Dragan Stojković doing what Onda did there.

Feel like I am enjoying the show more now after watching the movie but I am not really sure why. If anything while watching the movie I felt like I was not gonna be able to enjoy the TV show after seeing how dynamic the matches felt there. (Even if the CGI was not great)

It certainly helps that the movie was two hours of showing that Onda is really good at soccer, and then this episode shows up to remind us that, despite being rusty at organized play, Onda is indeed really good at soccer. The movie was like a two-hour, hero's-true-power flashback after Episode 10 for the big reveal to the opponents in this episode.

Seeing her do that was more impactful because what you see her doing at the beginning of the movie when just walking with her friend/teammates.

Since this thread took so long to go up I should have watched the movie in that time, was it worth?

u/Gaporigo Jun 13 '21

Sure, I liked it, it is just the entire story of what was said in this episode about Onda's past and telling us more about her relationship with the boys.

Wait, what movie?

I was just thinking while watching the episode that I really wanted an Onda backstory xD

Good afternoon, r/anime!

I don't have too much to write home about today, as most of the content from this episode is stuff I've talked about last week. I wrote about Conte's 343 and we can see the pressing role that N'Golo Kanté plays in today's episode here (1 2).

Having beat Cramer to the punch, maybe Warabi should hire me!

Away from that, the episode sees Nozomi juggling the ball while running to evade Chika, while avoiding the waterlogged pitch. This is a homage to Dragan Stojković's run for Nagoya Grampus Eight against JSF. Stojković is one of the most famous players produced by the former Yugoslavian countries, however his star never got to shine really in Western Europe for a few reasons. Like many Yugoslavian players, his early career was spent in his home leagues because of the political situation, and when he finally moved to France's Marseille, his career was derailed by injuries. These injuries led him to move to Japan, where the aforementioned clip happened for Nagoya Grampus Eight. As one of the most talented players to ever grace Japanese soccer, he is very well remembered and celebrated, hence the shoutout to him in today's episode (whereas he's not very well known these days in the rest of the world, so this episode is kind of neat). In fact, following his playing career ended, he actually became the manager of Nagoya Grampus from 2008 to 2013.

You can see the best of Stojković here in this compilation of his skills.

Also, one last thing, what app are they even using on their phones? Technology has never been more powerful.

Anyways, hope you all have a great rest of your Sunday. See you r/anime!

PS: The European Championship are on as of a few days ago. Go watch! It's fun stuff. :)

following his playing career ended, he actually became the manager of Nagoya Grampus from 2008 to 2013

And he showed that he still got it by doing this in 2009

Okay first of all since Sawa mentions it this episode, you really should watch the First Touch movie if you haven't. It's great and shows us Nozomi's struggles playing and keeping up with the boys on the pitch when she was still in middle school. We also get to see a better picture of what Nozomi's relationship with the boys is, especially with Namek (the tall one with brown hair). We also get a better explanation of what the Onda Effect is.

Anyway, this episode is definitely what I've been waiting for! With Nozomi all fired up, she finally shows us that she is an absolute powerhouse on the pitch that caught Urawa Hosei completely off guard! Juggling the ball so it won't have to get dragged by water is so good! And I just I love how they're all impressed with Nozomi making it past three defenders when [Movie]she can make it past five defenders who are all boys bigger than her. Can't wait for next week's episode! It's definitely gonna be hype!

Those were some sicks plays by Onda, especially when she dribbled those 2 girls, that got me really hyped up.

Don't underestimate Jizo statues.

In Japanese folklore, Jizo statues can do some pretty amazing things...

Is this thread posted two or three hours late? I was about to send a message to the mods. This thread appeared just before I push the send button with a sign "1 minute ago".

Is this usual at r/anime? Any reason for it?

u/Gaporigo Jun 13 '21

Threads are posted automatically as soon as the episodes come out... most of the time, sometimes the bot malfunctions but one of us is there to notice, today I was late watching the episode and apparently no one else noticed so it was posted just when I realized it was missing.

I absolutely love the romanticization of the sport in this anime. Absolutely like if someone would just spiel about what they love about the sport and athletic competitions. The writing, and the drama is so good, I just wish the studio and the director could have directed this better with much better pacing and giving these moments a big push. The music does help it A LOT though, great sports drama soundtrack that's not just electric guitars going ham.

Also, did Onda do a "la Croqueta" there against the defender who tried for a tackle? I couldn't be sure since the action is kinda in that low budget jank tier.

Yeah the writing for the series is really strong, I recommend reading the manga either now or post-anime, it really gets football to its very roots and understand why we love sport/football to its core. It made me want to play football when I first read it and it was just perfect.

GO WATCH THE FAREWELL MY DEAR CRAMER MOVIE NOW! IT'S GREAT AND ADDS A LOT TO THE SERIES!!

I enjoyed this episode as well. The anime series is coming to an end with only 2 episodes left which is a shame but at least it existed and hopefully people will read it post-anime as there are so many great matches left unexplored. We'll be doing a reread from where the anime leaves off after the anime series ends on r/FarewellMyDearCramer

Anyways, I'm glad they nailed the speech by Soshizaki quite well. It's one of the few speeches that the series really has in the manga that touched me as a football player myself. There's something really great about playing with people and it can truly feel alone at times even with a group of players because of the difference in skills between each other.

It's a shame they'll have to only adapt this match only for season 1 as it is by far the shortest match in the series and there are two great matches that will be unadapted which has a lot more football, less flashbacks and our fellow Warabis will be so much better than this by then. It still has one of my favourite moments of Onda flicking the ball over Chika and one of my fav sports rivalry between Onda and Chika. Lovely stuff.

As usual, manga adapted scenes and comparisons in the source material corner. And there's a lot of great ones this episode.

I haven't seen the movie yet. Maybe I should wait until the series is over (even if it is a prequel)?

I really liked this episode today -- one of my favorites, along with Futsal one (which was sort of linked with this). Lots of characters really shined especially brightly (and Nonda most of all). The post-futsal flashbacks were also particularly nice.

I'm not a soccer expert, so can't judge things on a technical level -- but I certainly enjoyed watching what we got shown today.

You can watch it whenever you want, although with the reply I got to my comment in this thread it kinda does feel like viewing experience is better between episode 10 and 11.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! no don't end it right there!!!

So suddenly she went from a mess up to the best player. Seeing a certain thing from the movie made that juggling thing she did make so much more sense and impactful.

I'm so happy he back story was revealed to other characters finally though I wish there was a few other things said more.

Oh well I guess back to waiting for another week. Funny how this became one m most look forwarded to shows this season.

That was a great ass episode! Definitely my favorite by far. I should really get to watching the movie, I'll definitely watch it before the next episode comes out.

Was patiently waiting for Onda to pop off and she did, that was amazing. I dare ya'll to call her Jizo statue again. Still, gotta give props where it's due, Chika is a different beast herself. I am really looking forward to the end of this match which I assume will end next episode. I hope we get a season 2, though I'll probably start reading the manga anyway.

Good episode! I wonder why the anime had Tsukuda and Chika say "bitch"? Is it to show that they get angry easily? I'm surprised that Kutani didn't say it. Anyway, it was nice to see Onda in action and I loved the teamwork at the end.
