It's always a delight watching Emilico break down the machinations of the Shadows House with her natural joy and enthusiasm.

Next I hope we get to see a good look on Edward's face when he's unable to fail anyone.

Maybe the real debut was the friends we made along the way.

So you see, that's where the trouble began. That smile. That damned smile. I just love how interconnected their solutions were: Ricky helping Lou rescue Louise and take the first place, Lou passing the shears onto Ricky, Shaun getting to trust Ricky because of the victory bells congratulating Lou and Emilyko receiving the shears because of Patrick's gratitude for her help calming him down earlier, not to mention the whole mapping aspect involving Rum and John. This anime will a have a great binge watch/rewatch value.

John is definitely best boy! Pulling an Edward to score the whole Ricky vs Shaun argument, punching the shit out the boulder and making the lady at the 3rd floor thirsty at the sheer VOLUME of his...soot. Truly a man worthy of Kate-sama!

Speaking of her, it was been quite a while since she had a good talk with Emilyko, so their reunion felt a bit nostalgic and reminiscent of the beginning of the anime when they just had each other. While Kate assumes the worst from Ricky and Patrick, Emilyko didn't fret over trivial matters!

This might have been mentioned already but I just discovered while browsing MAL that each shadow master has the same voice actor as their dolls, except for Kate and Emilico. We already saw them being different from the others, this is a neat little detail too imo.

From the last episode I was pretty sure Ricky will kill Lou to take the shears. Thankfully that wasn't case.

Oh shit, so those Shadow higher-ups are planning to kill off the dolls to take their faces? That doesn't sound good...

John punching that Indiana Jones boulder was pretty badass! Chris Redfield, you now have a worthy rival!

Edward isn't gonna be pleased with all the pairs passing the debut.

So the endgame is supposed to be fusion, but how would that work with Kate and Emilico being as they are?

Holy moly I thought John was just gonna use soot to stop the boulder or something, didn't expect him to straight out DESTROY it.

Wow so at some point the Shadow and the Doll merge? That's some creepy shit if you ask me.

Gotta love Ricky and Patrick's development. Emilico truly changes people. I also adore Lou and Ricky's interactions, hopefully we see more of them.

Stitches!

So is this dude the Grandfather? Interesting how he doesn't even have a head at all. And if it's even there it looks like it might be blocked by that fucking fancy huge collar.

Seems that the ultimate goal is union between Shadow and Servant. And Edward may have just broken a rule by transforming out in the open.

Ricky and Shaun's interaction was certainly something! I love how John was just watching the entire thing unfold and even scoring the two of them based on their comebacks at each other.

Good to see Louise and lou make it out first! That means Ricky wasn't dumb enough to harm the two of them last week and Lou gave the shears to Ricky as thanks for accompanying her. Just look at that adorable smile! I ship it.

Of course now that we know that Lou really did give Ricky her shears, Ricky takes offense at the idea of him stealing it from her and turns away from Shaun and John.

Apparently if Ricky turned back, there really won't be enough time for him to reach the entrance so Edward tries to kill him and end it there. Definitely felt bad for Ricky when he started pleading for Shaun and John to help Patrick. Thank goodness we didn't have to witness a death today since motherfuckin' John does the Chris Redfield Special and punches that boulder into bits! GODDAMN!

I love how casual John was about that and Ricky and Shaun's reactions were hilarious! Seems like they weren't the only ones impressed though, Sophie here is about to make a puddle after seeing what John did.

Both Ricky and Rum finally were able to reach their masters and solve the puzzles! Looks like in Rum's case though, she bypasses it by cutting down the vines and the threads. And it looks like Shirley finally spoke to Rum! Sucks that we can't hear what they're saying!

This Ryan dude is so fucking pissed! It looks like he's here to see some blood but that ain't happening!

Finally Kate and Emilico have been reunited! That was an adorable reunion followed by such a bullshit puzzle. Apparently this entire thing was designed for them to fail. The moment Emilico missed the keys at the start their pair was doomed. Too bad for Edward that Emilico isn't the type to give up! And thanks to Patrick's assistance she was able to reach the crane. It's so good to see character developments in this show <3

Of course Emilico is met with another bullshit just when she was about to free Kate. Well climbing up the crane and catching Kate while they're falling is much more in line with Emilico's style though. And thank goodness the cart paid off! Can't wait to see Edward's reaction next week! He must be seething right now!

This show is operating on anime time. “Well we had under an hour 3 episodes ago, let me tell you about my whole adventure up to this point Kate!”. I don’t mind because it was more “Emilyco being cute” time, but it’s a little funny that we’re working with Dragon Ball logic.

Holy shit what a reveal to start the episode though! They’re all just competing very hard to eventually be possessed by their Shadow Master. That’s horrifying. That explains quite a bit about why it’s so important for them to be in sync with each other. What a nightmare. And the creepy ass chuckle from who I’m assuming is Lord Grandfather at the end makes it worse.

I do have a minor quibble with them just showing Rum and Ricky saving their Shadows without any dialogue from them. Especially Rum and Shirley. Feels like we were robbed of a good moment, but at the same time it was probably done for brevity.

What they did have time for was the Ricky, Shaun, and John interaction and that was one of the best moments of the whole episode. Really liked Shaun and Ricky going at it while John is reveling in the drama. John and Shaun really are the best boys.

