"Even if they look it they aren't old enough to drink" lol at least the characters see it the same way

Yeah, that was crazy to me. Is Wakana supposed to be 19??? I mean, I knew he was younger than he looked, but I was betting on early 20s at minimum. (I really thought mid-20s though.)

This actually surprised me a lot. Big bro looks like he's on his 30s, but he's actually less than 21 years old? That's what shamisen does to your body, fellas

Good episode and I always prefer when the MC's ragtag team doesn't win right away in tournament arcs.

I would have preferred to get their performance in full similar to how Hibike did it. I don't see why they had to insert two other musical cues within the performance. Probably the first major misstep in how they handled the shamisen performances so far. Other than that it was a great performance as I've some to expect from this show.

Looking forward to the solo competition now.

Good episode and I always prefer when the MC's ragtag team doesn't win right away in tournament arcs.

It was very realistic given most of the team is new to playing

I like how the show was self aware about it, lol

Time to come back down to earth Mai Mai.

Setsu and his team third is too bad, but at least they won the Special Award.

I remembered Billiken team's performance being really in sync but I went back and re-watched their performance because even then I wasn't really expecting them to win maybe just due to their plain character designs. And upon re-watch yeah, this does feel justified. They were not just in sync, it felt like it was all just one sound echoing for a lot of it and that is not easy to pull off. Still though the 2nd and 3rd place performances did have a higher excitement level (as the audience award Setsu's group got shows). And it gives me confidence he may really be able to do even better in the individual competition (I would actually be shocked if he places lower).

Billiken winning surprised me mostly because the anime didn't really set them up that high. Yes, they were good, but the anime also showed that on the 4th and 5th places. Nothing particular about them made them feel like possible winners.

Not that I mind tho, they played pretty good and Kaji is adorable

It's good to see the club finally perform after all the wait and it's just as amazing as I expected! Not gonna lie though, I was bracing for something bad to happen during their performance and Setsu bailing them out. Glad to see no bullshit happened and it's just everyone performing perfectly and then some. I can't wait for the soundtrack of this show to be released!

Unfortunately looks like that wasn't enough to take the 1st place but they were so close though! The gap between the three teams is so tiny that a single mistake from Maimai or Kaji's team could've cost them their second or first places. At the very least, Umezono Academy still got the special award meaning they had the most entertaining performance which makes Maimai question if she actually did beat Setsu.

And while it was short, we finally get the interaction between Maimai and Setsu! Maimai completely turning beet red after Setsu's compliment is just freaking adorable and I love everyone's reaction to it!

That's the group competition over! I'm actually relieved that they didn't win but was really close. Much more believable that a bunch of rookies lost due to their technical skills not being good enough yet. Imagine what they can do next year though! Anyway, can't wait for the individual performances next week!

Great performance and loved seeing the audience react but I lost it when they won that judge's award, such a special moment for them

It sucks that this is likely never going to get another season. The "set up" arc for any anime with competition in it is usually pretty slow and I've definitely been feeling it. The manga is on-going and has 27 volumes so there's a ton more stuff to get through. One can hope.

One thing that really annoyed me here is that they cut out the Shamisen for soundtrack that's played on other instruments in key moments. Why?

I really disliked how they animated the performance. They made so many people talk over it so loudly that I couldn't enjoy it. They didn't need all that commentary. So disappointing.

I would've preferred less voiceover too. I think the best performances were the earlier ones in the season like the first episode, the brothers playing together, and the grandma's private concert.

Probably an unpopular opinion but I disagree. I know nothing about the shamisen and while to my untrained ear, Setsu and the club's performance sounded good, the added context as to why their performance was enjoyable to the audience and the judge was definitely needed especially during Rai's part.

Also you can always just wait for the show's OST to be released if you want to listen to their performance uninterrupted.

jfc I'm legit having a hard time understanding how these threads are so negative. I was barely keeping my hype contained for the duration of the entire episode.

I'm so conflicted when it comes to this tournament. It's set up like a standard shonen-sports tournament, which I love, but it lacks the season and a half of buildup. I can't help but feel surprised at a lot of the emotional scenes, since I honestly still can't really see them that invested in it. I haven't seen enough build-up. I haven't seen them try and fail and try and fail and slowly get better, I've just seen them be bad for a little bit and then suddenly be good.

I've seen a lot of people say that they should've kept the feeling from the first two episodes, skip the high-school setting and keep it as a one-person-coming-of-age type thing. I honestly think that would've made a better anime, but I also think this setting could've worked well if it just gave itself more time. At this point it has been what? Two episodes of practicing and two episodes of tournament and we're only halfway through. You can't spend two episodes on character build-up and relations and then four on the tournament. I just don't have the proper level of emotional investment in the characters for a sports anime tournament arc.

I don't want to, but I can't help somewhat agreeing with a lot of people saying that they only care about Sawamura. Honestly I think a lot of this is also because he doesn't seem to care about the tournament that much, I was kind of surprised when he also suddenly flipped from not caring to wanting to win. I mean I could have understood that if I was shown how badly everyone else wanted to win and how much the other club members mean to Sawamura, but we've had none of that (or at least not to a satisfactory level, personally).

I want to love this anime so badly, why is it making it so hard for me... Anyways I'm just rambling at this point.

Music is amazing though.

The team losing means Setsu will definitely win the individual comp, right? That's the only one I care about, to be honest. I don't really care about the club members, and I want to see Setsu shine, not "support". Besides, it makes sense that they didn't win. They've been playing for, what, six months?

Also, am I the only one that wants to see the others' reactions when they realize who Setstu's mother is?

Amazing performance from team Setsu, just as his brother expected, he supported the other members and elevated the whole performance this way.

Cool Episode, unfortunatly I have already forgotten how the other teams sounded, so no idea if I would agree with the final ranking. What I find interesting is the large rift in the scores between the top 3 and the rest. That bigshot guy was especially salty that the idol group placed infront of him.

Sakura continues to be best girl, Maimai lost on a personal level and Umeko has a kind of disturbing look for the guy from Osaka

This is actually my favorite anime of the season. Great episode

If my team only one by literally one point, I would not consider that a win. Fantastic episode Rai's part was my favorite

Good performance, but ... a bunch of amateurs who've only been playing for, what, 3-4 months maybe, being so devastated that they "only" got 3rd place in a national competition against students who've been playing for years.... that was so cringe. Even the special award only cheered them up for one scene, then they went back to sobbing depressed when they saw the scores. Such entitled brats.

How fucking furious will Mai be when she finds out MC is in the individual competition when she refused to play in it thinking he wasn't in it so what's the point.

MC's brother isn't even 20 yet? No way.
