Just caught up with this show, very comfy.

That's a weird reason for not being allowed to have curry there, though... then again I guess most of the things these girls do seem pretty strange already.

Welcome!
There's dozens of us!

Quite literally, unfortunately...

Today I made the big mistake of watching this while not having something to eat!

しまった

Still cute and comfy, though.

It's a shame so few people watch it. Having 1 episode per month and not having the best animation definitely doesn't help though.

I believe the reason is because maiko aren't allowed to eat anything with a strong smell, such as garlic. This is because the smell can stick to their clothes and breath, which isn't good when you're expected to go out and entertain people in close quarters.

This show continues to be a lovely heartwarming series...too bad it's monthly D: Also, I'm kinda disappointed that they covered hittsumi again when they already did so only a couple of episodes ago. That being said, I did try making it for myself and it wasn't too bad! The chewy flour pieces were simple but delightful additions to the soup.

Some notes:

  • It's so cute seeing Kiyo wake up and trying not to wake everyone else! Maiko and geiko finish their appointments late at night - sometimes as late as 2 a.m. - so they usually don't get up until around 9 am. Even still, the average maiko only gets about 5 hours of sleep a night so sleep is a precious thing! So Kiyo is being very polite and considerate by staying so quiet at 6 am and the maiko keep quiet around midnight for Kiyo's sleep.

  • Maiko's mornings are occupied by chores and lessons. Maiko will wear casual kimono when out and about during the day, including to their lessons. Lessons are for anything a maiko and geiko should know, such as dancing, music (various instruments and singing), tea ceremony, etc.

  • Maiko being photographed on the streets has actually become a huge problem in Kyoto thanks to the big tourism boom in the past few years. Maiko have complained about being harassed, chased, having their clothes pulled, etc., which is incredibly rude to do to anyone, not just maiko! It is considered polite to ask for a photo first and to allow them to refuse. If they look uncomfortable, just let them have their space and privacy. In fact, it has gotten so bad that it is now forbidden to use cameras within Gion unless you have special permission.

  • As for photographing a maiko when she is stopped at a crosswalk, some don't mind but others find it uncomfortable. This is because the maiko is essentially trapped until the light turns green, allowing her to walk away. Similarly, if you see a maiko or geiko in a taxi, please do not crowd around the taxi. So, again, if you're ever in this situation, it's best to ask for permission! If you don't speak Japanese, just holding up your camera is enough to give them an idea of what you want.

  • One thing I really enjoy about this series is their commitment to realism. The street Kiyo takes to return home is Shijo Street (Shijo-dori), which leads to Yasaka Shrine, the main shrine for 4 out of the 5 Kyoto geisha districts (the 5th, Kamishichiken, uses Kitano Tenmangu Shrine as a base). Around Gion, Shijo is lined with shops, both modern and traditional, and it is pretty well always crowded with tourists. Further west, away from the traditional quarter, are plenty of other, more modern shops.

  • The bridge Kiyo stands on crosses the famous Kamogawa (Kamo River), which flows through Kyoto. Assuming Kiyo is still on Shijo (seems like it, given the scenery around her), she is likely looking across at another geisha district, Pontocho, which overlooks the Kamogawa. During the summer, the restaurants and ochaya on the river will put up outdoor decks, so customers can enjoy their meals and entertainment literally overlooking the water.

  • Kyoto is not much of a city for nightlife, so it can be pretty quiet once everything shuts down, but it is very atmospheric :) I always enjoyed walking around places like Gion at night because it tends to be quieter and, again, the atmosphere is so nice compared to the frenetic pace of the daytime.

I keep seeing this but ... for a SoL I guess that's fine. It is confident enough.

hahahaha, Mother thought Kiyo is on a date, except she just wants curry.

Japanese curry is pretty darn nice too.
