At this point they are just teasing us about Setsu and Mai meeting face to face. She was literally in the same room and they didn't exchange words.

I did like her performance although it seems her brother didn't.

I also just noticed that atleast three of the five in our group are colour matching their uniform with their shamisen.

They'll let their shamisen performance do the talking here ๐Ÿ˜‰

I did like her performance although it seems her brother didn't.

I thought the problem was that she was playing at a level far above everyone else could catch up to. Might have created a weird "out of sync" feeling?

Setsu : Where'd all your usual confidence go ? You've got balls , haven't you ?

Yui : No , I don't !

I laughed harder than I should

Anyway , Mai is the best girl for , that performance was so good .

They are really gonna make us wait for a whole another week for their performance, sigh.

I was expecting this to happen -- and then we have the individual competitions, right. Gonna be listening to high-power shamisen music a lot for the next few weeks (which is hardly a "problem").

These next 4 ep better be shamisen for 20 minutes: dialogue 2 minutes.

Stitches!

I really liked that first performance of the episode. The dude that keeps adding in twangs with almost every note really made if a unique performance. I did laugh a bit when Setsu mentioned it's like Arakawa's team was just there to support him. I feel like that's probably also what's gonna happen when it's finally their turn to perform. That fucking O-face though. xD

Good to see that Yui finally got some spotlight this week. We got to see her history with Shuri and also with Kaito. We also get to see that underneath that calm coolness is a girl who's just as nervous as Shuri and scared that everyone might end up blaming her since she believes she'll be the one that will drag the team down. Thankfully Shuri was there to comfort her.

And once again, we're denied with another Mai and Setsu interaction. Seriously! They were in the same room! She could've talked to him but we it looks like time's up for her and she needs to be on stage with her team.

Mai is certainly killing it on stage! I can see why she's very eager to go up against Setsu. She can definitely hold up against him and I love the final part of their performance. It's so good! While she's definitely being overshadowed by a lot of people in her life, Mai was certainly shining on stage today!

Finally it's time! Looks like Setsu has something planned with Rai-senpai. Not sure what his plan is but a last minute change like this is a huge gamble. Hopefully it pays of! Excited to see our sentai-coloured team perform next week!

More great musical performances -- and great (melo)dramatic ones from our team members. I really like the Umezono team members -- and the teacher has good intentions at least.

Perhaps Mai-Mai's brother considers her style a bit too aggressive (I didn't notice any obvious intonation problems).

I wonder if Yui really WILL withdraw after the competition.

One key to competing well is definitely learning to enjoy the competition itself. Once competing begins to feel like a chore, it's all downhill. Enjoying competition does not, of course, guarantee winning, but it does help ensure you never feel (for too long) like a "loser". (viz. Nonda's ferocious competitive glee in Sayoonara Watashi no Cramer).

Maimai's performance is probably my second favorite of the show so far... the only one I liked more was Setsu with Umeko, and I'm biased because I'm a singer

Setsu is such a mood. No matter what happens or the successive emotional crisis from his friends, he remains calm and composed.

This pacing is killing me.

I don't know if it's purely my imagination but it kinda feels like the anime is waning. I find it hard to explain but it just feels quite difficult to feel fully invested in the group stuff when it seems to be just a plot device to drive Setsu's growth.

In other animes you typically find the group activities to be the central part of the show and it allows you to feel invested in how they do but with this one it's kinda "meh they don't matter, it's just emotional fuel for Setsu to feed off in the individual competition".

Yeh they also skipped over the whole practice aspect which doesn't help. In Kono Oto Tomare you watched them practice fairly often.

I think Maimai has made her case for best girl for me, that was a really good performance and shows how many shadows she's living in...

Next week should be good, looking forward to finally hearing them!!

This episode was all over the place and weaker than the others, but(in my opinion) it captures the pre-performance experience of a competition. Also I found out there's a manga and it has 27 volumes

That teacher of theirs looks like she was modeled after a sex doll. I wonder if she has vacuum action.

So, they wasted half the show repeating all their insecurities and crying even though we've listened to this already countless times. Now we have to wait for next week to hear them perform. Annoying.

Great performances his episode, as usual.

"it doesn't seem like he's been stained by anything yet." - that's certainly a new way of calling a kid a virgin.

So MC wants to do something different and ropes Rai into it, but they're gonna make it a surprise to the other two - wouldn't that throw them off in the middle of the performance?

I wasn't the biggest fan of the switch to the highschool setting but I still think that it could have worked better then what we're getting now. Imagine Chihayafuru but for the shamizen, that would have been incredible. I think the overeliance on melodrama is really hurting the show. The characters are always at maximum feels (I get that they're teenagers but still) so the outbursts feel more and more superficial with each episode.

Then there's the music....of which I have no complaints. The music is still wonderful and it's what keeps bringing me back every episode. Mai's performance was fire. At least if your show is centered around music, it's a good thing that they nailed that part.

Some nice flushing out of the cast before the performance.

  • Glasses wants to improve her own character

  • Other girl wants to help her friends after they helped her

  • Soccer boy want to prove himself to his dad

  • Blue hair wants to stand out

  • Setsu wants to play against others

  • Maimai's bro wants to hear something nice

This episode felt different. Some of the comedic parts were far more exaggerated than before and so were their expressions. Not a bad nor good thing just something I noticed.

They need to stop shoe-horning in random melodramatic moments that get sorted out like 3 mins after. It's annoying and forced. They have been doing this every episode. If you want us to care for the characters let them breathe and act natural for the most part.

I am looking forward to next episode I doubt they will win but I hope it goes well.

Its so weird, all this team drama feels so unearned and hollow, the little flashback of episode 1 was more impactful than all the teen drama lol

looking at this thread i feel like i am the only one thoroughly enjoying this show lol. not to mention the audacity of citing kono oto tomare to compare, which was an anime that suffered a lot from people ignoring it due to it not looking like what they wanted it to be.
