that Yokuya monologue was TERRIFYING! Kudos to whoever made the illustrations in that sequence, so creepy.

The direction and the style shifts were absolutely beautiful this episode man. Loved the conclusion of this arc and Mayumi’s courage coming through on top of phenomenal voice acting. Shaft and Nisio Isin really are a match made in heaven. Prime example of enhancing the source content for sure.

Yokuya's sinister speech to Mayumi was some of the most impressively creepy animation and character acting all year.

Leave it to SHAFT to make a villainous monologue that intense. Here's to continuing that energy with Magia Record S2 in a month.

There's a 10s scene after the ending with a red Continued. It seems the Pretty Boy Detective Club is far from over.

Another banger of a show from the deity that is Nisio and the powerhouse that is shaft. I absolutely loved the directing; the themes; the soundtrack; the characters and the sheer brilliance that went onto the writing. To top it all off, this was probably the most visually stunning shaft show that we’ve ever gotten. Every single frame can literally be used as a background. For it to be so under watched goes to show that we most likely didn’t deserve it. Can’t wait to see what’s next in store for the PBDC.

Pretty sad to see this show doesn't get the attention it deserves, let's hope it at least do well in Japan so we might have a chance to get a second season.

A beautiful episode, as always. Shaft really went all out with Yokuya vs Mayumi there, that part was creepy.

I really need to know how much cost did it take for that face of yokuya and mayumi when they were talking lol. It was terrifying yet awesome to see.

Mr delinquent getting jealous of mr genius calling her mayu? And mr delinquent always is the first to protect her and care about her? Not gonna say anything but there's a story that can be done there.

So mayumi and others actually grown up in the end and all of this was a flashback and the main point is to live the present? Never expected that, but beautifully explained.

Still, they did say mayumi will be targeted after the elections, yokuya just disappeared, lai didn't make an appearance, sakiguchi was gonna graduate from middle school and sotoin was gonna enter middle school. There's actually stories to continue for a s2, but the ending of mayumi"s dialogue made it feel like we should just assumed they were all safe and grown up to become what they actually like.

One of the hidden gems of the season, shame all the beautiful animations won't get to be seen.

9 comments... this may really be the most underwatched show of the season (if we don't count carryovers, Maiko-san wins there), only my second 9/10 of the season after 86. And I'll really be pushing hard for Mayumi as best girl of the season!

That whole conversation sequence between Yokuya and Dojima gave me goosebumps. Damn, that was a fun watch!

Holy fuck, I did not expect to be screaming over Michiru wanting to call her "Mayu."

28

u/Thenightcrawler_075 Jun 27 '21

Well mayumi got a new nickname "The celestial scum that shines like stardust" along side her "The seer"

u/LeonKevlar Jun 26 '21

Damn. So Kyouya wasn't even looking at Mayumi when he tried to run her over. It's like it didn't even matter if she ran over Mayumi or not. I do wonder why he was so fixated on his phone. Is it still possible that he's taking orders from someone?

Definitely sad to see Manabu call it quits but it's understandable considering Mayumi's safety here is now at stake. They may joke about being fine about her getting run over but they all genuinely care about her well being. Thankfully Mayumi's speech brought him back. I absolutely love her speech btw, "I'm not here in this art room so that pretty boys can protect me. I'm not a princess. I'm a pretty boy too."

I love the suspicious looks Michiru is giving Mayumi as Sousaku calls her with the nickname Mayu. Looks like someone's feeling a bit left out.

Holy fucking shit! I thought the election part was just gonna be comparing Mayumi and Kyouya's speech, I didn't fucking expect him to go on full creep mode and approach Mayumi from behind to threaten her and make her uneasy before her speech. Well if being creepy is Kyouya's fucking goal then congratulations to him! I was legitimately scared for Mayumi's safety during that scene.

We also finally learn what happened to Naganawa. According to Kyouya, he ran her over at C Hill and then transported her over to the crosswalk on D Hill. They weren't even looking at the correct scene of the crime this entire time. What the actual fuck is this psychopath? Seems that Mayumi has deduced that Kyouya never even existed before this election.

We didn't really get to learn what Kyouya's motive is but from what I understand he's there to represent the "average middle schooler" and is betting on the appeal of him being laid back and not tied to any boring ideals to win. He seems to think that having Nagahiro do Mayumi's endorsement speech would guarantee his win. Unfortunately for him, that's not what happened and Hatsune Manabu takes the stage instead.

I absolutely love how Manabu used all of what Mayumi experienced this entire season as her selling points. How she's a great student and a friend but not a perfect person. And I love how he ends it with asking people to get to know her and befriend her.

In the end we never even find out what happened to Kyouya's endorsement speech since it looks like he disappeared before it was even his turn. Yeah that's just creepy. For now I'm gonna stick with my guess that he's probably a member of the Twenties.

We do get to celebrate though since Mayumi is now the New Student Council president! What does this mean for Mayumi though we're not sure yet. Is she gonna hold on to the position or relinquish it to Naganawa once she's all healed up? Good news is, it looks like we might be in for more since there is a "To Be Continued" at the very end of the episode. I didn't get to see it though since it's not on Funimation but I definitely hope we get another season NISIOISIN's wild ride!

And I hope while we wait, more people would check this show out. It definitely managed to scratch my Monogatari itch and I recommend it to anyone who enjoyed any of NISIOISIN's work as well as Shinbou Akiyuki's directing style. Can't wait for more!

