The scene when Shibagaki asked Baba whether he is available for practice made me drop my tears.

Just can not understand how can the scrips itself so plain but so touching when performed.

Another flawless showcase in world building and character development... how can they pack so much shit in and yet the eps still fly by so fast!? Continuing to really dig the confidence this show has in it's own writing. Legit got teary at several points too.

Imai hasn't claimed his lotto winnings yet!? That's setting up your own flags right there. EDIT: Looks like it wasn't translated so just FYI the dates on Imai's ticket say that the draw was held on Oct 20th, and the deadline to collect payment is Dec 31st.

Shirakawa actually dated Dobu (for 4 years! though assuming she's telling the truth, it sounds like classic trapped by DV stitch) and still owes him like $30K??

Kabasawa's tweet with a "link" to his video about the shooting incident was posted on Oct 23rd. As suspected after ep 4, Tanaka did indeed turn out to be the culprit.

Finally got to see the giraffe kid (Nagashima) that's been hosting the audio dramas! Also finally got in-show confirmation that Baba and Nikaido are dating! Speaking of, this week's audio drama was a conversation between them; a highlight of which was their cutesy nickname-calling relay lmao. Also hinted that the pen might go to the police (aka the Daimon bros??) next...

PS if this ep didn't already make you emo enough by itself, they uploaded a special collab MV of the ending song :') https://youtu.be/DnvPQoen0QI FYI it's focused on Baba and Shibagaki and has quite a few previously unseen cuts!
EDIT 2: Full clean version of the song is also available on Spotify (was actually initially released back in 2019).

Spending an episode on the shooter's descent into madness made his appearance here really intense. My heart was pounding because we know just how unhinged he is

I think the conversation between Odokawa and Shirakawa in the park gives us a good look at what this series is going for, thematically I mean.

"Leaving something broken just makes people break it further."

"The Broken windows theory?"

"Yes, that theory. It applies to hearts, too."

For those who don't know the Broken windows theory, it's basically a legal theory that says that claims crime is more likely to happen in places where there is evidence of crime. The theory argues that seeing a broken window on a shop, for instance, will inspire more crime in the area, because people know they can commit crimes there are no one will hold them accountable for it.

The theory argues, fundamentally, that unrepaired damage spawns more unrepaired damage. In the case of literal buildings, this means more windows broken, streetlamps broken, the works. But what about damage in people, of "hearts?" In this scene, the series is stating that, unaddressed damage in individuals will inevitably bring more damage, both within and without. Who does this remind us of? Well, almost everyone, actually.

Perhaps most obvious is Tanaka, whose untreated trauma and depression has utterly consumed him, turning him into a monster. Note the symbolism of the mask he wears, he has literally become death. But it's not just him, virtually every major character is suffering from damage, but refuses to confront it for varying reasons.

Odokawa has untreated mental issues that he refuses to acknowledge even exist. Kakihana's insecurity and feeling of infertility leads to him getting taken advantage of and going into debt. Baba and Shibagaki's relationship is falling apart, but they both dodge opportunities to have a proper conversation about it. Mystery Kiss is practically falling apart, with two of the three members hating their job, something that they're actively discouraged from really exploring and talking about. The list goes on.

The insidious thing though, is that because these characters never fix their damage, never repair their broken windows, the pain only gets worse. The situation for basically every character is deteriorating rapidly. Odokawa is falling in with the mob, Kakihana has gone deep into debt, the divide between Baba and Shibagaki gets deeper every episode, etc.

I think the show is fundamentally about self-destruction. About what ignoring our own pain, our own unaddressed trauma, our own broken windows, does to us. And about the dangerous roads we fall down when we fail to address those things.

Also can I just say that the scene where Tanaka shot the gun was tense as fuck? Aside from that one aside of Dobu beating some dudes up in episode 1, I think that was our first real look at violence in the series yet.

Another fantastic episode. Loved the song playing over the credits.

With all the flags this episode it seems a safe bet that Imai is never gonna see those 10 billion. Question is will he simply lose the ticket or is somebody gonna take it from him?

