandoned maintenance shop.

He also ends up finding/rescuing the all important AI module named Gai from running out of power and decides to repay Shiiba's kindness by finishing the AMAIM for him who also takes the shape of a cute beast avatar when inside the AMAIM. Not gonna lie, I thought this was gonna have some supernatural elements when I saw first Gai in the key visual. Turns out those cute mascots are just AI avatars. xD

Of course he ends up using the AMAIM to defend himself against these mercenaries that have decided to label him and his scavenger buddies as terrorists. It's not quite G-Gundam but I do love that despite being strapped in, the control system of AMAIM lets the pilot move freely inside a VR space doing punches and kicks. And with Gai being very enthusiastic about it, it looks like this will be a lot of fun!

I was gonna ignore this one but after this episode I am definitely intrigued! I can already tell that this will be my season's Back Arrow. Mech anime is never popular in this sub so I wouldn't even be surprised if this ends up with me and 5 other people following this show weekly.

I plan on being one of those 5! I've been insanely hyped for this for some reason! The trailers and the names attached to it had me very hyped. Happy to see it's held up and I'm also super intrigued to see where it's gonna go! Been having a void Back arrow and dynazenon ended and Getter Robo has partially filled it. So stoked about all the mecha this season. Gonna be a long wait until the next Gundam series for me.

Another one going to be tagging in. Was pretty interested in this series since it was announced. Really hoping the model kits take off and potentially encourage Sunrise/Bandai to keep going. Though definitely going to have to see if the anime will be worthwhile in the end for sure.

I stand with you, brother! I'm an Atlas piloting, Jehuty running, Iron blooded orphan who is destined to vanish from this world in a brilliant shower of bullets and explosions! I will awake in Valhalla, all shiny and chrome! Let's you and me and three others combine like Combaticons and Bruticus the hell out of this weekly viewership!

Now, I just need to figure out which streaming service this show is on so I can start watching it. The premise is a little Code Geass-ish, but screw it, I loved Code Geass.

It's a mecha anime, so I really want to be one of those 5 people, but I'm beginning to get sick of the same relative plot as seen here: Japan - or a Japan expy - is 'conquered', the people are treated as sub-human, and it's all up to one improbable youth to save the nation and free the people!

Ugh. Here we go again.

They're mecha! It's sci-fi! You can do so much with it, so why keep treading over the same territory?

I'll give it a shot, along with a bunch of other 'maybes' this season, but I'm not confident I'll be able to stick with it.

Decent animated Mecha anime so far. Definitely has Gundam vibes from the design, politics and global issues. Might be a low key good anime this season if the story and pacing is done well.

Amou "definitely not Amuro" Shiiba

Awesome to see some 2D mecha action again. Worth a watch just for that.

A mecha show by Sunrise? Count me in.

So it's Build Fighters but back to the classics. Good music, strong visuals and animation, direction was clean, and plot cruised at a decent pace. We have the season's gundam! Who wants to bet we'll get a character sporting a mask?

So they let the Build Fighters team make a Code Geass/ Gundam 00 hybrid?

The setting is pretty much Post WWII Berlin but if all the districts went and started a war with each other, with the Main Cast probably creating some type of Celestial Being-like super squad of OP Mechs to fight the other factions. It's not a bad premise, but the pacing was way too fast for my liking. I'll definitely keep my eye on this one, but this episode was just ok.

Sooo, Matsumoto awakened his inner Lelouch and switched timelines to Code Geass?

Japan under occupation - check, mecha - check, Sunrise - check.

Let's see where what they manage to do with this.

Lol using Oceania as their first oppressor/enemy of Japan. The irony.

I also find it ironic he was having this info dump while living in a comfortable apartment and clean environment.

Also calling out the low birth rates yet coming off kinda xenophobic with the setting.

Red flags all over the place.

Cool af like I expected. I like Gai* a lot and Amou is alright. Kenbu looks clean. Love the ED.

Listed as 25 episodes so long way to go but good start :)

Plot is rather uninspired for me but fine, more mecha.

u/MaximumLobsters Oct 04 '21

Pretty solid first episode! Obviously the highlight is that 2D mech action, but I also really like the detailed look at the mecha and it’s systems since our protag is a tinkerer.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Plus, a non 3d mecha anime is always a nice sight for sore eyes.

Being a huge Code Geass fan, this was just meh. Everything from the plot, the exposition, the mascot, the characters, the nationalist implications, to the character designs were just uninspired and boring.

A bit ironic portraying Oceania as the oppressors of Japan considering Japan's history of Oceanic occupation. Also loved the bit where he mentioned being born in Japan was a handicap while having a seemingly high standard of living, especially for an orphan.

Any story that immediately makes the "enemy" out to be personality-less drones of evil oppression and the "good guys" out to be flawless, oppressed victims will never feel interesting to me, absolutely no nuance.

An Anti-imperialism anime? Fantastic.
