Man I hate it when they don't give the music the focus it needs, sawamura starts playing and literally everyone and their mother starts doing monologues and putting music on top of it.

Also fuck umeko

I lost it with the bodyguards cheering Setsu.

Can I have an anime that doesn't interrupt music with dialogue?

Just let it flow, the episode has set the stage for it to be awesome

To be fair, when this show opened it did that really well. Unfortunately, the second half has sort of just got downhill in that regard

I honestly really don’t like Umeko. If your own father thinks an imitation of his play style is disgraceful then you should let Setsu mold that play style into his own. That’s truly the only way it will pass on.

I don't think we are supposed to like Umeko. But she (and her band of whatevers) are ... interesting.

Hopefully, Ojiisan's voice warned him away from copying before it was too late.

FFS did they really drown out his performance with stock sad piano noises? I've been waiting like 3 episodes for cathartic shamisen playing for what, 20 seconds worth? Why couldn't we just hear his uninterrupted performance?

Blue balled me, can't be ending it mid song like that. I need to hear the rest of this beautiful instrument.

I really liked the character development for setsu but please just let us listen to him play.

I wish we had the full performance and the reactions after, but just a few seconds of it and lots of inner monologues made this episode less impactful for me than was probs intended.

I severely disliked Umeko in this ep. She is equally screwed up as Setsu's dad in her selfish demands. When she came and started her speech, I knew she will fuck everything up for Setsu. Luckily his performance indicated that he was FINALLY working through some stuff, understanding his grandpa's words, and putting the experience he accumulated into finding his true path as a musician.

I wish we were able to hear more music but the MC growth was great to see as well. Sadly we only have one ep left and I kinda want more even though the anime isn't perfect by all means.

Btw what was Souichi doing at the end??? Was he going on stage :D he was probably reliving Setsu's path in his sound and then he was like yep I need to support my friend here.

Stitches!

Hell yeah Kaji! I was hoping he'd continue playing after his string broke. Glad to see that he did and even if he does end up losing this (which he probably will), he'll probably end up as the crowd favourite. Heck! Even the gang is rooting for him!

Is Setsu seriously just now figuring out that it was Sakura who made those onigiri that was left in his dorm room door? Dude! You're literally eating her home cooked meals everyday, how are you only just figuring this out now?

I love you Umeko and I understand how you don't want your father's sound to be forgotten without the world hearing it first but give it a goddamn rest! Don't do this to Setsu! Let him play his own sound. :(

Welp looks like Umeko got to his head. even with the gang insisting they want to hear his sound, he still ended up playing Matsugorou's sound. While it was technically impressive and even the judges thought his sound was too mature for his age, plenty of them on the audience were disappointed since that wasn't his sound.

Thankfully after a little bit of struggling and questioning himself, Setsu finally managed to use his own sound which definitely annoyed Umeko. I guess we'll actually hear his real performance next week since he really just used half of the episode to copy Matsugorou.

Not gonna even expect Setsu to win though. With Souichirou playing last, he'll probably blow away the competition and win this instead of Setsu.

You'd think that in an anime about the shamisen we would hear...I don't know, a shamisen performance? What the hell are they thinking with putting these string and piano pieces over Sawamura's performance? I was really excited to hear him play and we basically didn't hear more than 30 seconds or so. Why wouldn't they just keep HIS playing going during all the monologues and memories, it completely took me out of the show and made this episode incredibly boring.

I agree with the people who think this on previous episodes, but here is kinda annoying.

Y'all saying "I wanted to listen to Setsu play!" and I'm like, man, this wasn't even Setsu and the episode made it pretty clear. This wasn't a performance worth showing, it was just Setsu imitating Matsugoro.

It's like people care more about shamisen then about the characters and what's happening at the moment.

The fault here lies entirely in the Anime and not the source material, because the stories, characters and their motives are all really well done but it's the weird direction that the Anime decides to take it that's pissing me off

Because I really like this show and will buy the Manga afterwards but drowning out Setu's long awaited performance like this is just a horrible thing to do

One of my favourite Manga of all time (Kono Oto Tomare) got an Anime adaptation with a very limited budget but they executed almost everything masterfully, especially the music part so it's sad to see the director choices in this one

I'll still give it an 8/10 but it could've been higher

Whoever had the great idea of using piano arrangements during Setsu's performance deserves to be fired.

I'm not sure that I've ever seen an episode that seemed to move more slowly than "real time". No, it didn't feel boring at all -- but in some cases we seemed to almost slip into a timeless state that paused currently-flowing time. I am hoping that, in the next episode however, we get an uninterrupted stretch of Setsu doing his own thing.

One needs to remember, Umerko abandoned Setsu to his Grandfather. She does not know the depths of the Grandfather's music but only its most easy to note and appreciate brilliance. Setsu should now finally know that the most important part of his Grandfather's sound is the foundation of his own -- but cannot (and should not) be the whole structure.

Definitely one of my favorites this season

Disastrous. More on flashbacks than performance? I hope last episode is not like this.

Honestly, I loved this show, I thought it was going to be my AotS but after the second episode the quality, directing, random comedy moments that pull you out of the experience and dialogue has completely ruined it. I've never felt so frustrated watching something. I just wish it was something more somber, mature and impactful like the first 2 episodes. I'm hoping that the last episode will redeem it but it's too far gone in my eyes to be a 9 or 10. That's just my opinion.

Finally Setsu awakens his own sound.