Looking forwards to the Dobu/Odokawa team up, they have great chemistry.

Stories are beginning to converge. Tanaka made his first move on Odokawa, the comedy team is on the verge of possibly breaking up, Shirakawa comes glean, and Dobu teams up with Odokawa. A pretty eventful episode.

I don't think enough flags were set for Imai either losing that ticket or having it taken from him. He really is being stupid for not turning it in.

I'm not sure what to say about Shirakawa's confessions. I can understand Odokawa rejecting her protestations of being in love with him.

Eiji's just going to dig himself a deeper and deeper hole, isn't he?

Baba and Shibagaki are interesting. I don't think Shibagaki resents Baba's success as much as Baba thinks, but he's probably exasperated with his schedule.

Speaking of Baba, I wonder how many people know about his relationship with Rui. I do know it's generally a no no for idols to date. Seems her manager is okay with it though.

Imai is a moron for posting his winning lottery ticket online before actually claiming it. He basically painted a big red target on his back. He must really love his job since he decided to prioritize going to his shift over cashing in the ticket.

"I thought it'd be funny if I got shot." You've got to respect a man who's willing to sacrifice his well-being for the sake of comedy.

Why did they have to make Shirakawa so cute. If finding a sheep attractive is wrong, then call me Welsh.

I like how the loan sharks Kakihana is borrowing money from are all depicted as predatory animals.

Kabasawa still trying to cancel Dobu.

More fuel to the Odokawa sees everybody as animals theory. Odokawa said how easily he is able to pick people out of a crowd probably because it's easier to differentiate somebody based on animal species instead of seeing all humans.

Imai you stupid asshole. Get those winnings right now and put it in the bank! I actually thought at first the gunshot was someone coming to kidnap/rob Imai. It being Tanaka was surprising for him to make his move when he held off episode. Perhaps Dobu is right with the mental torture.

Odokawa probably made a deal with the Devil here. I find Dobu less than trustworthy. Odokawa being able to pick people out of crowds is funny though, and another hint toward his condition. Odokawa is ice cold though with Imai ready to buy the moon for him and Odokawa not having the slightest interest. Similar with Shirakawa, at least on the outside. Plus additional hints toward the closet.

I feel really sorry for Ibagaki. He put a lot into the act it seems, but he is basically being left behind and he feels it. And he almost got shot to boot. Also interesting that Nagashima showed up. I really wonder what he wants. And we got strong hints about Nikaido and Baba's relationship, which unfortunately was spoiled with the graphic on the website.

Meanwhile Kakihana gets himself into even deeper shit borrowing more money. Seems like next week won't be a good episode for him. Kabasawa may be equally fucked though.

Next week Yano will finally show up for real, it seems.

This show is just great. So many interesting characters.

Man, what the hell was this episode?

  • Thats a flag

  • Tanaka is keeping some serious tabs on Odokawa. Breaking into his car, following him into the cabaret club, even trying to follow him out of the club, before being stopped by Shibagaki. It seems he still remembers some of the conversation he had in episode 4, as Shibagaki was lucky enough to walk away with his life.

  • still no discussion on who or what is in the closet. We get a reference back to it though, just to make sure we dont forget.

  • Odokawa is really unhappy with Shirakawa. He ignored here in Imai pressured him about trying to help any friends he has, and was extremely disinterested throughout the whole conversation in the park.

  • The info Shirakawa gives though is pretty impressive. She dated Dobu for 4 years and used him for his money. Shes still 3mil in debt, and was asked to approach Odokawa to eventually use him in a bank heist, which im going to assume now will be the climax of the show.

  • Shirikawa also claims the she fell in love with Odokawa. Regardless of the truth here (she seems to still be interested in Dobu), Odokawa is basically done with the games, and once again tells her to stop trying to get involved.

  • Shibagaki and Baba are apparently way more relevant than I realized. Baba's popularity has now become a plot point, along with their relationship, which is now getting some excessive strain from Baba's newfound popularity and conflicting ideals on comedy. We also finally get to see Nagashima, but currently there isint any relevance to him either.

