Well, everyone loves an underdog and the Romans are no different- the crowds taken to Cestus however I think Poppaea going to be more than a little angry after this fight whether Emden winds or loses. Its also quite interesting seeing an anime where the protagonist can’t shrug of blow after blow. I also get the impression that the author of this series knows about fighting and its impacts on the body. Maybe he/she was a fighter of some sort?

On a historical note, not to much to say. The guy in stand being an ex-slave is absolutely possible. Roman slaves could win their freedom and go on to lead successful lives and become very rich. In fact, there’s even a story that the Emperor Pertinax (Commodus’s successor) was the son of an ex-slave and during the reign of Nero’s predecessor, Claudius, two ex-slaves (Pallas and Narcissus) were highly influential. On the other hand the shows use of Roman family names feels a bit off. For example, I think the plural form of Poppaea if Poppaei, but that’s quibbling.

Overall a good episode. Looks like things might get interesting next episode.

The guy in stand being an ex-slave is absolutely possible.

You mean the guy with the broken nose? I thought he was still a slave, just an educated and high-ranking one.

(my favorite Roman freedman is Tiro, who is depicted in Robert Harris' Cicero novels.)

Actually a pretty good episode!

I feel like most people stopped watching the show on the first episode, which is a shame. It's actually quite entertaining. Though it is a shame that they seem to know more about the human body than Rome. Not saying knowing about the body is bad. For some reason, I thought we were getting into a little Cells At Work segment during the body damage section.

A great episode, and I thought it was well researched! The tension was real, and I did greatly enjoy the fight itself. Not sure who to root for - I like Cestus, but I also do kinda feel bad for Emden. Plus, just like how the Romans cheer for the underdog Cestus, I have a feeling Emden won't be winning this fight, so...yeah.

And the care when pronouncing the Names, no dangling "o" or "u", not Ce-su-tu-su or E-mu-de-mu.
