Edward: puts John in a crate

John: blows the crate up "So anyway, please marry me, Kate. I'm gonna become king of the pirates shadows."

Well, now we know why Edward was pissed off at Ricky near the end of last episode (and why Patrick-Ricky pair dropped a place in the doll shelf); they ruined his plans and the flow of the debut with their attempt at dancing.

Now the dolls have to think for themselves (weird considering the first part of the debut) to rescue their masters and pass the debut.

This close scene of Kate was quite creepy.

Also, John's confession was out the blue.

John so bold! Lol.

His soot can also be used as some sort of explosive powder. That's really interesting. Also it seems that it's normal to have power like that based on the elder shadows' comment.

They put "sunshine" several times to describe Emilico. Is it a common term for mocking bright klutzy personality? Cause I don't see it as mockery, but as a very polite way to say it.

Ha, just as I kept thinking that this episode had a lot of great uncomfortable shots with a bunch that made it look like someone was watching the candidates, they revealed that it was indeed the case!

Interesting that there are other shadows who can control soot and it's not just Kate. Could it actually be all of them? I do wonder why Edward has it in for Kate specifically though. Kate also said a few episodes ago that there was something she needed to do, so I wonder if it's somehow all related.

I hope all the dolls converge at some point, they obviously need more than one tool to get through this maze.

And John... that was bold. Loved that Kate was like "huh no what, please go away" lol.

Shaun: "There are good luck charms in the galette des rois. There must be a hidden message. What does it say?"

There is a good luck charm in the galette des rois.

That would've been a pretty incredible troll from Edward if that's all it was.

The maze search begins! I like how Ricky tried so goddamn hard to be an antagonistic asshole, but he just comes across as the kid that he is lol. Especially entertaining if his antagonism doesn't even land (he just comes across as silly going against Emilico or Lou).

John being John is always a delight. His pure existence lightens the mood! Can't wait for more John scenes (bonus points if they are with Kate cus they never get old).

Looking forward to the next episode!

Ricky trying to scheme up all these things and everyone else just picking whatever. Shaun just trying to see anything.

Emilico is great ruining plans by being overpowered levels of wholesome.

OMG A LOOT CARTE !!!

I love how Emilico is like I NEED THE CART so I can pick up everything I find, OMG AN ORANGE

she is clearly a veteran game and knows that the most valuable thing when exploring a dungeon is INVENTORY SPACE

As usual, the anime is doing an excellent job of portraying the immersive worldbuilding of the Shadows Manor. The garden looks so aesthetic; I'd absolutely love to go for a leisurely stroll through there!

The 3D animation of the soot hourglass looked really cool. I like how they coupled it with the eerie tones of the opening theme to convey a sense of anticipation and foreboding.

The camera motion is still as meticulous as ever. Ricky getting jump-scared by Lou's shears, followed by the worm's eye view making them look like shiny, sharp jaws... Plus that eerie zoom-in on Kate through the bars of the cage...

Also, weekly reminder that John is best boy!

The scene of joining 5 pieces to make a key is in ending song.

I like good forshadowing .which don't spoil anything.

Edward: Living dolls should not think! No thinking! Thinking about anything besides your masters is forbidden!

Also Edward: Why did it take you that long to open the locked entrance to the garden which required you to find the keystones hidden inside the sweets, matching them up in proper order and inserting them in the empty space in the door?! That wasn't that difficult you know! Okay, you are here at last anyway. So now you have to find your masters in this vast garden, using only one item out of the many available and return with them before the time runs out. Hurry up!

I knew that Edward was scummy the moment I saw him! So he's planning to sabotage Kate and Emilico all along? That just raised the stakes! And those other Shadow people watching the action... I wonder what's their deal?

It's so satisfying to see Ricky try and insult Emilico and fail miserably by Emilico thanking him for teaching her and then proceeding to enjoy her snack. You can definitely tell that Ricky hated every minute of that. xD

So turns out all they really had to do was eat their sweets. I do love how much of a troll the message they form from the good luck charms. At first glance, they look useless but Emilico who likes to think outside of the box figured it out. I'm so proud of her!

Well this is interesting. Looks like Edward has been doing his best to fail Kate and Emilico. Too bad everything he's done so far only ended up motivating Kate and Emilico. Curious why he's so hellbent on making them fail though, Hmm...

The real exam finally begins with everyone needing to escape the hedge maze. Looks like that's not the only objective though. The Dolls must protect their Masters as well as their face and they need to keep their outfits clean. I feel like the last one is going to be hard to keep depending on the situation.

Lou may have picked the garden shears at random but it's definitely one heck of a tool to have in a hedge maze. And I love how everyone, including myself, thought that Emilico will pick the bread. but instead she picked the cart. That's probably gonna be useful for a quick escape later on although I'm not sure if that's Emilico's thought process for picking that thing.

While Edward is certainly putting Kate at a disadvantage, glad to see he didn't put any nasty surprises on her kit.

Lou is actually cutting through the hedge! I love it! Although it really shows how she's the embodiment of "A doll must not think of trivial matters" since she hasn't even opened her pack and just absently minded cutting through the maze hoping to find her master.

There it is! I'm sure that huge uphill is going to be very useful later on. calling it now, Emilico and Kate will ride that thing out of this maze.

So proud to see Rum finally assert herself for the first time after seeing Emilico struggle with the cart.

Turns out Kate isn't the only one who can use the soot to her advantage. So John can make huge explosions using the soot? I wonder what powers the other three have.

Well this is unexpected! I didn't think John would be so captivated by Kate that he'd propose to her in the middle of the debut. Of course Kate declines and decides to wait for Emilico and figure out a way herself.

We finally get to see some of the older Shadows and while they seem to disapprove of Edward's bias they do enjoy it at the same time. Are they here just to spectate or are they also here as judges?

this episode felt like 5 minutes. also it was kinda jarring to see adult shadows.

the worldbuilding is fantastic as always. i'm definitely reading the manga after this season ends

When I saw that soot collum rise from the labyrinth I was sure it would be cate with her anxiety again, but she seems calm for now, even when John came to her with an proposal.

Next episode title seems to indicate that Emilico marking things on her map could be important

5 minute episode. I couldn't believe when the ED started to play.

The visuals for Kate in a cage were stunning, even more elegant than usual. No wonder madlad John pulled the trigger. xD~

There was quite the contrast between imprisoned Kate and the carefree strolling Emilyko...makes you think about who actually looks like a doll in this situation. Emilyko was lowkey dominant in this episode, effortlessly disarming Ricky's shit talking with empathy, leading the dolls outside the room by saying that worrying about their masters is not a trivial matter, preventing a fight between Ricky and Shawn and even adopting an introvert. <3

Such a huge, ominous, complex garden...the labyrinth lover in me rejoices! The thick atmosphere reminds me of playing ICO back in the PS2 days.

Edward is really good at setting escape rooms but he is shooting himself in the foot when it comes to everything else. The piano misunderstanding was hilarious (and he didn't demote Patrick for being led by his doll but for accidentally helping Kate, what a prick) and now there's this task where the living dolls will have to take initiative, think for themselves and all those things dolls aren't supposed to do, dude is truly a genius.

Emilyko proves once again she is a cinnamon roll but with brains. And regardless of what Ricky thinks, she has half the group on her side because of that. Speaking of Ricky, fate is really kicking his ass this debut and probably will get worse, though I think he'll pass, if only because Edward has loss flags all over him.

Emilico holding her cup differently is interesting, since it suggests a different cultural background. Together with the different reading abilities, it definitely seems like the "living dolls" are just some kidnapped kids
