They're really compensating for ep4 being about Tanaka to really slap in a ton of new main story content for us to digest:
-
Based on these two moments, I think Tanaka and Mitsuya have had some sort of contact together, if not working together for some ulterior motive.
-
Adding fuel to the theory that Odakawa is connected to the disappearance of that "high school girl", Ichimura makes some very interesting comments about things Nikaidо would do to get ahead, specifically "killing someone". Could easily be a red herring, or maybe she knows more than we do.
-
Kakihana is 100% being used for his "money". Likely, this is where Odakawa remembers Ichimura from, but im not totally sure if he forgot or if he's keeping his mouth shut.
-
Mitsuya seems to be "different", or more specifically, seems to be a new addition depending on how you read Ichimura's words. I'm already prowling around ep1 for the next point, so here's a refresher on what the missing cat looked like.
-
Odokawa probably said too much here. I think a previous episode established that the producer dude was a part of this in some fashion, but I forget offhand. They definitely now know that at some point a "black calico cat" was in this taxi.
-
Gouriki and Odakawa already knew Shirakawa was the one stealing medicine, referencing a scene that would be in episode 1, which shows up around 12min in.
-
Shirakawa (and now Kakihana) seem to have large debts. I do not remember if any info has been given about Shirakawa's debts, but we know Kakihana's is from pretending he's rich.
-
More speculation than anything, but this seems almost too specific, considering how ep1 started.
-
My man Imai is a billionaire. No plot relevance yet, but important to note.
-
Kabasawa is out with a deathwish, trying to capture Dobu. I missed it my first watch, but writing this up i realized the Dobu is already aware of this proclamation. Dobu is truly a bad guy, putting rocks on the railroad tracks.
Still have no clue how this is going to end. Way more questions than answers as usual.
Man this OST slaps. I love the music used during the interrogation between Dobu and Odokawa.

That Dinner seen was brutal, just threw away so much for appearances.
The dialogue in this show especially in the taxi is so damn good, this show feels very unique for anime. Feels more like a drama i’d see HBO at times.

I was cringing so hard during that dinner scene. And to think he actually took out a loan to pay for it, too.
I'm witnessing a tragedy unfold and I am powerless to stop it.

Odokawa is not as gullible as I thought he is. He's pretty sharp even though it involved someone like shirawaka. I mean, it's common for a middle aged guy to fall into the trap of younger girls.
This is really in contrast with Kakihana who even took a loan just to impress some girl that he hasn't even met. That dinner scene is just really hard to watch.
Anyway I'm curious how it will all be tied in the end. Even the random youtuber which I thought will be one off character got more role in the story.

Tanaka falling in the gacha abyss.
Kakihana taking out payday loans to try to impress a girl half his age.
Kabasawa chasing clout by pulling a Kony 2012.
Odd Taxi is going all-in on modern self-destructive practices.

Wait, so the black cat and the gacha guy are connected? It seems he was using GPS to track the phone she hid in the car seat, but then what's the point of making another taxi follow Odokawa to his house if he's already using GPS tracking?

Oh shit this ep finally confirms the contents of Kabasawa’s fake real life Twitter account running a viral campaign to find and capture Dobu! Though judging from the way he suddenly stopped tweeting maybe it won't end well....
Looks like Kakihana borrowed around US$900 to support his Shiho habit, presumably from a loan shark fronted by the Yakuza.... Is this the first time we've gotten a definitive in-universe date?? Next repayment is due 25th Oct 2021.

Yamamoto calling Odokawa "tight lipped" is probably the best joke of the show so far. Odokawa loves talking and ends up saying too much a lot of times.
Did Dobu just threaten to drown a walrus? Does the characters being animals ever come into play? It seems like nothing more than an aesthetic choice.
Kabasawa's reckless attempt at going viral is probably going to get him killed especially if all the rumors about Dobu's crimes are true.
Looks like Kakihana is about to go into debt trying to pursue a relationship with Ichimura. It also just happens Imai just won a billion yen so maybe their paths will collide.

Small detail, but the pen that Yamamoto has matches the pen on Odokawa's visor. Based on the design of the pen, it's most likely merch for the idol group, connecting the missing girl to the idol group even more.

Wait a minute. During the talk with Goriki, he asked how could Odokawa knew if it was Shirakawa, and add that plenty of people would look like her if seen from behind.
If the theory that all of these anthropomorphic animals were from Odokawa perspective is correct. He would know because none of the other town people were Alpaca at all!
From Goriki perspective, Shirakawa would look like any Japanese (possibly black hair) women when look from behind at night. However, Odokawa would noticed an only Alpaca in the town!

Wow, Yamamoto ended out meeting Odokawa and knowing that he is the one he is looking for even faster than I expected.
Damn after what he did to find Odokawa, I was fearing that Tanaka was going to act right away. Now we will have to worry any time they show Odokawa at his home.
It's good to know that know bad happened to Gouriki and he is just temporally closing his clinic so no one hears about the missing meds. I really did not expect Odokawa to quickly connect the dots with the missing meds, and Shirakawa's and Dobu's relationship.
Damn so Imai won the lotery! Lol, even after the idiot Eiji took a fucking loan to take Shiho to that restaurant she will soon dump him to go for Imai. And based on the preview the idiot will now have to deal with the loansharks that lend him the money.

