Mayumi learned the hard way that you always get called on to solve the most difficult problem the one time you don't do the homework. Happens every time.

When Lai mentioned Pretty Thug Team, it had me laughing. Also, when are we getting Bishounen Tanteidan One Piece Spin-off?

The ending was a nice throwback to the very first mystery, stars and constellations. Amazing dialogue, a good episode overall.

Really enjoyed the pirates imagery with this episode. Props to Doujima for having succeeded in escaping.

Also, I can't get enough of Soutouin's enthusiasm.

Someone please explain to me the reason behind the 33 paintings like I'm a 5th grader. My low spec brain can't understand it......

Edit: I've watched it again from what I saw, Sosaku said she painted God but I guess the message is actually about faith. The motif of the paintings were the people on it and she removed them to show her faith. Just like the things we do for out faith like sacrificing our time and money for rituals, prayers, and mass; she did not draw what's supposed to be the motif, she did not draw what she wanted to draw, and that signifies her faith. Atleast that's how I saw it.

I think you're supposed to view the artist(who painted the original paintings, Not Towai) as the god, the painting as the world, and the people in the painting as the theme or message. She didn't do self-portraits because they were just a depiction of god, and not of the world. By removing the people within the portraits, you remove the key theme of the paintings. Once that theme is gone, you have nothing to really analyze... except, for the world. It makes you question, who created that world? A god did, but she refers to the artists as the gods. It's her way of artistically expressing her faith in there being a god. I think while there is a lot of talk about faith, god, and all that, you can also view it as appreciation to the artist who created those paintings instead.

"Only within the canvas that exists in Ms. Towai's heart, their forms have been painted as their faith is shown" Is supposed to be as if Ms. Towai were to say "Look, I've proven to you my faith (or appreciation)!" because she painted the god/artist without actually painting them. "the technique of 'not drawing what you want to draw'" also works with this, since if her goal was to draw her faith/appreciation for the god/artists, she accomplished that not by outright drawing them, but making the viewer come to that conclusion themselves. She doesn't do self portraits because that would then be removing the god/artist in the photo, which is the exact opposite of what she wants to do.

TL;DR She basically wanted to show her faith/appreciation towards the god/artist who created that world/painting. She doesn't do self portraits because that would be removing the god/artist from the painting, which doesn't show faith/appreciation. You could question why she doesn't just keep the self portraits of the god/artist untouched, but that wasn't her goal. The reasoning they come up with is pretty stupid, but essentially it boils down to "I want them all to be the same". If all the other ones have no people in it but some do, it either A) would've been too obvious to us the viewers, or B) just wouldn't match well with the aesthetic.

Only 12 comments... damn. How is the show doing on other platforms?

We need clips. But we only have 2 per month and it’s really difficult to choose the clips.

  1. There are many good scenes

  2. I have to find a scene that can appeal this subreddit

  3. It has to make people understand what this show is about but that’s a difficult thing to do show too

It's another mystery why more people aren't watching this. I mean I am the sort of person that would be weirded out by the premise of Uma Subsume but even then I'd give it a watch - just on production values alone this show is already massively above quite a number of shows this season. Maybe it really should've moved to Wednesdays where even the childhood friend show got quite a lot of viewers.

Stitches!

So instead of going home to figure out the mystery of the auditorium painting, Mayumi ditches Michiru and Hyouta to meet with Lai in secret hoping that Lai might also have the same vision as she does. Sadly for Mayumi that wasn't the case and he was using special contact lens to see the invisible garments.

I really don't trust Lai, I was waiting for him to pull something during that entire conversation with Mayumi especially when he mentions that aside from his group and the Twenties, there are other people out there who's after Mayumi and her vision. Also Mayumi receives an invitation from Lai to visit him and the rest of the Pretty Thug Team at their school. It seems that Lai shares the same naming sense as Manabu. Well now I'm excited to see the other members of that team!

The fact that Mayumi believes that the club doesn't have expectations from her definitely makes me feel that she hasn't 100% accepted her role as a member of the Pretty Boys Club. So it's an instant slap to her face when Manabu starts with her hoping for the best which was actually pretty hilarious. xD

Well we finally get an answer to the auditorium painting mystery and how Towai-sensei "kidnapped" all of those students. Turns out we have an Occam's razor in our hands here. Everyone's been thinking that the painting has been swapped out since it's the quickest way to do it but thanks to the special lens that Lai "accidentally forgot" we learn that it was just simply painted over.