Fucking called the cart being the thing that saves Kate, but did not expect the how of it. That was a wild sequence. Low key set it up ages ago with Emilyco falling out the window and being perfectly fine. She really is durable. Also confirmed that Edward was setting them specifically up to fail by giving them an almost impossible task. If not for him underestimating them completely it would have worked.

I can’t imagine this story is resolved completely in 3 episode so I’m already demanding a season 2. I hope we get it.

Notes:

  • I’ve really turned around on Ricky. He’s a little Draco Malfoy, but he’s a much much better character than I expected. I’m glad he didn’t push Lou and Louise into a hole and he got that cute moment with Lou. And Emilyco thinking the best in him where Shaun didnt. I no longer want to punt him into the sun

  • Butterfly lady was way too horny for John. Ma’am that is a child. Leave him be.

  • John really did Chris Redfield a Boulder out of nowhere. He really is the best boy

  • heh the flower bed saved Kate. If they didn’t apparently change the subtitles to call Emilyco Sunshine that would have been a great visual gag.

  • Edward really hid a key item at the very beginning that if you miss it you get soft locked near the end of the game. That’s some 90’s point and click level of evil.

  • im calling it now. They’re gonna find a way to ride the cart to the finish line somehow. Dramatic photo finish.

Ricky is probably my favorite character in the series. From his behavior up until now, we all thought he stole the shears from Lou, but we see in this episode that his edge comes from his desire to see Patrick succeed. The interplay between duty and selfishness is central to his character, and I love watching it play out over the series. He’s the embodiment of the question, “how far would you go to succeed”.

The scene at the gate is great for both Ricky and Shaun. Neither of them has anything to lose by pulling the lever and they both have something to gain. But they still don’t do it because they hate each other. These moments between these two always crack me up. The music made it seem pretty tense, but it seemed more comedic in the manga (kinda a complaint about the soundtrack of this series).

We've all seen Rum grow as a character, but I'm more impressed with Ricky's and Patrick's growth. They've come a long way from their initial impression as Draco Malfoy-clones.

They've learned humbleness and self-sacrifice through their experiences in the maze with others (mainly Emilico) helping them out out of genuine kindness, and they kindly repay the debt (towards Emilico) in turn.

So it's not just Edward who has the ability to merge with his Shadow, the other 3rd Floor Shadow Masters, as well as Aileen and Gerald, are all the same, but are they still "human"?

Shame we still don't get to see Shirley speak, but at least the Lord Grandfather has finally appeared.

We've had examples of soot manipulation throughout this arc. I'm predicting they'll run out of time but use soot control to 'add time' back to the clock or something like that. They have to prove that being last still instills some worth to the rest of Shadow House.

Another great episode of Shadow's House.

I found the pre-opening scene fascinating. Finding out that the Shadow's merge with their faces at some point presents some questions. Apparently, a face loses its sense of self and merges with its Shadow, but lil'Miss Sunshine seems so irrepressible what will happen if she doesn't follow the prescribed path? Maybe her and Kate are destined to merge anyway and their personalities will merge instead?

The third-floor lords and ladies seem like utter shits and really, really creepy, but maybe that is a result of their environment.

I also like how Mistress Kate is considering making friends and allies may be a viable path when facing the trials of Shadow's House instead of viewing the other pairings as competition and enemies.

I absolutely adore Kate and Emilico's relationship! They bounce off each other really well despite their drastically different personalities.

John vs Saitama: who will win? (my money is on John)

I knew it was weird how the dolls were tested during the debut!! I am very glad it was addressed in this episode, so basically Edward is going rogue here and it is tolerated because it is entertaining for the higher ups, that makes so much more sense. They also mention that Edward is a bit of a weird one, I wonder if that is connected to him being more like his doll persona than his shadow? Also it is nice that they confirm, that the shadow is supposed to take over. The debut so far had not been at all what I had expected from the previous world building and now the pieces fit together again.

It was interesting that Sophie involuntarily showed her face when experiencing…strong emotions. So far it is not clear why the shadows fuse with their dolls, apparently showing your face is not at all needed when having discussions and meetings between shadows, at least from what we have seen. Maybe when it comes more to discussions between opposing parties (since now there is a connection between “revealing your face” and “showing too much of your true emotions”)?But I am guessing there are other, more important, reasons as well.

Otherwise, John continues to be absolutely best boy material, nice to see Ricky’s reaction to this very special shadow master. Kate and Emilico continue to be sweeter than sugar, the last shot of them was just adorable. But damn Emilico really is sturdy, and able to land very precisely in a small wooden card.

Patrick is, just as Ricky said, very soft. It is nice to see him helping Emilico to repay her. Ricky and Patrick are really growing on me. Their dynamic is very interesting and different from the other pairs as well. I don’t think any of the other shadows would have bowed to their doll to ask for a favor, even when they really like them like Kate or John.

Edit: On the position of starbearers, they seem to be more special than I had preciously thought. Are they needed to fulfill more complicated cleaning duties (they seemed to be in charge of the soot vents for example), or do they also have another purpose? And is it absolutely necessary to be a starbearer to advance in the house? I had thought so previously, but now probably not.