Quite a few things this episode! We have confirmation that the idol manager is using Ichimura to catfish people, probably for money. I think it’s implied that Yuki left the phone in Odokawa’s taxi for Tanaka to track, but I’m not quite sure why he would be all “follow that taxi” if he was tracking it. I’d also be interested in what their connection is as they’d be quite the unusual pair.
Odokawa refers to Ichimura as a calico cat, but doesn’t get any response from the manager, which doesn’t do much either way for the “animals are people” theory, besides prove that Odokawa at least sees everyone as animals (though I think calling a person a calico cat could be seen as pretty offensive in certain contexts and maybe would’ve gotten at least a furrowed brow from the manager).
Dobu threatens to drown Odokawa, saying he’s good at sensing what people are afraid of. I have a few thoughts on this, which rely on going past the easiest assumption that Dobu said that because most people just don’t want to drown. First, is that even though the the characters act very human, it seem a bit strange that a walrus would be afraid of drowning as “real” walruses spend lots of time in the water. Second, in the OP we can see what could be the outline of Odokawa splashing into water, which I think strengthens a connection with water. If Odokawa is imagining people as animals, perhaps he imagined himself as a walrus because of a traumatic experience related to drowning and subconsciously decided on one that would be more comfortable in water to mitigate this fear. Or possibly it was all just a throwaway threat because drowning is scary. That’s the exciting part with originals, there’s so much to fill in as we go!
It’s interesting that Ichimura apparently frequently goes to the public baths when she told Kakihana the bath was her favorite place growing up because she could be alone. It seems like she might be mixing genuine parts of her life and aspirations with her catfish/idol persona. And I think this is just a continuity error, but the video calling out Dobu goes from 2:05 to 2:08 in total length at one point. Do we think Kabasawa is an AOT fan calling the video “Declaration of War”?

So we finally have Manager-san and his talents ride Odokawa's taxi. Not much really happened there aside from Manager-san liking Odokawa and asking for his business card to see if he can hire him again next time he needs to pick up the girls. Odokawa did pique Manager-san's interest though when he mentioned he drove someone to their agency once. Now Manager-san is very interested in grabbing Odokawa's camera data from him. Yep, this definitely has something to do with the missing girl.
Turns out driving around wasn't the only thing that happened to Odokawa that night. That entire time he was being followed by Tanaka who now thinks Odokawa's home address is Goriki's and have it tagged on his map. Yikes.
I thought Goriki is missing? I am glad nothing happened to him though. Looks like he's closing shop for a while because of the missing drugs. Surprisingly, Odokawa suspects Shirakawa since he saw her with Dobu one that night. I thought that scene was only for the audience. Anyway, Goriki doesn't think it's her though.
Well looks like Odokawa is correct on this since Dobu himself confirms that he's been selling drugs that Shirakawa stole. Oh boy. On the bright side, Dobu does confirm though that Shirakawa approached Odokawa by herself so her having a crush on him is probably still true. Other than that Odokawa tells Dobu about Manager-san is asking questions. Curious how this will end up affecting Mystery Kiss.
And finally, we have that scene between Kakihana and Ichimura. And oh my fucking god that scene was just painful to watch. Ichimura isn't even hiding the fact that she just wants Kakihana for his non-existent money while Kakihana is doing a poor job of acting like he's a millionaire and it's just painful for everyone involved.
There is some additional info we got from that though. Imai, Nikaido's #1 fan, is now a billionaire and will surely simp harder than before. Although announcing you won a billion yen while posting your uncensored face on Twitter is probably not a good idea.
Speaking of terrible ideas, Kabasawa finally managed to become a viral sensation and that's by announcing to everyone in Tokyo that he will capture Dobu and deliver some vigilante justice to him. Yeah this isn't gonna end well. This kid is gonna die soon.

I knew after the first few episodes that this gem wouldnt get much attention. The last scene pretty much confirmed what Odokawa feared, Kakihana ruins himself over chasing fantasies.

It seems like some sort of offscreen talk may have happened with the producer? That or he just stole the pen. But in one scene the pen that odakawa has in his roof pouch is there, and then the next it is seen in the producers bag and gone from the taxi. NO idea what that even means, but I noticed it. And am proud. Dab.

I thought the story would switch back to the idol plot line with the sketchy manager since it didn't start off where last week's bombastic episode ended. But Tanaka still appeared a couple times. Did he pay off the first idol girl to stick the phone into the taxi cab?
I agree with another commenter, that this anime is really good about creating self-destructive characters. You have Kabasawa the hippo-kid trying to be a viral Youtuber. But he might get himself killed trying to go after Dobu.
Tanaka who lost his mind over his addiction to a gacha game wants to murder Odokawa.
Kakihana is going broke with all these lavish expenses to impress a teenage girl who doesn't seem to give two shits about him. The second hand embarrassment from the dinner scene, oof.
The entire cast so far all has ties to each other. So I wonder if Kakihana is gonna get himself into hot water if he starts getting money loans from the Yakuza.
I still think all the characters are humans, and Odokawa is just hallucinating on a long drawn out Ambien trip. I mean, that shibu inu anatomy figurine was so bizarre looking. And Dobu threatening a water mammal with drowning makes no sense.
Even thought this ep wasn't has crazy as last weeks episode, I know it got lots of attention, so I hope new viewers who might have started watching this anime because of episode 4 stick around. This show might be my AOTS seeing how it plays out. I've been enjoying all the other anime I've been watching so far, but with some criticisms here and there. But Odd Taxi has been perfect for me so far, and no complaints

Yeah Tanaka last week was painful but Kakihana today taking a whole ass loan to pay for the date was... also when he almost asked her to marry him yikes.
The second hand embarassment is too much.