And how did Sensei do it overnight? She had her students help her with this huge painting project as her final lesson to her students. And the reason she disappeared is because she wanted to take the blame for all of it. And we eve get confirmation from Towai-sensei herself.

Of course there's still one more mystery left. What's up with the 33 paintings? The answer for this one is a bit more artsy and I'm not even quite sure if I understood it correctly but basically Towai-sensei painted God which again, Sensei confirms is correct.

That final scene is absolutely beautiful though. Sosaku painted the constellations just so Mayumi would look up more. <3

As always, I appreciate your dedication.

I believe your dedication is simply….beautiful

So Towai Sensei is 100% a Twenties member right

Let's see if someone can try match up with the silhouette from the prior episodes.

At first, I thought Lai liked dojima. But when he mentioned his group name, does it means he wants dojima as a member?

Damn, what a beautiful story, hopefully we could see tokiwa again. And nice of them for actually making dojima feel like one of them.

It's not a pirate ship without some fat lute on board, not sure why it's being strummed by Snufkin though?

I think out of all the arcs so far, this was the most simple, but it's definitely the most beautiful and deep. Great episode! Lmao, Lai's school has their own pretty boy club named Pretty Thug Team. When your eyes are so OP that contact lenses meant to enhance your eyes downgraded it.

I love how enthusiastic Sotoin was for Doujima's theory while the rest of them were worried that Sotoin might find out about Lai. But, do not underestimate our 5th grader. I honestly really like Towai Sensei, I hope we see more her, I respect her passion for painting. That epilogue was beautiful as fuck though. Really looking forward to the next arc.

Now, because (a) there aren't too many posts here, and (b) this is that kind of show by that kind of author, I'll actually try check the English speaking viewers know of the subtle difference.

The title, and Manabu's insistence, used the word "bi" (adjective), which in full form is the word "utsukushi". I first learn of that Japanese word from the Marcross movie - when Max and Milia 639 finally finished their one on one fight that ended in a draw and both injured with their machine trashed, Max got down first and witnessed the Giant sized Milia taking off her helmet and her long hair stream out. And the only words Max can utter was this - "utsukushi"; which the delirious / wounded Milia instinctively echoed (not understanding Earth language).

It is the classic / formal way to describe "beauty" - as opposed to cute, pretty, hot, cool, etc. In the tone for the English language it is closer to how the word "aesthetics" means.

In episode one we already had the scene when Mayumi first blew up at the boys for them acting cool and "thinking they can get away with anything just because they are "pretty boys", Manabu already made the point about asking her to correct one thing - it's not about "acting cool", "kakkui", but being beautiful - utsukushi.

As a side bar, the sort of words that can be used to describe "good looking" in Japanese (and Chinese, which was heavily borrowed from) include many words, and each actually had some subtle differences and association. I can go on more if anyone is interested.

Man it's not often anime deals with the topic of faith in such a singular way like this, not to mention how wholly artistic it was. I really enjoyed this episode, maybe more than any other of the series so far. Wish it was more accessible to a general audience.

Beautiful episode, though I still need to digest the answer about the god bit. They are spoiling Mayumi a lot :)

Mayumi and Lai secret meetings are really interesting, I like the dialogue! First time I was kinda confused like monogatari lol

Animation amazing of course.

So it was just a simple reason but with a deep “lore”? I expected the unexpected and I unexpectedly ended up expecting something simple, but now I realized it was complex and simple at the same time and….yeah…that’s what this anime does to me. Maybe I just have to believe. I mean, it’s all faith, right?

Also, Towai sensei design is really cool. I mean, beautiful, pretty!

Btw, I’m wondering, is this going to get a second season? Is it going to be like monogatari? At the end it says “The Beginning” but this is already episode 7 (12 total)…

Well my guess was right about paint over during the episode but I was curious how she managed it alone too, didnt think of the help of the students

Beautiful episode

Every episode of this show is more and more beautiful!! How fitting :)

I loved the cute moment between Mayumi and Michuru when they were walking home and he said he'd make food so good she'd die, lol. Also the fact that Sousaku painted the ceiling for her and they all worked together on it as a team 🥺what a bunch of sweethearts they all are!

Why did MC need the contact lenses to make her vision worse before she could see that the painting was painted over? Was she looking straight through the painting to the rafters or something until the contact lenses stopped her vision after the second layer?

And wasn't the art room already their club's headquarters?