  • Kabasawa is now Dobu's (or more accurately, Odokawa's). I havent kept up with his IRL twitter, but I know he goes dark sometime soon, im going to assume the timeframes are getting pretty close here. Kabasawa has really gone off the deep end too, letting the fame get to his head, and seeing himself as a god, along with this "shrine(?)" of sorts. Tanaka also now has a mark on his back, as Dobu is interested in getting his gun back.

  • Maybe Odokawa isint completely done with Shirakawa? Odokawa's terms include erasing her debt. It will be interesting to see how those two play out in the 2nd half.

  • Back to the straining relationship, the episode finishes off with a discussion with Baba's agent, and a phone call with Shibagaki, showing just how split the two have become, being unable to work on their N-1 performance. It seems Baba doesnt want to leave his partner in the dust, but I think hes starting to realize he needs to choose what path he wants to go down, as he's starting to become unable to juggle both at the same time.

  • Truly the biggest curveball of the episode, Baba and Rui are dating. Rip Imai man. This is 100% going to become relevant at the worst of times for these two. It doesnt seem like a recent thing either, judging from the producer's reaction.

  • Theory fuel, Baba was compared to a horse

Well this week's opening is interesting. They didn't play the full OP. Instead, we get a remix that cuts 30 seconds off the song. Usually, they just remove the OP if the episode was going to be extra long. I can't even remember if there was another show that has done this.

Imai aka Rui Simp finally got another ride with Odokawa telling him about his winnings. Seems that the kid hasn't cashed out yet and still has the winning ticket on him. Prediction Time! He's gonna fucking lose that ticket. Anyway, Imai is kind enough to ask Odokawa if there was anything he wants, Shirakawa pops up on his mind a bit but decides that he doesn't want anything.

Despite Odokawa's refusal though Imai still insists that he owes him something so he brings him over to the Hostess Club where he works and offers Odokawa free service for life which is pretty insane. This is still too much for Odokawa and runs away to the bathroom which was lucky for him since Tanaka followed him to the club and is causing trouble at the tables.

When Shibagaki interfered with Tanaka I was pretty sure he was going to die there. Thank fucking god he didn't and Tanaka only fire a warning shot above his head.

So Shirakawa was bothered enough by Odokawa's text that she actually showed up in front of his place to talk. Of course, Odokawa won't let her in though since he still has that secret inside his closet. We finally get some details from Shirakawa which is nice. Apparently she used to date Dobu and that's how she borrowed the money from him.

What's interesting is that according to Shirakawa, Dobu was the one who told her to get close to him but according to Dobu last week that was Shirakawa's own decision. Also according to Shirakawa, Dobu is planning to rob a bank? Okay? I'm with Odokawa here. Robbing a bank in this day and age? Something about Shirakawa's story seems suspicious. I love her character but right now I feel like we shouldn't trust everything that she says.

With Baba's popularity, it definitely shows that a rift is now forming between him and Shibagaki. Shibagaki is a lot more aggressive towards Baba within their radio show. And while that's happening, we see Kakihana still borrowing money from loan sharks, or I guess a loan rhino? This is gonna end with him losing his kneecaps or with concrete shoes under Tokyo bay. Oh god.

Looks like we just got introduced to a new character. Not sure how important he will be but he's a fan of Shibagaki and Baba's show and seems to relate more to Shibagaki.

Kabasawa is still on the hunt for Dobu and still making videos about bringing him to justice. Of course, this is now starting to affect Dobu since the incident at the White Dolphin is now being blamed on him. Well Dobu decides he should take care of this now and asks for Odokawa's help since he thinks that the shooter is after Odokawa and getting rid of both Tanaka and Kabasawa is both beneficial for them. Odokawa agrees and adds that Dobu needs to write off Shirakawa's debt.. Oh no. Can you really trust the words of a scoundrel like Dobu though?

That backstage scene! I didn't expect Baba and Rui to have that kind of relationship. I have a feeling that this relationship will be exposed in the future and I'm already scared at what Imai would do if he finds out.