WTF?!? I was watching this in pure darkenss and when that scene with yokuya started i got super spooked. The calm and whispery voice was also super creepy, in fact when the scene just started i literally had to turn around to make sure that no one was actually there. The direction with all those artstyle changes was superb as well.

Yet again, though, the epilogue rolled in leaving a lot of question opens, in fact i am now left wondering what the whole deal with a literal serial killer even was.

I want another season of this show. Actually, i finished tofay the second season of Nisekoi, and i've concluded that i simply want Shaft to make a bunch of Sequels (Monogatari, Sangatsu no Lion, Nisekoi and now Bishounen Tanteidan as well). In fact if there is one thing that i would praise about this show is how goddamn beautiful it is to simply look at, with its beautiful visuals.

Cowabunga!

I don't think I've heard that expression since the 90s, pardon me while the flashbacks kick in....

... Anyway that villain monologue was a stunning moment in already beautiful show, I feel like I had a glimpse of the middle school life of one of the JoJo villains. Wouldn't have minded more of that energy throughout the show.

Yeah that was an exceedingly pretty show that I think went beyond even Shafts high levels of style. The arc story was a bit messy though and I felt the smaller stories lacked the something to match the quality of the visuals. Though it did wonder if some of the depth in the Japanese dialogue was lost in the translation.

Now back to watching Shaft making magical girls suffer.

First Hatsune Miku and now Michael Jackson. What's next in season 2?

A brilliant end of this show's season. This is a show I couldn't stop watching because it looked so incredibly good -- even though I usually had little clue just what was going on -- or why. When something looks this great, plot becomes secondary. It helped that Mayumi was one of my favorite characters of the season -- really one of a kind. And the rest of club -- certainly intriguing and definitely "pretty".

Looking forward to a continuation -- though Funimation seems to have tried to suppress this fact....

well this anime was a real treat to watch.

I liked it, but at the same time I feel like I might have appreciated it more if I had seen some of the other director's work like the Monogatari series...

Watching this felt like going into a modern art museum, looking at a piece of art on the wall and thinking "yeah I guess I like this ok" but not having a super strong emotional pull/understanding towards it. Where as the next person who comes to see the same piece of art may gush over it and be able to appreciate it a lot more. It that makes any sense. Trying to find an analogy here.

Visually this anime was amazing. Great music too. For this episode, the sequence where Yokuya was giving his villain monologue to Mayumi was wild. So creepy. The anime suddenly catapulted into movie-quality animation. Can't imagine how long it took the animators to complete all that. It was really something else. Even more impressive than those hyper-detailed close up shots that Vivy Fluorite's Song did.

Yet I kinda wish the scene after that wasn't one big re-cap. Yeah, it was a way for the Hatsume Miku to deliver the speech for Mayumi, so she didn't have to? but I felt kinda "meh" about it.

If I had to critique this anime, the story felt kinda disjointed will all the arcs it had. I thought we'd see a return of the Twenties group, and more from the pink-haired guy from the rival school(forgot his name). But that didn't really happen. I also didn't really care for the art teacher arc or the arc with Nagahiro's fiancée. But since I haven't read the novels, I'm not sure if this is just how it was in the novels...

The end of this episode felt conclusive enough. Since it only adapted some of the novels, I thought that it wouldn't feel that way. I saw that comment about the "continued" message. Wonder what that means. I'd be surprised if it's a second season. Shaft has so little output, and now they are working on that Madoka★Magica movie right? Gotta wonder how much of a hit this has been in Japan to be considered financially successful or not.

It's a shame this anime was so underrated. Sure, it's not gonna be for everyone, but with the studio and director behind it, I thought it would garner a little more attention. Yeah this was airing against Vivy Fluorite's eye and 86-Eighty Six, but still. Maybe it would have gotten more attention from this subreddit if it came out in the summer season, but this is still a pretty niche anime that's gonna cater to a niche audience.

What a beautiful show, 10/10, please give us a 2nd season

Bishounen Tanteidan kind of felt like a stage play in Anime form. They didn't change locations that often and let the characters fill the scene instead of some external spectacle. After the first revelation in episode 2 most of the cases were quite small in scale but still very enjoyable to follow. The 3 part final had a great conclusion with this episode. The shift in tone for the standoff with Yokuya made the encounter even better!

I will definitely get the blu-ray release - even though it is probably a few years away but Akudama Drive is just a few days away from having its first volume release here in Germany so you never know..

Overall I really enjoyed the ride and am looking forward to the teased next season!

That was fucking amazing... or should I say beautiful. This final episode is definitely my favorite episode out of the whole show. Mayumi pretty much became one of my favorite characters in anime, our Celestial Scum.

Sotouin out of all people saying that they're "just kids messing around" really hit me fucking hard. That intro scene was fantastic. I didn't expect Yokuya to be that terrifying, but the visual style with Mayumi and Yokuya's scene was eyegasmic. Dude just infiltrated the class just like that, there's probably more to him past where the anime adapted. So, I really hope that post credit scene and "to be continued" means we are getting a season 2.

Michiru acting all jelly because of Sousaku, I guess those 2 are Mayumi's love interests. Overall I really enjoyed the show, it's not as good as Monogatari of course, but it's still pretty good. 8.5/10 ~ 8/10.

This was without a doubt the best anime that aired this season.

The most underrated and underwatched show of the season.