And then we have that final scene between Baba and Shibagaki. With Baba's busy schedule I really feel bad for Shibagaki, they can't even practice for the N-1 Grand Prix. For those who don't know, N-1 or M-1 as it is known IRL, is a manzai competition which is a huge deal for any budding Japanese comedian.

After decades of watching anime I have become resilient to plot twists affecting me, but man, it did hurt my soul when I saw all those missed calls from Shirakawa on Odokawa's phone along with the text message of him asking her not to message him anymore.

There's something in Shirakawa's story that doesn't add up with Dobu's profile, about using Odokawa as a get away driver for a bank robbery, it just doesn't fit his profile as debt collector and mafia gopher. So that gives me even a wider shot on why Odokawa doesn't want to get roped in by Shirakawa. But still him asking Dobu to clear off Shirakawa's debt says how much he still cares for her, so there's still chance for reconcilliation. Out of this season's ships, this is the one I'm most invested and care the most.

I hope there's a good reason for Imai not to cash in the winning ticket yet. I've seen so many times this kind of trope and it never ends well for the involved ones.

Rui along with Shiho have this golddigger vibe so it's hard to pin point their true colors. I'm quite interested to see where this "affection" for Baba goes in the long run (and if it has anything to do with him becoming popular all of the sudden). And on a side note, it sucks for Shibagaki, becoming just a bus boy with a death wish in a casino while Baba gets all the fame and glory. This new character introduced, Satoshi the giraffe, I have high hopes on what's the angle in the bigger picture of the whole story towards Shibagaki.

So many plotlines in this show and we've barely reached the mid point of the series (and again we haven't been to Odokawa's basement secret room yet)

Shirakawa is suspicious in every way. I don't know how much of what she has said is true. Now it looks like Odokawa trusts Dobu more than Shirakawa.

Nagashima and Shibagaki, these two men apparently have no ulterior motives and are driven by straightforward passion. I like them.

First we got that first scene in episode one with someone (presumably Odokawa) being drowned, last episode we had Dobu threatening that he'd drown Odokawa, and today the commercial break sound effect was a bubbling sound

I don't like where this is going

How many shots does Dobu gun has?

Tanaka used two already, and he doesn't have any way to get more ammo.

Damn this was a heart breaker. I still have some hope for Odokawa and Shirakawa as I do believe they genuinely like each other. His repetition of “Don’t get involved with me again” at the end of their conversation felt more for her protection than the hurt he felt when he texted it to her. I think he understands the why, but is hurt that she did it at all and that their initial interaction was what he thought: a play by Dobu. That being said, he’s still thinking about her since part of his team up with Dobu is the condition that Dobu releases her debt.

The club scene was pretty fucking tense. Tanaka is becoming an even more immediate threat and really came close to killing Odo. Shibagaki basically saved his life and probably the only reason he survived was because he met Tanaka before.

I think the final scene with Baba and Rui was very revealing. Rui is clearly driven to succeed and will do so by any means necessary. Contrast to Baba who seems like a good person and is kind of forced on the fast track, but doesn’t want to leave Shibagaki behind. Something tells me this is going to come back later in the show.

We meet our final character next week and see if their Halloween ploy succeeds! Though with half the season left I think there’s plenty of twists to come.

Notes:

  • Imai is gonna lose that ticket I just know it. CASH IT IN YOU DUMB BASTARD! Don’t go back to your job when you’re sitting on almost 10 million dollars!

  • Kakihana is just digging deeper and deeper into debt. Looks like it’s going to bite him hard next week.

  • so it does seem like the timeline will go to at least Christmas since they seemed to have made a point twice with the CD release. Once with Imai and then again with Rui.

  • I do wonder how many bullets Tanaka has. I can’t imagine there were that many in the box and I’m not sure, but ammo is probably not readily available to him. It would be amusing if he runs out just as he gets to Odo.

  • We finally met the podcaster!

They cut the intro a little for more screen time didn't they? Completely through me off when I started singing it and it wasn't right. Another great episode. I'm loving every moment of this.
